AdeCisco: I commend the initiator of this thread for his observation. Honestly as a staff of the bank, what we are faced with in terms of managerial decisions being melted down to branch core and contract staff as customer facing agents does not commensurate with the salary. I bet the management of these banks ignore the risk staff are exposed to when people of the underworld know they will surely meet them there. Let us not forget it was worse than this and CBN had to intervene. There used to be Saturday banking. Now the major reasons for weekend banking as a partaker of the stress are as follows
1. Low over head of staff. Inadequate staff. A lot of customers' requests which can not be totally treated during the week due to over load on just one staff is been carried over to weekends.
2. Technology Issues: a bank which used to service a small population of customers with a software platform has now acquired another bank which used to service a larger population of customers with a more robust software and wants to keep the old software for whatever reasons. What do you expect?? Conflict of mission, vision and purpose at the peril of staff and customers
3. Government Policies and Target: the FG wants a cashless society but are the banks and customers ready even if the staff are ready?? How many nigerians have access to the internet for internet banking? What is the population of people who are aware of e products and channels? Hence the old customer wants to still deal in cash therefore tellers who are supposed to handle less cash, balance quickly and go home, are still battling with 70 percent of customers who are still resisting change.
4.Associated Stress. Imagine a bank staff who lives at Sango and works at Apapa!!! Imagine a bank staff constantly being sexually harrassed by different customers with a few millions!!!! Imagine a mother of 3 children as a bank staff and a threatning husband. Saying I will kill you if you don't resign!!! Imagine a bank boss working in terrorist and kidnapping prone areas! A staff is still in the papers wanted. He was last seen taken away by kidnappers. Imagine the kind of productivity these people will bring to the table!!
5. ATM. If no one goes to work during weekends, who will service the ATM with cash. This is not an excuse because it can be outsourced and let the staff who has been working from monday to friday at least rest
6.UNGODLINESS: imagine receiving a mail on Friday evening from management saying you must come to the office on Sunday by 10AM or the following Saturday when it is supposed to be a relation's wedding and you've bougth everything or Sanitation before 7AM or Easter. A respecter of God will not do such.

You can tell by my essay am a qualified and proud banker. I will not wish this slavery on anyone. Instead I will advocate you build your own business so your children won't have to choose the life we chose.
frankly, you talked objectively and the points you marshaled out are so on point.
all i can say is i would rather sell recharge card than work in a bank.
TIME is the currency o.No job security, yet so much stress. Worst of all, if u are lucky to have lasted long in the industry, it wouldn't be a mystery that one's productive years would have been wasted.
once a again, Bankers sorry ooo, bur una be glorified slaves.

On the "staff and staffs" error noted, thanks for the correction. you need to understand what it means to work from Monday to Sunday, or have a loved one go to work for that period every week, then i guess u will have a diff view of the whole issue.

YOU ARE VERY CORRECT. I HAVE A FRIEND IN ECOBANK. SHE WORKS LATE INTO THE NIGHT MONDAY TO FRIDAY AND MADE TO WORK SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS. NO TIME FOR HER CHILDREN OR HUSBAND, NO TIME FOR ANY OTHER THING NOT EVEN CHURCH. THIS IS SLAVERY. NORMA SALARY O NOTHING EXTRA. IT WASNT LIKE THIS BEFORE WHEN MY FRIEND WORKED WITH OCEANIC BANK. CAN GOVERNMENT NOW FORGIVE CECILIA IBRU AND BRING HER BACK? THANK YOU.
cokeraguda: THE INHUMANE TREATMENT OF ECOBANK NIG STAFF BY ITS MANAGEMENT

It has come to our notice that the management team of Eco Bank Nig Plc for upward of 2 years have decided to treat its staff like slaves. They make the staffs work till very late from Monday to Friday, and compel them to be at work on most saturdays and sundays. Please in God's name who is the Group head Operations of the Bank, who ever you are, this is not being productive or getting the best from your staffs. you compel staffs to be at there desks on saturday and sunday under the disguise of

Customer Account Update
KYC
ATM Update
Customer migration
Banking software migration

it must be noted that Eco Bank Nig is not the only bank that either acquired of merged with another bank, how come years after staffs of the bank are still compelled to go to work on saturday and sunday.
All i would like to know is if Eco Bank Nig were to be paying its staff on hourly basis, would this be happening? embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed

As a matter of fact my hubby works there. Oh my God! I have been fasting and sending out prayer points to friends to pray that he gets another job soon.
He goes to work on sundays, At times he is called up from church to go load ATM! He was a worker in my church but becos of this so called ECOBANK PAGANS MANAGEMENT, he hardly ever attends church services,
Forget saturdays o, He is always having one training or the other. No time for the kids as before. When he was in Oceanic it wasn't like this o. God please we need Mama Ibru back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am amazed at the people complaining here. It is on record that the trio of Jim, Tony and Uncle T(RIP) worked odd hours too at their prime.

Why are people complaining? Didn't they know what they were signing up for when they accepted the offer to "work in a Nigerian bank"

Bank work is not for the fainted hearted and its relatively easier now with the advent of technology.

I wonder what people will do if they were employed during the ledger and trial balance/brick and mortar banking days of First bank, Union bank and the likes.

By the time the cashless initiative takes full swing and people are made redundant because technology can now perform what they do and even better, I will see what will happen.

I think we should all be grateful that we even have a place to wake up and go to every morning.

Just my two cents!
