Don't mind these nitwits. I laugh when they ignorantly say Nigeria is very rich....Yes there is corruption, and it needs to be curbed. But it is delusional grandeur to think that the West doesn't budget a lot for electricity generation. Why do you think the prices of electricity is high overseas. I spend over $150 on electricity when I am in South Africa, when I am in the U.S, I spend close to $500. Are Nigerians ready to pay that much if electricity is available 24/7?

New York's budget for 2024 is around $224 billion, while Lagos state budget for 2024 is around $1.5 billion. But somehow, we expect states like Lagos state to look like New York or California in just 4 years.......

Nigerians really need exposure to understand that it is actually a broke nation that needs to diversify.

The truth is Federal Government need to invest and subsidize power more in Nigeria to spur development because our purchasing power is just too low, later on they can request for people to pay more for power when the economy situation of the country improve but Nigeria government is not ready to make that much sacrifice because they won't see enough money to siphon and loot.

True talk, brother!
All Past Leaders( Labour leaders,in Executive( the Presidency,Legislatures( Sen+ House of Reps, the States Houses of Assembly), Traditional Rulers, the Religious leaders) in Nigeria - should see this, and answered Our Youths:and the Masses -on why we are still in the same Spot of after Independence in 1963- till date!
It's all part of Corruption,we have been talking about!
How can these decades went by,and you placed Nigeria in Collective Darkness, while other Countries were moving and those Countries - dislodged all enemies of progress, yet no improvement in Nigeria Light/ Power because of - Corruption,Greed , Ethnicity and Tribalism,as some Cronies and Wicked People prefers to hold Nigeria to ransome, including the Youth, hence the Japa Syndrome.
See where the Chinese - a Country that does not talerate Corruption- a Country we had Independence almost the same Year.
We are just not serious,as a Country!

Typical Nigerian talking ignorantly with so much confidence.

You are delusional if you think they are not budgetting billions for power, you think they generate power out of thin air?

Power isn't cheap in any developed countries, how much is Nigeria even spending on power especially with how worthless naira is ? you guys just exaggerate.

USA spend at least the GDP of Nigeria on power every year.

Although there's problem of corruption, the truth is Federal government need to budget more money to truly fix power in Nigeria, every developed and serious country know how important power is and invest heavily in the sector but Nigerians still have very high expectation with just investing so little and making a little effort.

You want to use 2 billion dollars to generate sufficient power for 200 million people ? keep dreaming, you guys are not serious yet and still under estimate what it will take to generate sufficient power for 200 million population.

You're just as ignorant as Lalami3232 that you're criticizing. Most of the spending in the power sector is largely private and not government. You have forgotten that PHCN was sold off in 2014 under Jonathan. Davido's dad for instance owns a generating plant that provides about 500MW of power. He is even building a much larger plant in Ondo state

https://techeconomy.ng/davidos-father-faces-delays-in-2b-power-plant-project/

The primary problem with power in Nigeria is that the tariffs consumers pay does are not cost reflective. It does not cover the cost of generating and distributing it. The federal government fixes the tariff or subsidizes that makes it unprofitable for the Discos and Gencos to provide power. Government promises to cover the gap in the price but has largely failed to. The government owes the Discos N1.3tr while it owes the Gencos $1.3 bn. It is because of these debts that gas suppliers are reluctant to provide gas to the Gencos.

The solution is to deregulate the price and allow them to charge cost reflective prices. This will spur huge investment into the power generation and distribution industries. Price deregulation of GSM tariffs was what spurred the huge investment in the mobile phone industry. The country has gone from having 400,000 lines in 2001 to over 100m lines today. Mtel, which chose to provide calls at N22 per minute went totally out of business fast while MTN and Econet (Now Airtel) are still with us today.

Deregulating the price should be the first step. The next is to set targets of at least 20hrs of power to all consumers within 2 years in exchange for price deregulation.

In addition, punishments must be meted out to those who steal power or commit any contravention. I am very certain if there's a no-nonsense zero tolerance policies to such transgressions, such will be reduced greatly. At least, people now dey fear to spray money anyhow.

A huge role out of meters to those without should be carried and achieved within 2 years. It is pertinent that people know they are actually being charged for what they consume and not planted with a "crazy bill."

Deregulation of the price and the entrance of new competitors will bring down rates in real terms eventually.

Electricity is an expensive investment, Nigeria as a country failed when they had the time and money to actually invest in the sector. By now, what we would have been doing would be the addition of little MW here and there cos of the population growth. The major investment we don't have, even the little MW we no see

Using 4,500MW, that would be an equivalent of 39,420 Gigawatt-hour of electricity per year. Still poor

I am surprised the US is not number 1...just turn lights on anyhow, leave the TV on, and plug things overnight...cant blame them, they are not paying for it. You shout shout shout...its $200 per month and winter almost double. My students play video game it seems 24hrs a day lol cos they come to class still sleepy. Solar is an option but one must sign 20yr contract...that scares me. In Nigeria, its solar all the way...till we get our shit together.
