An elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has called for a return to the parliamentary system of government in Nigeria to end the allegation of marginalisation by some parts of the country.

He also made a case for zoning of political power, saying zoning and power rotation will take care of the aspiration of different groups in the country.

According to him, once power goes round at least once or twice everyone will be reassured that they will get the opportunity to produce the president.

Yakassai, who was a guest on the Morning Show, a programme on ARISE News Channel, the broadcast arm of THISDAY Newspapers, yesterday said his endorsement of zoning was not his best choice, but that he had to realise that the stability of the country should be paramount

I am still feeling that if the military had allowed us to continue from the Second Republic without any interference, probably the Nigerian people on their own would have jettisoned rotation and zoning and realised that everyone should be considered on his own merit, but unfortunately the military scuttled the journey. So, we are going back to square one anytime the military intervenes,” he explained.

He said he was originally in support of the presidential system of government with the belief that if the whole country is the president’s constituency, the president will devote his attention to every part of the country.

According to him, this will end the allegation of marginalisation by different sections of the country.

“Unfortunately, this is not our experience in Nigeria. So if I have my way, I will recommend that we go back to the parliamentary system of government,” he said.

The former liaison officer to late President Shehu Shagari noted that the problem with the presidential system, which Nigeria copied from America is that power is concentrated in the hands of the chief executives, president and governor.

Yakassai said: “All the complaints that we are hearing about corruption is associated with that. It is so because under the presidential system, you cannot remove the president except by a resolution of the two chambers of the National Assembly, supported by two-thirds of the total membership.

“It is known that it is not a difficult thing for a president or governor to corner one-third of the membership of the legislature and make them to vote against anyone who is thinking of going back to any system other than the one that vested power in them. This is a big predicament in Nigeria.”

However, he said in the parliamentary system, only a simple majority is needed in the parliament to pass a vote of no confidence in the government.

“So, when the government is not performing, all the members need to do is to move a vote of no confidence and when the vote is checked and a single majority is in favour of the motion, the government will leave and a new one will be set up and the fear of that alone will make whoever is in power to ensure that he does not do anything that will warrant a vote of no confidence in his administration.”

Who the hell is Yakassai?
The north that has enjoyed political power for the greater part since independence, how are they faring?
The truth is that the current political class and those immediately after them have been fully indoctrinated in corruption and no matter how you zone or rotate power, nothing can change our national experience with them around power.

Maybe we should voluntarily invite the Chinese to re-colonize us angry angry Or the other alternative should be to revert to the confederation status like it was around independence

What's tha business?

I have always posited that parliamentary system of government is best for a country like Nigeria that would only take a miracle to ensure true federalism. Where we would have a ceremonial head and a Prime minister in charge of government, in this case our executive becomes part of the legislature ensuring effective legislation. The excesses of executive can be curbed using a vote of no confidence by the parliament and not forgetting the back benchers are always there to criticize and take over if possible. The list is endless. It’s more transparent

What wrong with Nigeria is more spiritual than physical. Only if people knew the kind of diabolical things these politicians do to influence the mind of people during election periods.

If not, what plausible reason will someone that was in this country from 2015 - 2019 vote in the present government again for 1k and empty promises that they know at the polling unit?

Parliamentary or whatever, this country will remain the same until people wake up to the truth.

Majority of minds have really been enslaved in this country.

And we all can see what this so-called Unity has produced over the last 60 years.

I do not want this type of unity or any unity whatsoever, let us each split and go our separate ways.

This type of unity that has made a mockery of the black man, the colonists could not even have done to us what our leaders have done to us since independence.

This type of unity has been been consistently defined by abysmal failure and wanton corruption on all levels across everywhere.

This unity only brought about by easy access to oil blocks and the corruption that comes with it.

This unity that is dependent on empowering 1 main ethnic group whilst seeking out subservient slaves leaders from within the others so as to continue to suppress the others.

This unity that cannot and will not give my grandchildren or great grandchildren a home to call their own, even if you manage to escape this country you are a slave anywhere else you go because it is not your own and no matter how much you try to assimilate you may never.

No I do not want this type of unity, it has never worked, it will never work.

We should go our separate ways, that is the only solution in my view. It will be tough initially, especially for opportunists who have nothing to offer and have decided to make a career out of politics. But overall, if we persevere, each within our own enclave will be great.

Nigeria needs a lot of restructuring. Top government positions should be made less juicy by all means. And minimum qualifications raised, not SSCE to be a president, while SSCE can only get a low level job in civil service.
Things need to change for Nigeria to move forward.

Makes sense, it gives everyone a chance to air their grievances without waiting for the next election so their region can be favoured.

Ideally , if we didn't have a figurehead president that people in the background are riding on his inefficiencies to carry out corrupt, nepostitic and tribalistic actions, this system is better than the regional system.

Nigeria is a complex quagmire.

Anybody against rotation of presidency for "competence" should tell us if we are currently experiencing competence.

You could not be more correct. The generation ahead of me did absolute nothing to give me a country I can call home. I am bent on not allowing such scenario to befall the generation behind me. The shithole called Nigeria is a dead-end and must be scrapped.

The fastest way to destroy the country completely is to return to parliamentary system of government. Parliamentary system of government has never been fruitful in any clime where almost every member of the legislature, or almost every intending member, is susceptible to venality and nepotism. So, the country is better off with puppet legislatures than having puppet executives - presidential system of government currently in practice is our best bet, at least until we solve our core fundamental problem.

true justice, fairness and accountability is all this nation needs, you can talk about regionalism if any state in Nigeria or region is fully developed, the solution to Nigeria's problem does not lie with any region or religion it is our collective failure to stand up against corruption.
