Here Are Some Places That Also Bears The Name "Èkó" In Nigeria by Raydos: 2:30pm On Dec 09, 2023 |
I know there has been a lot of controversies about "Èkó" being A Benin name, But this is very far from the truth! Eko is a Yoruba name Eko is a Contraction of the Yoruba word 'Ereko" meaning a Farming village or Dependency (Eri Oko) Eko Akete — Lagos Island LG, Lagos State Eko Ende — Ifelodun LG, Osun State Ekosin — Odo Otin LG, Osun State Eko Ajala — Ifelodun LG, Osun State Ekotedo — Ido LG, Oyo State Eko Kan — Shaki West LG, Oyo State Oko Eko — Ijebu East LG, Ogun State All these Ekos scattered across Yorubaland were established independently without knowledge about any of the others but all happen to have the same 'Eko' Element because of their common denominator which is the Yorùbá language and culture which they all belong to 17 Likes 4 Shares

Were all these places named by the Binis too? Just because we have same Word in two different languages does not mean they're the same For example: 'Akin' Is a Yoruba word for a Strong man And Also Akin is also an English word which means something of similar nature Same with Ode which means a hunter in Yoruba And "Ode" which means a lyric poem in the form of an address to a particular subject in English Does that mean Yoruba language belongs to the English people just cos they have a word in common? Even Àkùkọ in Yoruba is Hẹn And Okuko in Igbo is Hẹn Because these words sounds the same, Does that make Yoruba own the word Okuko? 6 Likes |

But nobody is trying to impose another Government on the affected locality. The irony is that the world is a global village and some people out of tribalism who are unknowingly multitribal by birth are erasing their ancestry. I hope they realize that on time. |

Raydos: Yoruba and Igbo Languages are related Akuko means cock not hen in Yoruba In Igbo it means same thing Òkúta means stone in Yoruba Okwute in Igbo Enu means mouth Yoruba Onu In igbó Omi, water in Yoruba Mmiri, In Igbó Aka means hand or arm in local Yoruba dialect (Akure, Ekiti) Aká means hand in Igbo Ewurẹ is goat in Yoruba Ewu is goat in Igbo All those similarities u mentioned in other languages are just coincidences, but when they mean or refer to the same thing it's not a coincidence I am a Linguist 4 Likes 1 Share |

You are right but Ekoosin is pronounced differently. However, Eko Ajala is officially known as a community with Baale under Eko-Ende. |

Raydos: True. The word Eko has a different and unrelated meaning in the Bini language dictionary. It's mostly used for tummy/belly or stomach. 16 Likes 1 Share

Raydos: Under the suzerainty of Ife Empire, Benin Kingdom was used to civilize Edo people. Since its independence from Ife, Benin has not been able to forge new developments on its own. This has resulted in stagnation and isolation of the Kingdom. The impact is a retrograde in political and social gains in the Edo society. They continue to focus and hope on a renaissance for the powerless Oba. They dream hopelessly of a return to old glorious days when Yoruba rescued them and re-ordered their destiny. It is impossible to revert, that tie is severed for ever, but the obstinate Edo slave is not going to simply give up just like that. If Oba of Benin told them his mecca is Ife, the home of his ancestors, they will cease slaving for him. An Oba must always be sorrounded by slaves to perpetuate power. So do not beat them too much, Edos are only living their destinies as slaves to children of Oranmiyan. 9 Likes 2 Shares |
