The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), said that it has no plans to join the nationwide protest scheduled for Aug. 1 against economic hardship in the country.

Mr Festus Osifo, TUC President said this at a news conference on State of the Nation on Thursday in Abuja.

Osifo said that the TUC would not be mobilising its members to join in the protest.

According to him, when you are having a protest you need to sit down, have the conversation, have meetings, you plan but as of today, nobody has reached out to us that they want to protest.

“Nobody has asked for our collaboration so how do you expect us to participate in a protest when we do not know who is organising it or even the institution,”he said.

He, however, called on the Inspector-General of Police (I-G) to ensure that the protest was not hijacked by hoodlums waiting to take advantage of the situation.

Osifo said that the Nigerian Police was bound by the Police Act as well as the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to provide adequate security for protesters to ensure a peaceful protest.

“We do not know who is protesting but all we know is that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is very clear on the issue of protest.

“The Police Act also mandated the police that when there is a protest they should ensure there is law and order, they should ensure that those protesting are also protected.

“That is why we are reminding them that the provision in the Police Act and in the Constitution should be respected.

“If they had contacted us maybe we would have called our organs meeting for us to review but as of today, there is nothing to discuss and review,”he said.

The TUC president also blamed the economic hardship on the Federal Government’s decision to float the Naira.

Osifo said added that a situation where almost everything imported into the country is paid for in foreign currency, leaves the Naira at the mercy of the dollar.

He urged the government to find a way of addressing challenges associated with food production, especially in Benue and Plateau which are major staple food zones of the country.

The president also urged the government to implement zero import duty on manufacturing equipment, insisting that they have the potential to create job.

On the face-off between Dangote and stakeholders in the petroleum industry, he urged President Bola Tinubu to wade into the crisis to avoid losing the confidence of investors in the country.

He also called for an abrupt end to statements arising from the various parties, as there was a need to find a solution to the problem.

“We feel and strongly believe that Dangote is one huge investor that had invested in Nigeria.

“Where there are challenges what they should do is for everybody to sit down together to find a solution.

“Let all unguarded statements be stopped forthwith. The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should bring all of them together and give them marching orders,” he said.

“Nobody has asked for our collaboration so how do you expect us to participate in a protest when we do not know who is organising it or even the institution,”

Hunger does not need permission for collaboration.

August 1 no too far again.

Bring down price of fuel and foodstuffs, and this protest dies a natural death.

What stops the government from providing Dangote with subsidised crude and then agree the final price at which fuel is sold?

What is stopping the government owned refineries from working despite spending over $40 billion in maintenance from 1999-2024? The amount spent that can give us two brand new Dangote refineries!

Whose interest is the government really protecting?

Of course, we don't expect this useless congress to be part of the protest. This is not a planned strike action, where as usual, the government invites and 'settles' decision makers of the congress behind the scenes. Next thing you will hear the strike is called off.
TUC and NLC are birds of the same feather, and part of the reason we are where we find ourselves today.

Nobody needs you to join the protest. Stay in your lane.

You are not Nigerians representative. The head of the protest is Hunger and Inflation.

Only jobless people will protest. In all my life I have never joined any protest in Nigeria. The reason is because we are not a nation. We are not one people. The igbo man has no business being in same country with the yoruba man. Likewise, the yoruba man has no business being in the same country with the hausa man. The worse of it all is the igbo sharing same country with a fulani man.

I mean we are people of different ideologies.

Look at Europe, every tiny ethnic group have their country.

No protest can genuinely work I'm Nigeria.

BTW, the yeye northerners did protest during buhari tenure, it is tinubu tenure they want to protest.

Even the yeye endsars where many died for nothing they didn't protest. Instead they were looting people's business.

If this rubbish protest ever holds, many businesses will cry because all these hungry thieves will use that as an opportunity to steal people's hard earned money, of which the Igbo man will suffer the biggest casualty.

I urge every igbo man to arm themselves with cutlass and guns if possible.

To all the yeye obedients urging igbo people to join the protest, respect yourself and have Sense for once.

Any igbo man that joins this the northerners to protest is the BIGGEST F**L ON EARTH.

The northerners obviously want to destroy tinubus government. They hate to be out of power.

Again, I repeat, any stu**pid Igbo man leaving in the east or anywhere that joins this protest is an id**ot.

The fact is that no amount of protest will change the current reality Nigeria is facing. What we are facing now is the after effect of too many corruption, nepotism and every other rubbish.

From August, just like during endsars, I will Watch and read from my phone as zombi**es get killed.

The cash out you guys made in the name of negotiating the minimum wage for workers is still heavy in your pocket. These are black legs that must be avoided in any serious national discourse.

What people don't realise is that the Northern youths don't need all these treacherous and back stabbing Union leaders......
These protests emanated from the North, if it spreads there in the North and the government dares make a mistake of turning it violent....Tinubu is gone. He may not be removed eventually but second term is gone!!

After reading all the comments here so far, I can conclude that the protest will not give desirable results. Look at the division amongst the youth. Yoruba versus igbo and South East versus South South. This protest is dead on arrival. The number one ingredient for a successful protest is unity and we lack this. I even heard that Igbos are not protesting, so tell me, is this really a protest?

In addition, it's totally fine they get the power back in 2027. We would just vote Atiku. Make the cycle continue. Who power help.

Irrespective of who the organisers of the #endbadgovernance# protests is, the attention the protest has attracted is very significant and commendable.

The message to PBAT, his cabinet & handlers is CLEAR - Your handling of the Nigerian economy is very poor and is unacceptable.

A large percentage of low income earners have never experienced the magnitude of depression and hunger on this scale under any Nigerian regime.

Nigerian Employers Consultative Assoc.(NECA) has estimated that over 30,000 workers were laid-off as a result of both Naira devaluation and Multinationals exit.

Unfortunately for PBAT, He took over when Nigerians exhausted patience through Buhari's gross ineptitude and economic mismanagement.

Address the nation PBAT and save your regime for the next 3 years !!!!!

An overwhelming majority of Nigerians are not impressed with PBATs performance.

You are very right. Everybody in Kenya, the politicians, the elders, the middle class, small and medium business concerns, the youths are all regretting the unfortunate protest considering the level of death, injuries and destruction of personal, business and government assets. The aftermath of the protest is that nothing absolutely to show for these losses. Infact, the Kenya's protest is just a political activity hidden in a protest form and the result is that everyone is a loser.
The Nigeria situation might follow the same partner, politicians and their international collaborators sponsoring protest for their personal gains while the public is deceived into believing that the protest is to solve their problem.
