I agree with you to an extent....especially in Border patrol...we have porous borders and the Tucano can help in giving a layer of security... Adminisher: |

tdayof: The A-29 is a great LICW aircraft, it would serve the Air Force a great deal. In areas such as constant survelliance it is better than any fast jet. 10 hours in the air, with a recon pod is massive. Imagine those planes in the border area or out at sea in our EEZ. It won't replace a fast jet, it's not supposed to either, but it would serve us pretty well. Let's wait till the actual contract is awarded, we would have specifics then. |

I hope you all know the super tucano deal is still subject to ratification by the US Congress despite Donald Trump's assent for the sale. The mind boggling price may also include price of support, missiles, etc. However, if that's not the case, if enough furore is made and escalated here in Nigeria to the hierarchy, maybe they might reconsider the deal if found to be too dear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF_kQyy-bkQ 1 Like |

Adminisher: A turboprop aircraft would never replace a light/medium weight multirole jet or air superiority fighter, it can only complement and take on some of the work load for some specific type of missions like ISR and air interdiction, super Tucano cannot police our air space. I don't see the point of this stingy behavior, since we know these things can't replace eachother I say we get a balanced mixture of both. Light attack + medium mitirole + proper air defences Light attack + heavy air superiortity |

Hrmnn:Interestingly is that when an attack was imminent units on the ground would get "victory" messages. Some of the artillery guys' air defence was provided(SAMs) by UNITA. |

MikeCZA: Yes and FAPLA absolutely feared the Stingers. But they were unevenly distributed and UNITA was bloody awful shots. Fred Bridgland wrote that Recces had to be on hand to help them acquire their targets and operate the missiles, otherwise they missed more often than not. The artillery guys always had first priority for air defence since the MiGs made them their #1 target. I think starting in Op Protea each battery had an attached troop from 10 AA Regiment with Ystervarks. Other than that the only other piece of air defence equipment used in Angola was the Cactus, but it was not well suited to bundu bashing and simply could not keep up with vehicles like the Ratel or even the Buffel. Its use was very limited accordingly. Henry240: No I am not. I hope I didn't mistakenly convey that impression to you. |

Hrmnn: No, not at all. I only asked because, the content you are interested in mostly comes from the 70s and 80s era. Which is not a bad thing. If you ask me, we really need all the diversity we can get. Just plain curiosity. 1 Like |

That would all depend on how they were deployed by commanders. You also have to consider that in later ops like Moduler we had supporting unita units with stingers as well as more competent AAA. Not sure how Cactus would have done against it. It's a much easier target for a command guided round like Cactus. Who even knows if the few that were fired weren't simply damaged. Some of those french vehicles looked like they were literally dragged kicking and screaming through the bush by samils. Another thing to consider is that they would have had to at some point land in G-5 range to be re-supplied and the recces had the fapla rear echelon well covered. Impala drivers would also salivate at the sight of any MI series in the skies as it was probably the only thing (slightly) slower than them. MI24's might have had the edge in spotting units on the ground, because they're so slow. The migs either came in too fast and low or too high to see anything. Sometimes they would just bomb ashonas hoping to hit a water bowser. Hrmnn: 1 Like |

You're referring to "vicktor vicktor" being called over the radio. That meant "fighter fighter" or vegter vegter in Afrikaans thus VV or vicktor-vicktor in radio alphabet. This call would signal all units to start their air defence contact drills. Mainly "fisgraat" (fishbone) with the vehicles. Every driver would immediately turn left or right based on his vehicle nr. and gun the engine to get out of the migs strafing run. They could pick up on your tracks or dust through the bush and follow it right up your arse if you stayed in convoy. MikeCZA: |
