I'm trying to quit not just social media but nairaland. I was able to stay away from Instagram for like 2months until today. But nairaland has been an addiction I also want to stop.

Just like our parents were glued to radio, newspapers and TV so are we on social media

Smile4mee01:
If you are a youth, you are probabaly on one or two social media platforms.i.e Instagram , Facebook, Tik tok, twitter etc I rarely watch TV these days.

I recently saw the hours I spent on each social media app last week and was concerned. Just like dopamine, it's becoming irresistible to surf the internet doing nothing.

It does appear to me SM especially IG, tik tok is saturated with scantily Dressed women seeking attention, some just dancing away. Low budget bloggers pasting thier opinion on every matter, some giving advice to people not seeking it. Not so funny skits, after which you watch it you regret wasting your data. The desire to trend at all cost. As in it's kinda endless

If you spend 24hrs/day with free wifi it's not enough to view the content being pushed out daily. Are we losing focus on what's important and helping these influencers and skit makers to relevance.

I even heard of a student who quit university to join Onlyfans.

Before you come at me, I know there has been some good from social media but the opportunity cost with respect to time on those app is alarming.

Please for those who have quit social media, Has your life been better for it?

I felt the utter dissatisfaction it has to offer.

In the start it was fun. The fun was to share with others. Like small stuffs - great quotes, one liners and may be something you creatively accomplished.

But, this sharing, the likes, the compulsion to check it again and again if somebody commented. It didn’t had much to offer except the strengthening of the virtual avatar you have created online. The time I significantly spent for the utter nothingness compelled me to disable my Facebook account. It made me realize, that each one of us has so many friends, groups and etc., that each person is bombarded with lots of information, useless information. I spent one year, without any social media. Then, my closest friends made me realize, that talking on phone or meeting is not possible every time. They wanted to remain connected, but they are so busy in their office lives and all. So, they requested me to activate it. I did activate it.

But the first thing, I did was to make the reality to be reflected onto my account. I unsubscribed from the groups who were either obsolete or didn’t bring me happiness. Disliked the pages which were no use to current ‘me’. There were around 300+ friends. I deleted them all. And then the only ones, who are my closest remained. They are the ones Who, I really want to know about, where they are, what they are doing, how are they? I only kept them. The closest, which came to less than 20. There are only few which are too close and always remain connected, and other some good friends, which I meet occasionally. I don’t care about the rest of the people, I don’t add a cute face, simply because I don’t know her. I have joined groups which are motivational. I like the quotes from great masters, scientists and philosophers of all time. Now, the Facebook is fun again, I share something I get occasional two or three likes which are from my closest friends. I am happy again. I don’t care about other people self obsessed selfies, the places they visited to just put it on Facebook. I love the occasional photos from my dearest friends who are not self obsessed of their selfies. I love it. Even they are, I love them anyway.

“Travel and tell no one, live a true love story and tell no one, live happily and tell no one, people ruin beautiful things.” - Kahlil Gibran

Now, the crux of the story is, make the virtual more aligned with reality. And, its a tool, it can either make you happy or sad. Remodel it for your own benefit. For your own happiness. That’s what I did.

And then I have also replaced social media, with family time. Which is more often helps me sharing what I have to offer. It makes me happy.

People looked at me surprised when I quit Facebook more than 18 months ago.

“Dude, why are you becoming so anti-social? How will we be in touch?”

“Call or text?” I smiled

I followed that up with entirely quitting Whatsapp some months ago, and now I don’t spend time on Whatsapp unless necessary. I have never been on Instagram or Snapchat. That leaves me with just Quora and LinkedIn, which are useful from a personal and professional growth perspective.

The greatest thing that this has allowed is mental clarity. The lack of dependence on scrolling through mind-numbing posts (“news feed”) has resulted in consumption of mostly useful information. As my job is largely driven by thinking, clarity and knowledge - this has led to an increase in productivity.

It’s great to have the shackles freed from this new form of addiction.

Additionally, I have also found myself to “ironically” be more social with family and friends. I text/call/meet people one to one, and those discussions are enriching.

After all, as humans, there’s nothing that beats a truly social interaction

Not totally though.

I've stopped being an active Facebook user for about 5 to 6 years now.

I don't have Instagram account.🚫
I don't have TikTok account.🚫

I'm only active on Twitter✅ because it's helping my frontend development journey.

I also use WhatsApp✅.

Last, but the best, I like visiting Nairaland✅ to read news and trending developments around the world.

The bane of this generation. You're lucky that you have come to this realization.
Acknowledging and Identification of a problem is the primary step to the solution.

While I won't advise you to quit it finally, I will suggest you take a long break.
It has become an addiction and you have to fight it just like you would fight any other addiction.

If not because my job necessitates the use of SM, I had planned to also take another long break.
But I have developed some measure of control over it.

Take a long break as long especially if your means of livelihood will not be drastically impaired.
Long break could be 3 months to 1 year depending on when you realize you're not as interested in it any more.
By the time you return you will likely have a more productive use of it.
Cos like most things, it really is a Gift or a Curse, depending on your mastery and control over it.

More important than taking the break is what fills your time during the break.
You have to replace the time with a productive endeavor.

That is up to you, but I will suggest you build yourself spiritually through knowing Christ personally. Other things begin to add up. God bless you.

It's becoming clear I'm not a social media person because I find it difficult to post pictures and sh:t. It's been months since I used Facebook and Twitter but I just got off Instagram just to go check out about this sad demise of Late Mohbad.

I could relate to what happened to him because I've been there and I think the matter is still like lingering.

Even I did the same a few weeks ago, maybe a month ago. I finally had to let go because I realised something. It was killing my individuality, me being different from others, me being unique. I was tired of entertaining people by being someone else who I'm not and never can be. I was tired of posing to get more likes on my pictures just like everyone else does. I was tired of taking a picture first and then eating the food that had been served in front of me. I was tired of seeing nature through the eyes of the camera's lens. I was tired of begging to people to give me attention. I was tired of flexing every new thing I just bought. I was tired of looking good by editing my pictures and applying filters. I was tired of hiding behind a screen just to talk to my classmates. I was tired of portraying myself as the happiest or the coolest or the saddest or the most suicidal guy next door. I just wanted to be me. To do things that make me stand out.

Ask yourself, how many likes did you get when you posted your first profile photo posing like a weirdo, and how many likes did you get after applying some filters and posing like everyone else? See the difference, you, me, all of us are acting, adjusting, trying to fit in this social society where people will only like to see and hear you if you are upto their standards which they call being “cool”. Seriously I really feel bad for people who crave attention, who think their online so called friends actually care for them, who get “depressed” or “sad” if they don't have enough likes or followers, who are extroverts on social media and introverts in real life, who do not understand the idiom “Everything that glitters is not gold”, who think thaT writing speeches about women being unsafe sitting behind a screen will solve the problem, who can go to the heights of posting half naked pictures, alcohol/hookah/weed/cigarette pictures, and musical.ly videos. WHEN WILL THEY UNDERSTAND THAT NONE OF THESE PEOPLE CARE IF YOU ARE ALIVE OR DEAD, NO ONE GIVES A DAMN ABOUT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PERSONA.

And finally, I had to quit by deleting my profiles from Facebook and Instagram. And I will come back soon to these platforms, but this time with a blue tick beside my name.

Congrats on your new real life where you can be YOU
