The banks should start paying them per hour even if it's just 700 naira per hour. Only then will this nonsense of over working workers will stop given the fact that the workers will surely be paid for over time.

cokeraguda: THE INHUMANE TREATMENT OF ECOBANK NIG STAFF BY ITS MANAGEMENT

It has come to our notice that the management team of Eco Bank Nig Plc for upward of 2 years have decided to treat its staff like slaves. They make the staffs work till very late from Monday to Friday, and compel them to be at work on most saturdays and sundays. Please in God's name who is the Group head Operations of the Bank, who ever you are, this is not being productive or getting the best from your staffs. you compel staffs to be at there desks on saturday and sunday under the disguise of

Customer Account Update
KYC
ATM Update
Customer migration
Banking software migration

it must be noted that Eco Bank Nig is not the only bank that either acquired of merged with another bank, how come years after staffs of the bank are still compelled to go to work on saturday and sunday.
All i would like to know is if Eco Bank Nig were to be paying its staff on hourly basis, would this be happening? embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed
It is not only in Ecobank. At least this happens in GTB and Access.

So so sad an issue! Some of us really shud think of small businesses. We all can't wear ties and pose in the suave offered by the bank jobs. Especially wen u're a contract staff. It's tough in this country but one had to make a move. Cos really the situations won't change so u need to change your situation.

@OP Do you work at Eco-Bank?

what if he does?

If not, why do you want to "take panadol for another man's headache" as someone would say?

You should be your brother's keeper. Not being our brother's keeper makes us vulnerable at all times. This vulnerability is one of d main means d government, d politicians and company owners continue to use to hold the people down.

And What's the point of this thread? So the Nigerian Citizens stage a protest against the said bank?

If need be.

These people know what they signed up for and if they can't handle it, they are always other options.

slave mentality.

...Rather than concern yourself with what your government should do for it's citizens, you're bothering yourself with the working hours of a firm.

what the OP is doing is exactly what the government should be doing 4 its citizens. If the government will not fight for its citizens, the citizens will/should fight for themselves.

We should stop being selfish.

I get amused by the outburst of some of my mates on nairalander.the marriage of the banks have brought about so many headaches to the management of the bank.several things were actually wrong with the old staff of oceanic bank and this is what is being presently addressed in form of training and re-training to bring them to the same page instead of sacking them i was reliably informed and this is actually paying off as evidenced in the branches nation wide. All the management of the bank required is a good customer service practises from all the staff and this envidenced in their atm machines in the recent time.
@ops,you and your complainants can just resign if you are not comfortable with the mission and vision of the bank for a first class pan african bank and first three banks in nigeria where your job will be secured.

What are the facts of this post? Workers in Nigeria are routinely abused; their contracts ignored, work life balance thrown out of the window, harrased and intimidated with queries, sack and disciplinary action. Is this an exclusive preserve of the financial services? NO.
A deeper and more worrying problem in demanding staff to be at work at the weekends might indicate inefficient business processes, insufficient staff strength, cash flow problems

I laugh at those who ask others to find a new job or the sort, the poster is highlighting some of the real issues plaquing Nigeria as a country, lack of worker rights, no consumer protection and a long list of anomalies. smh

Op ur talking about working weekends at eco bank? Dont try zenith bank in that department. U dont just work weekends, or even work very late, THEY PAY PEANUTS! after declaring profit of 100billion. Worst of all, they use bsc holders, (I mean engineers, accountants, mgt grads) as contract staff. All these are the results of the high unemployment rate in Nigeria. They feel grads dont have a choice but to take whatever jobs that come their way. Smh...

234GT: I think the poster started this thread to ridicle bankers and make them look like slaves. He or she did not start the thread because of any genuine concerns for bankers.
Bankers are hated worldwide because of their so called fat salaries, but hey, the salary you call fat becomes nothing to you after you have earned it for six months.
I go to work on weekends atimes and I enjoy it. I am a banker and I love my job. My friend resigned and took up a job that paid far less than what he was earning because he said he was overworked. He did not complain to anyone!

I thought this has earlier been corrected, Bros it is not STAFFS but STAFF be it singular or plural.

Stop chatting nonsense....
If anyone is not happy, they have options, it is not by force
Do you know what is in the contract anyone affected signed in the first place?
If they signed to work at anytime they are needed, then you guys don't have a case...

Hope you are not a beneficiary of the product of there inhumane working condition.
There are labour laws both nationally and internationally meant to reconcile the interests of the employer and the employee so as to guarantee a harmonious working environment. Should either of the parties breach any of the labour laws it is then appropriate for the other party to cry out.
If the reverse were the case, would you support the employees?
It is obvious the workers are being made to pay for the colossal corruption that occured before oceanic acquisition.

I commend the initiator of this thread for his observation. Honestly as a staff of the bank, what we are faced with in terms of managerial decisions being melted down to branch core and contract staff as customer facing agents does not commensurate with the salary. I bet the management of these banks ignore the risk staff are exposed to when people of the underworld know they will surely meet them there. Let us not forget it was worse than this and CBN had to intervene. There used to be Saturday banking. Now the major reasons for weekend banking as a partaker of the stress are as follows
1. Low over head of staff. Inadequate staff. A lot of customers' requests which can not be totally treated during the week due to over load on just one staff is been carried over to weekends.
2. Technology Issues: a bank which used to service a small population of customers with a software platform has now acquired another bank which used to service a larger population of customers with a more robust software and wants to keep the old software for whatever reasons. What do you expect?? Conflict of mission, vision and purpose at the peril of staff and customers
3. Government Policies and Target: the FG wants a cashless society but are the banks and customers ready even if the staff are ready?? How many nigerians have access to the internet for internet banking? What is the population of people who are aware of e products and channels? Hence the old customer wants to still deal in cash therefore tellers who are supposed to handle less cash, balance quickly and go home, are still battling with 70 percent of customers who are still resisting change.
4.Associated Stress. Imagine a bank staff who lives at Sango and works at Apapa!!! Imagine a bank staff constantly being sexually harrassed by different customers with a few millions!!!! Imagine a mother of 3 children as a bank staff and a threatning husband. Saying I will kill you if you don't resign!!! Imagine a bank boss working in terrorist and kidnapping prone areas! A staff is still in the papers wanted. He was last seen taken away by kidnappers. Imagine the kind of productivity these people will bring to the table!!
5. ATM. If no one goes to work during weekends, who will service the ATM with cash. This is not an excuse because it can be outsourced and let the staff who has been working from monday to friday at least rest
6.UNGODLINESS: imagine receiving a mail on Friday evening from management saying you must come to the office on Sunday by 10AM or the following Saturday when it is supposed to be a relation's wedding and you've bougth everything or Sanitation before 7AM or Easter. A respecter of God will not do such.

You can tell by my essay am a qualified and proud banker. I will not wish this slavery on anyone. Instead I will advocate you build your own business so your children won't have to choose the life we chose.

Your nephew is in heaven, come to my bank, marketers here get as high as 2billion and risk getting sacked every year if performance is not up to 80% grin

Funny enough , sometimes the sacks are justifiable and reasonable no matter how bad it may look . In the end , the remaining people who were not affected by the sack would agree with management. Banking industry is a commedy.

I don't work with ecobank but I know somewhere in their policy it states that noone should be in the banking premises after 7pm. Its so in my bank but yet you still see people working till 8pm and sometimes 9pm. Its inefficieny IMO and trust me if management gets to notice, a lot of Memo's would fly around for a lot of persons.
