Agibecky:

Do you know that thousands of secondary school leavers who cannot gain admission into higher institutions need jobs and many of them are paid as little as N5,000 monthly salaries in Lagos and other places. My friend pays his receptionist N8, 000 monthly and thank God her residence is not far from the office.

Majority of the civil servants in Nigeria are going to depend on the minimum wage and those with families will have no choice but to use their children and other dependants to hawk goods on the street.
Monday night on the way home from work at about 10.33 pm, I saw children still hawking at the Maryland bus near Ikeja and I told an elderly woman hawking with them to go home and sleep. She looked at me and continued with her work.

Today I went to the Tejuoso market in Yaba and I saw hundreds of boys and girls selling petty goods and the Igbo boys engaged in their rag trade of second hand clothes and other goods. I was heartbroken, because many of them have better dreams than petty trading.
I saw depression written on the faces of hundreds of traders and shoppers. I saw pretty girls and handsome boys struggling for survival and JAMB reported today that there is no space for 340, 000 successful UTME candidates and lest we forget hundreds of thousands of graduates and millions of secondary school leavers are jobless.

I returned to the office feeling depressed, because of the bleak future of the poor masses and their children.

If we sack the ruling megalomaniac party and set up a government without a National Assembly, we are going to save trillions of naira to invest in human capital development and develop a 21st century economy to provide better living wages for majority of Nigerians.
It is possible.

good talk

@femmmy why dont u depend on minimum wages rather than hussle in cotonu?

17K Naira to someone in a month after doing all you have listed is ought to be termed slavery.even giving that to a gate-man, security and all those uh ave mentioned is nonsense.
how could a man secure the gate of the govt when he is hungry, how cld a gardener cut the grass well, when the school fees of his kids are yet to be paid, tell a cleaner to clean when how he or she will eat dinner is still a misery.
tell ur them to go and update and upgrade them self if the what to earn above 17k period abi u go school?

People will always complain about how little the minimum wage is. Instead of running their mouths they should get their acts together and improve themselves then they can make some more money. C'mon hustle folks! The moment you accept the fact that government isn't Santa Claus the better for you.

You are telling somebody who's job can't even pay is transport fare and feed him to improve. How, by stealing/embezzling?

hhmm . . . We know what minimum wage is but how exactly does this particular wage go to supplying for the NEEDs it is meant for? How? I know it is too easy to take SIDES on a subject without even trying to put oneself in the shoes of those affected. But could you pretend to know what people are complaining about for one second and please help them understand why, according to you, they should not complain anymore . . .

Before you turn this into an US vs THEM debate, i tell you this . . .  I am not going to get into that with anyone here. Just deal with that which was asked please.

No, you are not answering the question. You suggested they stopped complaining because this minimum wage out to provide for all their needs, yes or no?
The question is not on how much it can rise or how much the government can afford. We are going off of the meaning you volunteered on the concept of minimum wage here. When it was lower, they complained it was not enough. Granted, it is higher now, but according to many, it is still not enough so the reason why they continue to complain. You however, suggest they STOP complaining because, according to your def. minimum wage ought to be used just for NEEDs and not for Luxuries and I am guessing you believe this minimum wage ought to provide for all their needs. Hence the reason why I ask that you help us understand exactly how that will work.

First I Dont Believe this (nigeria's) minimum wage is ought to provide all your needs. . .But What Im saying is that this is what your going to get so try and make with it. many Nigerian companies cannot afford higher minimum wages. . .complaining wont help any body.

First the U.S. is a develope country. . .Nigeria is not. . .we are not the same. . .The U.S. can afford a $7.50/hour wage. . .If nigeria offers that wage companies wont make a profit. . . Thats why I said stop comparing Nigeria to the U.S. and start comparing it to countries in similar situations such as china.

How do you know complaining will not help anybody? You admit that this is probably not going to help much but in the same breath you urge them to stop complaining? Come on now!! Have you ever had to live on Naira 20,000 or less   a month in Nigeria? When I say live, I mean( Pay Rent, Feed self, afford transport, fuel, etc)? Do you understand the frustrations here?

But again, why is China supposedly in similar situation that Nigeria is in. Apart from the fact that both are developing/underdeveloped. What else do the two countries have in common? Is cost of living in China same as that in Nigeria? Is the average Chinese more likely to face the same problems the average Nigerian does on a daily basis? What is the real basis of this comparison? Is it that you think the average Nigerian who is having to deal with life on minimum wage is concerned with what minimum wage is in other developing countries?

We are not speaking of lazy bums but of some of most hardworking people in the nation as a whole. SOme of them work over 50 hour weeks and still struggle to make ends meet. They sit back wondering how come their bosses can afford to live lavishly while they can barely put food in their mouths. They read stories of reps being paid so many millions of naira, the worst in the world, and wonder why they cannot get a few naira more than what they currently get. And you are here to tell them they should no longer complain?

I dont why People are criticising this as to it is too small
Firstly the former minimum wage is N5,500 and for it to be N17,000 is good news
now people get this it is minimum wage not your monthly wage
And though currently it is not enough it would go a long way to some people
and no countries minimum wage is ever enough
Take this for example in US you have five kids and your minimum wage is $400 and after four years you get 3 children again which means more food, school fees,a bigger house, more clothes, and a new car mini bus like toyota sienna,to accomodate the children while a person on the same minimum wage of $400 with one or no children would be better off , so really size matters , what am saying is that to SOME people it would be okay for them and SOME would still be inadequate but would help in a way,
And the N52,000 minimum wage they demanded is unrealistic as we have millions of workers and multiply it with N52,000 and see ,
Now if they government does what is right by building trains and better transport also by building good and cheap affordable schools and helping farmers which would in turn make food prices cheap * and also transport when government builds rail all over instead of spending about N100 or N200 normally you would spend just N20 and like i said help farmers food would be cheaper and also bring back industrIES Plural some would come and bring competition which would bring down the price of just about anything from cloth, furniture, school books and so on,
that N17,000 would be enough for MANY people IF NOT all

But this N17,000 is enough for SOME people and people it is not more N17,000 it would be N18,000 when Justice Belgore Alfa recommendation is accepted and Legislated

You didn't even mention the increase in prices as a fallout of this announcement which may only be implemented at least three months from the announcement. plus the states will pay lower than this amount being argued about

That is not true. Petitions are the "NEW AGE" way of complaining. People who do not have access to internet and petition services can complain their way to change. It is the same thing only one seems more SOPHISTICATED than the other but the results are usually linked.

Is the average Chinese more likely to face the same problems the average Nigerian does on a daily basis?

What is the real basis of this comparison?

Is it that you think the average Nigerian who is having to deal with life on minimum wage is concerned with what minimum wage is in other developing countries?

so why arguing about it if you know it's ethically wrong

lol I'm not arguing about it. . .my point is that yes it ethically wrong. . .but at the same time its technically right considering nigeria's circumstances. . .I really don't know why Kobo keeps replying to everything i say. . .making it seem like an argument. . .I'm on the same side as her saying that its to low.

I am trying to understand the reasoning behind your argument is why. Yes, minimum wage is to help provide for the basics but even this increase does not considering the true reality of life in Nigeria and I wondered why you would expect people not to continue complaining until they get better deals/benefits.

You might have figured that Nigeria cannot afford to pay them more but I don't think the average worker out there who works labouring under the sun to feed his family and self wants to concern himself with that. He sees how the leaders share money the way they want . . he sees how billions supposed to be spent to improve living for him are wisked away to foreign accounts and pockets of the rich and fat and he wonders why it seems the harder he works, the more expensive life gets for him. He has a right to be frustrated and complain the way he knows how to.

Petitions are the "NEW AGE" way of complaining. People who do not have access to internet and petition services can complain their way to change.. . .

LOL NEW AGE . . . People with out computers lol. . .People have been petitioning for thousands of years. . .Face it complaining(talk) is different from petitioning(action). . .

Yes they have the same problems as we. . .Not all of china is developed you know. . .maybe I should Have used India.

What is the real basis of this comparison?

To show an example of another country in a similar position. . .showing that the amount is technical right when compared to similar countries.

Is it that you think the average Nigerian who is having to deal with life on minimum wage is concerned with what minimum wage is in other developing countries?

I was just backing up my claim of "technically right" by giving examples and comparisons of other countries
