THOUGHTFUL THANKSGIVING

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:16-30

"In every thing give thanks: For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

A story was told of a man who was robbed of his belongings. While his wife was expecting him to be sad, he expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life. This man understood and obeyed the biblical counsel that enjoins believers to give thanks to God in everything. Perhaps, as a youth, you have never been robbed of something. Life challenges may have been robbing you academically, physically, emotionally, economically and spiritually. The ups and downs of life can make you question why you should give thanks to God.

Like the man in the story above, you should always find reasons to thank God in spite of your challenges. Do not allow anything to hinder you from giving thanks to God always. The Bible says: "…all things work together for good to them that love God…" (Romans 8:28). Who knows? Such challenges may be stepping stones to your breakthrough. Therefore, always give thanks to God in all situations.

Challenge: "Are you always grateful to God?"

Prayer:: "Lord, teach me to thank You in every situation."

Quotation: "Always give thanks to God in all situations."

POSE QUESTIONS!

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:16-30

"And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me?" (Acts 8:30-31)

The purpose of reading, even for students, is to increase knowledge and understanding. The Acts of the Apostles chapter 8 tells us about a man of high rank under Candace, Queen of Ethiopia, who went to Jerusalem to worship God. On his way back, he read the Book of Isaiah. God sent Philip to him, who asked him if he understood what he was reading. He replied “…How can I, except some man should guide me?” Philip preached to him, and that led to his salvation and baptism. As a devoted Christian, you should always be ready to share your knowledge of the Word of God with others and point them to the Saviour.

Do you ask questions when you do not understand what you are taught or what you read? It takes humility to ask questions and seek explanation from teachers and fellow students. From today, seek help when you do not understand anything.

Challenge: "Better understanding of an issue will help you in taking informed decision."

Prayer:: "Lord, please increase my understanding."

VISIONLESS VOW

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:16-30

"Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay" (Ecclesiastes 5:5)

A vow is a serious promise, which is expected to be fulfilled. Jephthah was both a Judge and mighty warrior in Israel. He led Israel in the war against the Ammonites. Before embarking on that battle, he made a vow to God to offer as a burnt offering, whatever he spotted first on his return home. God granted Jephthah victory over the Ammonites. On his return from the battle, Jephthah’s daughter, his only child, was the first to come out of his house to greet him. He fulfilled his pledge to God. This illustrates the seriousness of making a vow to God, and the need to avoid making light-hearted and irresponsible vow like Jephthah did.

Do not make a hasty vow that you cannot redeem. Rather, learn to give willingly to God according to your means and as led by Him. Jephthah made a rather thoughtless vow and paid dearly for it. It is better not to make a vow, than to vow and not perform it.

Challenge: "Avoid making a carefree and hasty vow."

Prayer:: "Help me Lord to give willingly unto you."

Further Reading: Judges 11:30-40

Quotation:: "Fulfil your pledge"

RESIST ANGER

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:16-30

"Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools" (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Two teenagers, John Hawthorne and Cameron Milner had been brought to the police station after admitting their involvement in the stabbing of a camper in the area of Hawthorne’s home. The unarmed victim, Joel Boner, bled to death from a fatal stab wound to the heart inflicted with Hawthorne’s knife. “What made you so angry?” asks Detective James Berish. “Just him jumping on me,” says Hawthorne. That`s all.

Somebody said you have to master anger or it will master you. The man Moses was once described by God as the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3, 7). In spite of this rare trait, he yielded to provocation from his people and lost the privilege of reaching the Promised Land. When a person becomes a Christian, his conduct and personality should undergo certain changes because he is now a new creature. In your daily interaction with your friends, classmates, room-mates, teachers, or fellow workers, resist the temptation to be vexed. Reading and meditating on the Word of God, will help you to overcome the spirit of anger.

Challenge: "Resist every temptation to be angry."

Prayer: "Dear Father, deliver me from the spirit of anger."

THE KING KNOCKS

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:16-30

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)

Sometimes a visitor comes knocking at your door. When you peep through the window, you can decide whether to ignore or welcome him into your home. Supposing your school Principal or nation`s President comes home visiting, will you turn him away or welcome him with open arms? The decision is yours to make. Any step taken will most likely determine your future happiness.

Fornication, pornographic images, stubbornness, occult practices and other evils will hinder King Jesus from entering your heart. Many people have remained slaves to sin and Satan simply because they have allowed the worldliness and fantasies of this life to hinder them from ‘opening’ the door of their hearts to Jesus? Would you open yours to Him today?

Challenge: "Will you open the door of your heart to Jesus today?"

Prayer:: "O Lord, give me the grace to recognise your voice."

Further Reading: Isaiah 1:9-20

NO PEACE PACT

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:16-30

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8.)

Over a century and half ago, a peace treaty was signed to end the four-year long American Civil War, thus ushering in an era of freedom, reconciliation and peace in the country. On the contrary when Christ defeated Satan by His death on the cross of Calvary, no peace accord was signed. The implication of this is that believers in Christ have no peace pact with Satan. Consequently, Satan remains the enemy of God’s people, and hence you as a believer must be on your guard against his evil schemes.

As a Christian, you have no peace accord with Satan. You are enjoined by the Scripture to be sober and vigilant. Focus on God and live for Him. Surely you will be victorious over Satan, and be preserved blameless for the coming of the Lord. If you are not a child of God, you can receive Christ now by confessing and forsaking your sins. He will receive you and help you to overcome Satan.

Challenge: "Be alert; make no room for Satan"

Prayer: "Lord, help me to live above the wiles of the devil."

Further Reading: "Luke 22:31-34, 54-62."

Quotation: "Receive Christ now!"

AMAZING YOU

"I am fearfully and wonderfully made...and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them" (Psalm 139:14, 16)

You probably don't grasp the true meaning of these words. Let me help you. Look at a mirror now and you are sure to see your face. Fourteen days hence, look again in the mirror and your face remains the same. Science tells us that our body cells are constantly dying and being replaced. Your skin cells get damaged and are replaced roughly every two weeks. In 300-500 days you have a new liver, in 120 days new red blood cells and in ten years you have a brand new skeleton! The questions now are: Where are the new cells generated from? How is it that your "new" face looks exactly the same as the "old"?

You are an amazing creature of God. Beyond your physical looks, you must realise that God has a divine purpose for creating you and He wants you to reflect His glory. But, are you? The starting point is repentance from all sins. After that, live a consistent life of righteousness.

Challenge: "Uniquely made for a unique purpose, don’t settle for less"

Prayer:: "Father, live your life in me."

APT APPOINTMENT

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28)

Truth be told, most people find disappointments very frustrating. How about a flat tyre, for example, when you are rushing up to the airport to catch a flight? Disappointments always seem to show up at the wrong time. But Domingo Pacheco’s life was saved by a flat tyre which caused him to miss ValuJet Flight 592 that crashed in the Everglades, a few miles from Miami, in May 1996. He missed death by a whisker! That “disappointment” was the best thing ever to happen to him all his life.

The last time your expectations were dashed, you whined, cried and murmured, perhaps even charged God foolishly. Didn’t you? But faith’s response to seeming disappointment is, God “performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.” (Job 23:14). The next time the unexpected happens, take the matter through your faith's filter and you might just find out that it is God’s appointment for you.

Challenge: "In the eyes of faith, every disappointment is His appointment"

Prayer:: "Father, teach me to trust you in every situation of life."

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

"And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger" (Luke 17:17, 18)

A noted motivational speaker once said: “Of all the ‘attitudes’ we can acquire, surely the attitude of gratitude is the most important and by far the most life-changing.” A very sad attitude had developed among young people during what has become known as the “Me generation”. It was then, in the heady 1970s that young people lost the ability to say, "Thank you." It doesn’t matter that dad and mum struggled to provide food, clothing or quality education; the children simply took everything for granted. After healing ten lepers Jesus wondered why only one of them returned to say, "Thank you". Are you unthankful?

You must learn to appreciate any good deed done for you. You must express gratitude to God in prayer and sincere adoration. Your parents and teachers equally deserve your gratitude. Better still; express your gratitude by helping them. Show your appreciation!

Challenge: "Grateful souls never lack committed friends"

Prayer:: "Thank you Lord for all that you have done for me."

YES, HE CARES

"And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship...and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?" (Mark 4:37, 38)

Have you ever experienced a painful disappointment? Your heart is numb and empty. You have just failed an important examination. So you are not gaining that admission to school after all! Or, you just lost a parent or a sibling. Then you wonder: "Does Jesus care enough to be near?”

Rev. Frank Graeff, a Methodist minister, wrote the hymn, Does Jesus Care? A series of heartbreaks forced him to pen the song with its string of commonly asked questions. But before then, Rev. Graeff had been nicknamed the “Sunshine Minister”. Armed with a joyful personality, he had a special way with children. He was a highly unlikely candidate for depression. But disaster struck and the radiant Reverend rocked emotionally. Soon after, faith triumphed and he bounced back: O yes, He cares; I know He cares; His heart is touched with my grief...I know my Saviour cares. Whatever you are going through now let faith answer your grief: “I know my Saviour cares”.

Challenge: "Even in my darkest hour, God remains faithful"

Prayer:: "God of grace, strengthen my failing heart."

TIME NAVIGATOR

"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15, 16)

Time flies! You have heard this saying before, no doubt, but have you ever asked the next logical question, “but to where?” For most young people time moves fast, but to nowhere really. Time ticks off to endless chatter, to meaningless engagements, to long hours of sleep, to eventual mediocrity. Their time is flying but they are not wise enough to direct it to useful activities that would add value to life. There is "the set time," says the Scripture (Psalm 102:13). Let me ask you: Is it enough that an airplane is flying? Shouldn’t the pilot have a destination in mind?

Your time flies like an airplane and you are the pilot. How and to what you channel your time matters. What is your goal in life? Channel your time towards the fulfilment of a worthy life-goal. Set goals that will shape your life and glorify God when achieved. That alone is the path of wisdom.

Challenge: "Time flies. It’s up to you to be the navigator. – Robert Orben"

Prayer:: "Order my steps, Lord, and let not aimless living ruin me."

PEER PRESSURE

"My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not" (Proverbs 1:10)

Peer pressure is the social demand on somebody to adopt a behaviour, dress or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group. Modern technology has shrunk the world and peer pressure has assumed a frightening dimension. Youths in one part of the globe are now often intimidated or lured to conform to the so-called youth culture in another part of the globe.

Today’s youth culture may smack of rebellion, addictions, perversions, unbridled lusts and self-worship but the command of God is still, "Consent thou not." The Netherlands was the first nation on earth to legalise same-sex marriages on April 1, 2001. Several Western nations have since followed suit. Today, they are mounting enormous pressure on other nations to fall in line. Gay rights have now consigned the overpowering need for socio-economic development to the background. In the same manner, you may find the pressure to follow the sinful ways of your peers mounting on all sides, yet the command of God to you is, "Consent thou not."

Challenge: "If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything"

Prayer:: "Lord, strengthen me to be the last man standing for you."

MODERN MANIA

"All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Corinthians 6:12)

The word "mania" means preoccupation or addiction to something. Once upon a time addictions were all about hard drugs and alcohol, but today, there are a new set of addictions. It has assumed a new social and cultural dimension. In October 2013, there was a story about a teen who committed suicide. His mobile phone had been withdrawn as punishment for not doing his homework and he could not imagine life without the device. This led to his death by suicide. Obsessions could be deadly.

Obsession with the internet or to social media platform like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has taken many young people from internet use to internet dependence and addiction. An addict will stay with his enslaving habit even when he knows that this is ruining him. Apostle Paul says, “all things are not expedient" and that he will make use of legitimate things but he will never permit anything to control him. As a Christian, you should make the same declaration.

Challenge: "Better be in control than be on a roll"

Prayer:: "Father, break every enslaving habit in my life."

Further Reading: Matthew 6:24-33

Quotation:: "Obsessions could be deadly"

GOD OF JUDGEMENT

"Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart... but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgement" (Ecclesiastes 11:9)

Charles Taylor was president of Liberia, Africa's oldest republic, for six years. That is as high as any citizen of a country would wish to rise. However, in Charles Taylor’s case, power and glory was built on a foundation of violence, rape, murder and maiming of innocent civilians. He was once a President until 2003, then an exile and fugitive, and now a war criminal. The warlord, who made many to tremble, was in free fall! Finally, in May 2013 at 65, ex-President Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50 years in jail.

A sinner may escape men’s condemnation but without repentance and cleansing in the blood of Jesus, he cannot escape the judgement of God. Sin may be sweet while it lasts but the pleasures of sin are not worth the bitterness of eternal punishment that is sure to follow. Repent of your sins and be saved today.

Challenge: "God’s judgement mill grinds slowly but surely, repent"

Prayer:: "Just as I am without one plea, Oh Lamb of God I come."

WHO DIRECTS YOUR STEPS?

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way" (Psalms 37:23)

Increasingly, young people are considering themselves as free-thinkers. A free thinker is a person who refuses to accept established views or teachings, especially on religion. He is a nonbeliever. His life is governed by what he considers right or wrong.

The truth is that everyone is influenced and directed by a higher power. Those whose lifestyle conforms to the evil systems of this world are controlled by “the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). But “the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord”. His actions are influenced by the Holy Spirit. This glorious experience makes it easy for this person to delight in God’s way. But none is good until one by faith and repentance receives the Saviour Jesus Christ who paid the price for our sins. Special grace for a godly lifestyle comes from Christ. Have you accepted Christ’s offer of salvation?

Challenge: "God is always overjoyed to lead His children"

Prayer:: "Lord, I submit myself to your guidance."

EXCELLENT ESTHER

"Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him" (Esther 2:20)

The name Esther means “a star”. Indeed, Esther was a leading light. Her journey from a humble beginning to the throne of the powerful Persian Empire started from the home of her elder cousin, Mordecai. If anybody had excuses for failure, Esther had more logical ones. She was not only an orphan but also a captive in Persian land. But God considered her fit to be used as a deliverer of the Jews.

Even when Esther was crowned queen by the order of Emperor Ahasuerus, she remained very submissive to her guardian. She was directed by him not to reveal her nationality and she totally obeyed. In these days when children are being rebellious, how glorious it is to live by the Bible’s instruction: “Children, obey your parents... Honour thy father and mother (Ephesians 6:1, 2). It is divine duty to obey them. That’s where blessings lie.

CHRIST'S CREATURE

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Seventeen years ago a troubled 12-year-old boy broke into a classroom at his elementary school in a rural Northern California town to steal $300 that classmates had saved for a field trip. Recently, he returned to repay the debt and left a thoughtful apology which reads in part, "I have enclosed this money in restitution of what I have done in an attempt to make this matter right, amends for my wrong." Says Principal James Berardi: "I hope it gives him what he wants, what he was seeking. I don't know if that was to lift a burden off him." Adds teacher Willow DeFranco: "It touched my heart." The incident has become a teaching moment at the school.

Today, millions of hardened youths are being genuinely transformed through the gospel of Christ. To be in Christ involves recognising your sinfulness; a resolve to dump every sin and connect to Him by faith. No one experiences Christ and remains the same in life.

Challenge: "The only proof of your salvation is the changed of life"

Prayer:: "Lord, I come to you today just as I am and surrender myself to you."

WEIGH YOUR WORDS

"In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise" (Proverbs 10:19)

Few things can betray a person more than his words. Have you ever been in the company of a stranger that you admired for his appearance but when he opened his mouth, your admiration for him disappeared? That is how words betray. Words reveal the content of the heart. Our Lord Jesus says that much: “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34).

Two things are important concerning our words. One is the quality of the words and the other is the quantity of the words. You must be concerned about both. Quality has to do with how relevant your words are. Quantity refers to the amount of words spoken. It is wisdom to speak relevant and timely words. “Multitude of words” (excessive talking) has a tendency to result in misuse of the tongue that can lead to exaggeration, lying, boasting and slander. It is much wiser and safer to mind your words.

Challenge: "Always weigh your utterances to avoid getting into trouble"

Prayer:: "Father, help to say things that will edify others."

WRONG WITNESS

"If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong..." (Deuteronomy 19:16)

It is somewhat common in many parts of the world to see an angry mob beating or lynching a person that has been merely accused of an offence. It is called "jungle justice" – a situation where people take the law into their hands. Indeed, people are becoming more impatient with the slow legal process, but that is not enough an excuse to by-pass the due process of the law. This is meant to protect innocent people from unnecessary punishments.

God is displeased to see a person suffer for a crime he or she never committed. This is why He gave commandment against false witness (false accusation) in the Ten Commandments. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour", it states. God instructed the Israelites that if a person falsely accused another, the accuser would be made to suffer the punishment he intended for the accused. And to avoid any malicious accusation, more than one witness is required to establish a matter. A Christian must not accuse people falsely.

Challenge: "A true witness of Christ must avoid false allegation"

Prayer:: "Lord, help me never to accuse anyone wrongly."

BETTER THAN BIRDS

"Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (Matthew 6:26)

One health condition that is silently claiming many lives today is stress. It has been rightly called “the invisible disease”. You are exposed to it to certain degrees. A mild dose of it may do no harm and, may indeed help you face challenges. Often, stress stems from worry and anxiety, especially, about the future.

Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us a lesson on this subject. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow....” He said. In modern language, “have no anxiety for the future”. Yes, plan and prepare well, but have no anxiety. In the main Scripture above, Christ draws your attention to the birds which do not labour as you do but depend on God for the provision of their daily needs. If you are tempted to get anxious about emerging challenges, why not trust your heavenly Father who takes care of the birds? He will take care of you.

Challenge: "A true witness of Christ must avoid false allegation"

Prayer:: "Father, give me unwavering faith to trust you for my needed supplies."

CHECK YOURSELF

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" (2 Corinthians 13:5)

Indeed, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” observed Socrates centuries ago. When you are sick, you are advised to see a doctor. He will subject you to a check-up in order to determine what is wrong with you. It is only a hypocrite that would assume that all is well when indeed things are going wrong. Many self-styled young ‘born-again Christians’ of today live in sin, indulging in all kinds of evils (1 John 2:15).

When you rarely examine your everyday life in the light of the Scripture and yet claim you are headed for Heaven, you are only deceiving yourself! Take for instance; when you hang around with that boy or girl in immoral affairs, you are committing the sin of fornication. The only thing you can do to avert the wrath of God is to give up all sins and accept Jesus as your Saviour.

Challenge: "Examine your life today and be sure of your spiritual status"

Prayer:: "Let your Word guide me, O Lord."

FOOTSTEPS OF FAITH

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe..." (Hebrew 11:6)

Faith is the ladder through which you can reach God. Many youth have gone through very difficult situations climbing through the ladder. Your faith determines your ability to walk with the Lord. When you repented of your sins and accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you have taken the greatest step of faith. Through faith, men have shown confidence in God in very difficult situations, as they trusted in His unfailing ability. The Bible states that without this element — faith — you cannot please God.

In the Bible, there is the story of a teenager called David, who had great faith in God. As a youth, David refused to look at the stature of Goliath of Gath. Though a warlord of many battles, David stood up to Goliath by faith and overcame him. He earned himself the label ‘a man after God’s heart’ (Psalm 89:20). You too can live a life of faith if you trust God.

Challenge: "Be a winner, take on life's battles by faith"

Prayer:: "Lord, increase my faith."

TAKE TIME

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

The preacher has said it all; there is time for everything. Time is perhaps the most important factor in taking decisions in life. We have different seasons and the time that each functions. The spring, summer, autumn and winter don’t just happen at once; each has its own time and duration. You need to use your time profitably. Time wasted cannot be recovered, and that’s all the reason you should plan your day before you set out so as to achieve something worthwhile.

Are you complaining about lack of time? Then hear what Fred Smith says, “Great men never complain about lack of time. Alexander the Great and John Wesley accomplished everything they did in twenty-four hour days.” As a Christian, you should have time for study, siesta, recreation and fellowship. Always have time to fellowship with God in the private and other believers during fellowship. How will you use your time today?

Challenge: "Remember, there is ‘a time for every purpose"

Prayer:: "Lord, help me to use my time properly."

Quotation:: "Time is valuable"

SERVE LIKE SAMUEL

"And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision" (1 Samuel 3:1)

Are you one of those Christians who give various reasons why you are not involved in the work of God? Some of these reasons have to do with your age. As young as Samuel was, he served the Lord. Age should not be a barrier to serving God in your life. Samuel lived an outstanding holy life in spite of corrupting influences of Eli’s children. Unlike Hophni and Phinehas, he was distinct and committed to serving the Lord. From a humble background, Samuel became one of the renowned heroes of faith (1 Samuel 3:20, Hebrews 11:32).

It is sad to see today, children with godly upbringing and example, growing up to despise God's word. We are encouraged however, to see many in our Church who from Children choir, progressed to the youth and adult choirs while also pursuing their education. Today, they are reliable workers in the Church and in their chosen secular careers. Like Samuel, you must dare to be different.

Challenge: "God puts down the mighty ones and exalt the humble"

Prayer:: "Lord, Like Samuel, make me a lily in the miry clay."

Further Reading: Hebrews 11: 31- 40

Quotation:: "Yield yourself to God"

ANSWER TO ANXIETY

"There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked" (Isaiah 48:22)

At the age of 36, Kelly Bent, was already a Professor of Chemistry. He was comfortably married to Esther and had three lively kids. Life looked very rosy and bright for Bent family. There was however something missing in it. They lacked joy. The absence of peace and harmony was destroying the home. On several occasions, Esther would try to occupy herself with endless movies but these brought her no lasting joy.

One day, Joseph, an undergraduate student of Chemistry summoned courage and spoke to his teacher. 'Sir, I have observed that it’s like you always worn a blank look, is there any problem?' The troubled Professor could not hide his woes and so he narrated the sad story about his family to the youngster. Joseph simply said, 'Sir, Jesus is the answer to your problem.' He then preached to him and the Professor surrendered to Jesus Christ and had peace with God. If you too have any problems robbing you of your peace and joy, then take it to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Challenge: "Take your entire burden to the Lord"

Prayer:: "Be the Lord of my life O Jehovah."

Further Reading: John 8:12

TRANSACTION WITH TRUTH

TEXT: "Buy the truth and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding" (Proverbs 23:23)

The forces of darkness, led by Satan, are engaged in a fierce war against the children of light. Not only do they try to hinder people from getting saved but they also do all they can to make believers to despise and doubt the word of God. Their main goal is to make the children of God backslide.

It helps to get saved and sanctified. The Bible, which is the Sword of the Spirit and the Truth, is a priceless document that God has given to mankind. It is a lamp and light to our path as Christians. Satan wants us to drop it and take up his own provided through his wicked human agents.

However, our text says, "Buy the truth and sell it not." You sell the truth when you read other materials and forget the Bible; and when you leave the true preachers and teachers of God's and go after false teachers. Saints of old like Martin Luther, held on to the truth till the end. We too can.

Challenge: "Be strong in saying the truth"

Prayer: "Oh Lord help me to buy the truth of your word."

LEARN FROM THE LEPERS

TEXT: "...We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace:" (2 Kings 7: 9)

The story of four lepers who were starving to death at the gate of Samaria was a sad one. By divine provision, they stumbled on enormous spoils that their fleeing enemies had abandoned. Initially, they were concerned only about keeping away many goods for themselves, but their conscience would not allow that, and they said to themselves, “We do not well”. They realised that it was wrong for them to keep such good news to themselves. Hence, they informed the king's household in the city of Samaria and soon, there was abundance of food for all.

These lepers have set a good example for all believers in Christ to emulate. Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. We must spread the Gospel message. “Not to preach the Gospel means that we hide the medicine from the sinner,” says Reinhard Bonnke. Without salvation, sinners will die and go to hell.

Challenge: "Make spreading the news a priority"

Prayer:: "Lord, make me a daily witness for you."

CLEVERLY CREATED

TEXT: "Thou art worthy oh Lord to receive glory…for Thou has created all things and for Thy pleasure they are:" (Revelation 4:11)

The Robin is among the first songbirds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of discrete units that are repeated. It sings tunefully, probably, in praise of God (Song 2:2). Are you aware all creatures are created for His glory and praise? The bird may not have as much knowledge as you; yet it gives pleasure to its Creator through its melodious songs. Do you realise that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and that you were created to praise God every day of your life? Hebrews 13:15 says, "let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually."

Besides other things you are expected to do on this earth, you must spend time praising the Lord with all your heart. Jehoshaphat and his army did that when faced with a serious battle and defeated their enemies, Paul and Silas also sang in the jail and were released miraculously by God. Have you praised your creator today?

Challenge: "Do you always remember to praise?"

Prayer:: "Lord, teach me the power of praise."

Further Reading: Psalm 50:1-6

Quotation:: "Praise God every day"

MESSIAH'S MESSAGE

TEXT: "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in thissinful generation..." (Mark 8: 38)

The world is overflowing today with technological breakthroughs, including telecommunications. As a result of this advancement, messages of various forms now fly across the globe at an alarming rate. The SMS, Twitter, E-Mail, Skype, Facebook, Whats-APP etc., are all modern means of sending all kind of messages. The youths of today are having a field day sending and receiving thousands of messages on a daily basis, using these media and appliances.

Are you involved in sending messages to your friends and acquaintances? The question is, 'what kind of messages do you send'? Do you know that you are a messenger of good news to your world? Has it ever occurred to you to say to someone, may be a schoolmate or an acquaintance that 'Jesus loves you'?" From today, you can also use the social media to spread the gospel to friends. As many doors are being slammed against street and 'door to door' evangelism, these may yet be your open doors. Preach the Word!

Challenge: "Determine to share the good news"

Prayer: "Father, help me to boldly declare your word."

Further Reading: Acts 5: 42

Quotation:: "Preach the Word!"
