There is something fundamentally wrong with Nigeria. I wish I could really pour out my heart right now, but doing that will mean I will run afoul of Nairaland's Rule 2, so I will stick to just narrating the shocking and utterly appalling incident that happened to me today with as little vitriol as I can manage.

A caveat: If your attention span is a tweet long, or you have challenges reading beyond TWO paragraphs of any article (Summary Crew), kindly close this thread now.

Shockwaves-

I went to finish up a job in Tin Can, Apapa. Everything went on fine until it was time to pay up. I had spent way above my budget so I attempted to make payment with my bank app, but the network was on the bad side of shitty, so I decided to use one of the ATMs after Coconut bridge. I went with the head of the team I worked with, a man from one of the South-Western states and who I have known for a long time. Since it wasn't far, we decided to walk instead of taking a bike and stayed on the left side of the bridge, close to the ubiquitous container loaded trucks parked by the side.

The man walked in the front while was about a two steps behind him. We were close to the end of the bridge when I heard a loud screeching sound behind me, and before I could react, a bike slammed into me and sent me flying into the air.

I landed on my side in an awkward heap beside the back tyre of one of the parked trucks. Stunned, I tried to get up but couldn't, so my companion had to lift me up and dust my clothes because I was in shock. The God who keepeth me, who neither sleeps nor slumbers ensured I didn't have a single scratch on my body, but the...the...'human' who left the road to come and meet me lay in an unconscious heap, his leg tangled with his bike. It seem he had scratched his face on the hot asphalt very badly.

My companion led me to the side of the bridge where I sat down to recover. I sat down for about 3 minutes when I started hearing whispers. "dat na the passenger he carry." I quickly insisted that I wasn't the passenger, but when one of the truckers advised me to move away from the spot where I sat because "dem fit gather you dey talk nonsense", I knew something was off.

Insanity-

I and my companion, lets call him TJ, slowly descended the bridge and had gotten to the bike park when a passenger just arriving told me to go back to 'my boy'. Puzzled, I asked who 'my boy' was.

Insanity-
(contd)

The passenger, whose accent proclaimed him of eastern extraction answered "the boy lying unconscious there". I was baffled. Why do I have to go back for any bloody reason when he is the one that hit me? I was already getting mega pissed by now and I told the idiot man as much and walked away with TJ. I had barely gone a few steps when I was surrounded by what seemed like hundreds of illiterate northern bikers commonly known as...you are. right. Very correct.

I was wondering what was happening when someone rode up with the idiot biker who struck me. Apparently he had regained consciousness his right cheekbone was scraped raw and swollen three time it's normal size.

They were all chanting "treat him" and were becoming agitated. TJ tried to explain that this hopeless guy had struck me from behind, but the more he explained, the more agitated they became. One of them who could speak English said I fvcked up. Ha, fvcked up how? He answered that after I caused the accident the least I could do was to stay behind to see if he recovered. Ha, aye mi o! How did I cause the accident? He answered that I caused it when I was "trying to cross the road".

Jesus Christ... undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided embarassed

Ha, cross the road to where?? To go and dance Alingo on top of the double parked trailers on their way to drop empty containers at the terminal? undecided I was heading to the ATM with this guy (I was pointing at TJ) when your brother came with his unfortunate self to jam me. undecided undecided

Then it dawned on me. None of the members of this motley mob of stark illiterate bikers were present at the collision, but they were already cooking up strange and satanic stories in allegiance with their comrade. Demonic accusations were flying around, the strangest of them being that I 'pushed' the idiot biker and he fell. undecided

One of my staff members who happened to the passing by came down from the vehicle he was escorting and jumped into the middle of the crowd. He told them to stop pushing me. Instantly a set of hooligans pounced on him and gave him hot chase down the extremely slopy side of Coconut bridge. These people seemed volatile and were ready to unleash violence. The boy ran to the shop of one of the eastern traders to report the incident. The trader, an elderly gentleman came, and after hearing my own side of this ridiculous matter whispered to me that there is trouble in Nigeria, and that haven't i noticed how 'they' have practically overrun all sectors of the economy, and in Lagos state as a whole? Didn't i know they have an agenda?

He advised that for my own safety and for peace to reign, I should just take the rider to the clinic. Another eastern gentleman who had left his shop to come and investigate this furor centered around an angry, wild haired, bespectacled and furiously gesticulating lady concurred.

EXIT-Common Sense

One of the bikers attempted to shove me with his filthy paws but I snarled at him to back the fvck off. By this time it seemed all the northern bikers in Apapa had congregated around me. Asides the grace of God, i am figuring that part of what helped me may have been my complete fearlessness in the midst of this...this...crowd of... Let me not break Rule 2.

One of them who looked neater and more well spoken than the rest said that he too has once been forced to treat a passenger, so I should suck it up and treat the idiot guy. What's done is done. I am paraphrasing. So the long and short is whether I am the victim or not, I must treat the person who almost broke my bones.

Another one said that if I truly fell, where is the injury? So in other words a visible sign of injury is an indication of truth. Never mind that my hip was aching me where the bike hit me.

Another fellow who looked like a soldier (prolly one of those junior, jobless and semi-literate officers who go around yards looking for containers and Tokunbo vehicles to escort) but still of northern extraction commented that I was stubborn because I refused to be cowed and i was arguing with the ones who can speak bastardised English among them.

Last last, when I realised that more and more bike men were arriving and the accusations were taking a dangerous turn, I accepted to follow them to a hospital, with the intention making calls and having these bagas arrested once we arrived.

Would you believe that these guys drove me all the way to a small clinic in Kirikiri, despite the fact that one of the traders showed them a hospital that was very close by.

When we got there, I marched up to the doctor and told him that I was kidnapped by those rabid hooligans behind me (they packed themselves like confused herbivores into the reception area and chattered noisily in their native tongue at the top of their voices).

The doctor ran to Kirikiri prison and brought a security personnel who interrogated I and two of the... the... 'humans'. I explained my own side, vibrating with rage, and when it got to their turn, they said "the madam" pushed their brother and he fell down in front of trailer.

I was flabbergasted.

The security personnel asked the two men if they had been present when I supposedly pushed their comrade, but they kept on blabbing offpoint in English that sounded like esoteric tongues. He commented "Do you realize it's not possible for her (me) to push the guy when he is far from her and moving on high speed? So how was she able to push him?"

They had no answer but insisted I was somehow responsible for the accident. undecided

The doctor examined the one who caused the whole hullbaloo to start with, and discovered that the guy was high on only God knows what substance the fool inhaled before jumping on a bike and carrying his unfortunate self to meet me.

Doc: Who pushed you?

idiot Biker: Soldier.

Doc: Where did he push you?

Idiot Biker: On expressway

Doc: Did this madam push you?

Idiot Biker: Yes

The fool was so high, the doctor gave up on questioning him.

A Note of Caution-

I was advised by the doctor that for peace to reign, I should just treat him and take it as a sacrifice for the 'Mber' month. He charged me 10k, but I was to give the bike people 2k out of the money.

I went to the ATM, withdrew the amount and gave everything to the Doctor. God forbid i dignify those people by addressing them directly.

I collected the receipt and walked out of the clinic. On my way out, i favoured them with the most disdainful look I could muster, hissed at them and walked away.

My heart is full of anger, but I know, Dear Reader, that you know exactly what will come out of my fingers if I really give vent to what is in my mind about these northern bikers that flood Lagos on a weekly basis in cover body trucks, armed with nothing but the clothes on their backs and Yamaha bikes. They have this herd mentality that begs the question-"even if you no go school, shey you no get common sense?" It is still this same mentality that causes religious lynching in the northern part of the country. A rumour goes round and without any kind of investigation, they pounce on the hapless victim.

Let me stop here before I run afoul of Rule 2, but l will drop a word of caution to my fellow Nairalanders of northern extraction- MAKE A CHANGE IN YOUR INDIGENOUS STATES. What I witnessed today made me understand for the first time why a lot of northerners are very vulnerable to extremist ideologies and conditioning. Many of these people have been so completely starved of even the most basic enlightenment that it seems like they are now incapable of rational thought, and as a result act like the Missing Link.

Perhaps basic education will curtail the menace and complete nuisance so many of them constitute when they migrate to other states.

The doctor's receipt. Each time I look at it, my blood boils, my hackles rise and I just feel like going around with law enforcement agents arresting every northern biker I see and hauling them back to the arid desert lands from whence they migrated from .

This receipt represents common sense and logic turned on it's head.

I will try not to allow my experience taint my relationship with the northern neighbours who I have know for several years because those ones are though not educated as well, but have stayed in Lagos for so long that their world view has changed and have become more tolerant, but I guess it will always be at the back of my mind that when push comes to shove, will they be objective, or will they attack first and reason later?

I fear.

What happened to you was very sad. Sometimes I try to advocate for this 'one Nigeria' stuff, but the more I see incidents like this, the less convinced I am.

It was few months ago I witnessed how these boys burnt down someone's SUV because of one of their erring brothers who while moving with reckless speed, slammed into it from behind and died in the process, injuring the passenger.

The driver of the SUV could have been lynched if he hadn't escaped from the scene as soon as it occurred. A brother to the injured passenger who came to check on him at the hospital was beaten to pulp and almost set ablaze if not for timely intervention.

What more can we say of this lot? Extremely crude and dangerous. Presently, I don't see a solution to their menace if not disintegration of the country. I just hope by some miracle, there could be a turnaround to this trend.

I'm sorry you were simply a victim of two things.
1. You are not a northerner
2. You are also not a Muslim

Honestly, I used to be a pro- Nigeria unity, but as the day goes by, every single justification I have tried to give that ideology proves to be a miscue. I finally realized that the merger of people of different ethnic values and norms to birth this entity called 9ja deserves to be tagged one of the biggest scam in human history.

Even though I'm not from the South, the entitlement and born to rule mentality the north has clothed them self with is like a ticking time bomb that will sure send this country to nonexistent either sooner or later and this has made me become indifferent about the secession agenda some regions are set to achieve (call me a pessimist, but that is the truth we must all accept).

To sum it up, Nigeria is not one and may never be especially if its unity remains fragile as to being begged for by certain regions because no beggar can beg to perpetuity. Somehow, someday, when the chickens come home to roost, we will all realize how disunited we are in this country. Remember, nothing kills faster than pretentious love and unity, they have been used as weapons in wars and have sent so many to their graves.

In conclusion, I would implore those who see the north as allies to beware of the dragon which blandishes with the head and smites with the tail.
This is my dispassionate creed.

BTW, sorry for the unfortunate incident. Let posterity judge every man according to his deeds.

Yes. He was following the SUV too closely from behind and on speed, so when the driver applied brakes, he just rammed into it.

For the brother, they assumed he was the driver of the vehicle when he came looking for who was involved in the accident. Very similar to what happened with Ishi.

These Northern bikers are constituting nuisance in Lagos. Some of the time you see their bodies on the expressway and even ending the valuable lives of their passengers after taking tramadol.

Many innocent people have been killed or injured because they disagreed with these idiots. And for their agenda the Igbo man talked about, what is it all about?

Seriously, I can't identify myself as a Nigerian if these people claim to be one.

Their agenda is to occupy land and claim as climate change dries up their arid north further and as southerners flee abroad seeking greener pastures.
They may not even be Nigerian citizens, based on what Buhari and El-Rufai said.

Herdsmen from Libya responsible for attacks – Buhari

- President Muhammadu Buhari says the fall the Ghadaffi regime made some trained militia men to disperse to countries in the region
- Says it is the custom for herdsmen to roam about in search for grazing areas for their cattle
- Blames the seizure of land meant for cattle routes and grazing areas marked for herdsmen by some persons for the escalation of the crisis between farmers and herdsmen

President Muhammadu Buhari has said herdsmen responsible for the attacks across Nigeria migrated from Libya.

Buhari who made this disclosure on Saturday, May 14 in London on the CNN said following the fall of the Ghadaffi regime, some people from the Sahel who were trained by the regime dispatched to other countries in the region and began causing trouble.

How we paid violent herdsmen to stop Southern Kaduna killings – El-Rufai

“Fulani herdsmen from across Africa bring their cattle down towards Middle Belt and Southern Nigeria. The moment the rains starts around March, April, they start moving them up to go back to their various communities and countries.

“Unfortunately, it was when they were moving up with their cattle across Southern Kaduna that the elections of 2011 took place and the crisis trapped some of them.

“Some of them were from Niger, Cameroon, Chad, Mali and Senegal. Fulanis are in 14 African countries and they traverse this country with the cattle.

“So many of these people were killed, cattle lost and they organised themselves and came back to revenge.

“So a lot of what was happening in Southern Kaduna was actually from outside Nigeria. We got a hint that the late Governor Patrick Yakowa got this information and he sent someone to go round some of these Fulani communities, but of course after he died, the whole thing stopped. That is what we inherited. But the Agwai committee established that.

“We took certain steps. We got a group of people that were going round trying to trace some of these people in Cameroon, Niger republic and so on to tell them that there is a new governor who is Fulani like them and has no problem paying compensations for lives lost and he is begging them to stop killing.

“In most of the communities, once that appeal was made to them, they said they have forgiven. There are one or two that asked for monetary compensation. They said they have forgiven the death of human beings, but want compensation for cattle. We said no problem, and we paid some. As recently as two weeks ago, the team went to Niger republic to attend one Fulani gathering that they hold every year with a message from me.”

I'm really sorry for your experience. It's a very sad one. Imagine paying 10k to someone that abused you? Chai, this country is a messed up place. This is why some Igbos clamor for Biafra.

Jesus... Something must be done about this kind of impunity.

sorry again

to be honest it is not a tribal thing in that sense
i live in festac and they pull the same nonsense there on the regular when one of their fellow eejits gets into an accident.
anywhere there is an accident, okadamen will gather and intimidate the owner of the vehicle, no matter the circumstances

aboki will erm always be aboki, though it is also a nigerian thing. i am sure you saw me dragging with supposedly educated uber drivers who formed brotherhood and proclaimed they were right no matter what

it is time for the govt to ban okadas. their wahala pass their usefulness. we sha have opay now
Smh. I don't understand this country where the victims are victimised

First and Foremost, this isnt about Islam(someone said because she isn't a Muslim, so that brought Islam in)

We are have yourubas and other tribes who are Muslims and they don't behave uncouth like this.

I read all and I am boiling down in my spirit.

Check the roads now, majority of them are bikers and they drive carelessly with no regards for lives. These are what you can't do in their regions.
The kind of mentality they have is so appalling.
They can do and undo without anybody holding them. That was how they killed one guy in my area then with their small dagger.

Illiteracy is one of the factors disturbing them.

I saw a Maruwa tumbled because of one them some weeks back and yet he was insisting he wasn't at fault which was so glaring he was trying to double cross.

We are in perilous time in this country. We just need to be extra careful, notwithstanding the educated ones among them are better.

God bless Nigeria and the good people of Nigeria

Ishilove. Doh
Next time, don't argue, don't explain, just tell them you are taking the 'victim' to the hospital. Take him to a government hospital and abandon him.

I was in a similar incident 2 weeks ago. I was on the right lane, about to enter my street on the right hand side. I trafigated and horned at the same time , sufficiently. One useless abokii still felt it was wise to overtake me from the right hand side. I swear i didn't see him. Next thing I heard was gbooooo. He hit my right passenger door and went down, my back tyre climbed his motorcycle. He wasn't badly hurt, just a few scratches.

Next thing you know, I was surrounded by a crowd of abokkiiis, all insisting I take him to a hospital and pay for his bike. I obliged, put him in the back sit, and drove towards a hospital while the others followed behind. Instead of a hospital I drove to the police station. They all came in with me. I made a police report, and insisted that I won't pay a dime for the accident. I offered him 1k to treat his wounds. The police men were insisting I take responsibility, I told them to charge me to court if they think I owe anybody. Las las we dey station for almost 2 hours, they told us to return the next day.

I went, aboki did not come again.

I hope i understood you well...Somebody hit you and lay unconscious on the ground and you left him there? You didn't even go to check on him to confirm if he is dead or dying? Did he hit you on purpose? No, it was an accident. A good Christian would have at least checked on him.
