LIKE SOME SAY when the elements of weather especially rain becomes unbearable, in their fustration or expression, they go- it has been raining cats, dogs, lions, tigers, elephant, hippopotamus.... and what have you. That has it has been for the past five days, it was either drizzling or raining heavily. Already posing hazard in riverine and areas with poor drainage. The sky was darkened in the early hours of that morning needing no forecaster to tell it was going to come down in torrents anytime soon. Despite it all, he came out of the house and limped with great difficulty out of the house. Anyone watching from afar needed no soothsayer to tell that he was a very sad man. Just by window of the house stood his daughter with a worried frown on her beautiful face. He raised his hands towards heaven and cried out. 'Oh God! I have trusted, served and depended on you from my teen. So many have happened that I don't understand and have questioned yet I'm still in the dark, ' The breeze caressed his lean frame and the water dripped down his face. 'You know everything that has happened and how it tored me apart with much bitterness. 'He swallowed hard. 'Many a times, I am driven to want to fight back but I can't go diabolical. When I look at myself and think about my daughter, my spirit fails. Lord! Lord Almighty, the Creator of the universe, the beginning and the end, your eyes are not blind that you cannot see my situation, your ears are not deaf that you cannot hear my heart cry, your hands are not short that you cannot reach out to the world you created and do justice. ' He slumped on his knees with tears trickling down his wrinkled face. 'I believe in your words, in your promises -' He raised an index finger. 'You promised me that you will fight for me and I shall hold my peace …Lord, you said hand join in hand, the wicked shall not go unpunished …you said whatever we sow, that we shall reap … you also said …Oh my father... ' His voice trailed off and his body trembled. 'You said vengeance is yours, you will repay …' Lightening flashed brightly and thunder clapped. 'Avenge by adversaries! Avenge my adversaries! You are the hammer that break the rock in pieces! ' His voice rose as he mustered all the energy he could. 'I have made you my chief warrior, leash out your judgment …this is the last of my heart desire, this is my last demand, this is my last request. ' His hands clenched into fists and he shook emphatically. 'God! this is my request! Prove to the world that there is always a boomerang effect on every evil done regardless of the period. I know the arrow of ricochet of cataclysm is bound to be fired! 'The lightening shone, illuminating the vicinity powerfully for seconds, then the thunder clapped so violently that his daughter trembled slightly and covered both ears. The sky had let loose and a pool had formed around him. 'For my dear child …' His voice was calm and he placed both palms together before him. 'bless her heart o Lord …look upon my little girl and do to her as you will …do to her as you will …' He bowed and sobbed like a child, his body shook convulsively in pain more of the heart than body. 'I can't take this pain anymore …' She wanted to go out and help him up but she had been suffering from cold, she was sure her father would not appreciate her coming out in the rain because there was no money to treat her condition if it got pretty worst. +++ *-* He came out from his room clothed. 'Honey, what are you doing? ' She closed the lid of the pot and smiled.'Making breakfast for us, it will be ready in five minutes. ' She turned, covered the distance between them and adjusted the collar of his T shirt. 'Honey, you should have made for you alone. ' His voice calm but sad. 'Aw Daddy …' she drawled disapprovingly. 'even if we don't have, we can manage together. ' 'I love you dearie. ' He opened his arms and she went in all in smiles for a hug. 'You are the most wonderful child in the world.' He kissed her forehead. 'Excuse my going to bed.' 'Of course daddy but for just five minutes. Do you want me to come tuck you? ' 'No honey, I will be fine all by myself, take care.' His face light up and the resemblance they shared became obvious. Same smile revealing a perfect set of white teeth and gap tooth..'I love you.' She laughed infectiously. 'I will daddy and I love you so much. ' He turned and limped to the door to hide his hurt expression. 'Bless you my princess, ' He whispered before leaving with tears in his eyes. +++ *-* She turned on the switch of the bulb. 'Daddy …' She drawled sweetly. 'Food is ready and this is something delicious. Daddy, ten minutes is already gone, I gave you a grace of five minutes.' She made a face knowing her discussion was enough to wake her for he was a conscious sleeper. 'Daddy. ' She called and climbed the bed, your meal is set. ' She tickled him and the only response was her own laughter. 'Come on dad, please stop this. ' She tickled him once more at the side but was met with the formal response. She looked at his face with soberly. 'You know we have been through a lot, this is not the kind of joke that should amuse us.' She waited and then her brows creased to a frown. She took his hand and dropped it, it just dropped. Panick surged through her. She placed a head on his chest to feel his heart beat. 'No …no …' She dismissed the sudden reality and became hysterical. She positioned herself to his side and used all the strength she could muster to do a mouth to mouth breathing like she had seen her elder brother do some years back. She went on and on. Beads of sweat now crowded her face and neck. 'Jesus come to my aid …' She muttered and pant for air. She exert pressure as many as she could on his chest. She touched his face and she felt a strange coldness. Then it hit her like a bolt from the blues. She place her face on his chest and sobbed. 'You know you can't do this …you can't just …just leave me …' She glanced up as the ceiling. 'Oh God …how can you do this to me …?How can you …? How can you render me so …' Her tears flowed. 'It's unfair, you know it is unfair! It's unfair!!' She screamed soulfully, rolled off the bed and sat with her back to the wall her legs outstretched. She stared into space dazed but her tears poured. An image of the knife she had used for the onions earlier flashed back in her mind. She shook her head, they would be disappointed in her. She wouldn't see them, because she would be going to a different place. She was sixteen, she had a distasteful feel of wind of fate. +++ 7 Likes 3 Shares |

TWO Katherine Sylvester alighted from the bus, clutched the traveling bag handle on her shoulder and used her right hand to straightened out her black gown with a yellow belt strapped around her waist. A yellow beret was shaped to a side with her long hair tucked in. She stood five feet, seven inches tall as she waited for the bus to move ahead before crossing to the other side of the road. Her skin glowed reminding one of chocomilo. Her brows were full, her face oblong. You wouldn't call her fat neither slim, if one was compelled to pick one of the adjective, slim would be chosen, with all curves and cleavages well represented and positioned. Simple but attractive was the common compliment she got! It was past 9, the sun was set and at it's best, so hot that it could boil an egg. She kept on trekking, the sun the least of her problems. She had three street to walk through before she got to a bus stop Where she would board a bus that will lead her home. She decided to take the shortest route she could remember to her destination. She cornered to the street across her. The street was cool because of the much shady trees and calm because it was obviously a street for the rich. She sighed feeling thirsty but she thought against waiting for a minute on the street. All handy men, women were off to work even children were in school. Katherine continued her journey without looking back even at sometimes the bark of dogs or the cat calls of gatekeepers who were idly outside. She took another turn and admired the street for it look like a boulevard with magnificent buildings. It now appeared like she had not passed there before. Halfway through the street, a building made her slowed her pace, it was the administrative building of an industrial but popular organization. It was extravagantly yet impeccably designed. A notice board made her halt, a cleaner should apply within. Katherine smiled, it was like a answer to her prayer. She wanted to work this time Where she can see what it was like for people who have actualized her kind of dream if all things had been equal. She was past wallowing in self pity. She approached the gigantic gate. As she stepped her feet into the waters of the company, she came face to face with a security man. 'Good morning Sir.' She greeted with a smile and noticed five other pair of careful eyes watching her. 'Good morning, how may I help you? ' His gave her an encouraging smile. 'I came concerning the notice I saw outside. ' 'That is not the kind of job for you.' The elderly man said with a scrutinizing look. 'I know Sir but I need it.' She stated simply not embarrassed. After few seconds of consideration, he spoke. 'Walk to your right as though you intend going round the building, you will noticed a detached building. Ask for the head cleaner and express yourself. ' 'Thank you very much Sir.' She gave him her big and appreciation smile. 'You're welcome. 'He returned and watched her leave. such a well mannered girl and a beauty too, Why would she want to do that kind of job? He was thoughtful. 'Oga, ' One of the younger security man called. 'Who is she? ' His eyes not leaving the retreating figure. 'Ask me again! ' He snapped before going to sit and balancing a club on his lap. +++ *-* Katherine admired the neatness and serenity of her environment until she got to the building. She took deep breath before knocking. The door was opened by a woman in her mid fifties. 'Good morning ma.' She bent slightly to greet with a smile. 'Welcome my pickin, wetin I fit do for you? ' She had an overall on top of her clothes. Katherine knew that to obtain favor from people you have to speak to them in a language best understood by them. 'I de ask of the head cleaner. ' 'Na me be that. ' She answered proudly, 'wetin you want? ' 'I come because of the notice wey I see for outside.' 'You wan apply? ' She asked retaining her smile but studying the young lady with motherly eyes. 'Yes ma.' She answered. 'Okay my pickin come inside. ' She stood aside for her. 'Sit don. ' She gestured to a chair. An unmistakable coolness took over the hotness she had felt. Aircondition in the cleaners wing! That wasn't the only surprise, there were about 12 black chrome vinyl chair around a centre table. The floor was covered .with modern tiles . She sat and the head cleaner sat across her. She heard voices from inner rooms and saw what she presumed was the store. Katherine filled the form she was given and after glancing through the form, she spoke. 'I know say girl like you no suppose do this job but anything fit happen for life and me, ' She shook her head. 'I don get my share, person suppose chop and live like person. I don de work here for fifteen years. ' 'Woah! ' Katherine join the flow. 'That na long time, you deserve the post you de now.' The HC grinned. 'Ha my pickin! I de happy for the post wella, less work, more money but I deserve am. Back to business like Oyibo people they say …' She adjusted herself on the seat and laughed. 'To be cleaner here, you de serious and hardworking. Our Oga kpatakpata like make everywhere de neat pass hospital. We de resume 7 make we fit tidy everywhere before workers go come by 8. We go start you with twenty five thousand, if you do your work well, after six months we go top am. Na monday to friday, Shay you ready to work ?' 'Yes ma. ' That would be the highest salary she would ever earn. 'You go start next tomorrow. ' She said finally. 'Thank you very much ma.' 'Thank God my pickin, this place no be like any other office, we no get anything to give you except water. ' 'I am okay ma, Thank you. ' She stood bend her knees to show appreciation. 'When you come on Monday, we go give you everything you go need. ' She was seeing her off when the phone began to ring. ' Emmm... I no go fit follow you reach gate.' 'Yes ma, goodbye ma.' she said before the HC hurried in. Shading her eyes with a palm , she looked up at the skyscraper to see the name - SIGISMUND INTERNATIONAL. Back in secondary school she knew it was owned by a black American, a considerate one to be precise. She head towards the way she came and the security man met her. 'Any hope of seeing you soon? ' He asked almost in a whisper because he could see the other security man's ear enlongating. 'Yes.' She replied whispering, she got the cue. 'Thank you very much Sir. ' 'Thank God Miss, see you tomorrow. ' He returned the smile. As she stepped out and felt the scorch of the sun, she increased her strides and adjusted her beret, now she was hurry to get home. On sighting a mart, she stopped to buy sachet water. +++ 5 Likes |

KATHERINE LOOKED UP from the pay cheque she had collected at the hiss and the noisy chewing of bubble gum. The secretary looked away drumming her fixed nails painted red on the polished desk. This had been what she had to go through for the past seven months. One day … one of these days, she knew she would ask the secretary to the Account director if she suffers from drooling. She was always chewing or munching. She walked out to the corridor smartly and heard the secretary hiss once more. She also felt a pair of eyes was observing her but she didn't turn back . +-+ Katherine had barely sat when the phone rang. The head cleaner picked the CUG. 'YES Sir …any problem …I go tell am.' She looked at Katherine as she pocketed the phone. 'Katherine the director for account they call you.' She went wide eyed, her heart skipping a beat. 'Wetin happen? ' It was an unusual call. 'E no tell me my pickin, e just say make you come now now. ' she replied before turning to two ladies gisting at a corner. 'Time never reach for una duty abi! Abi una no sabi wetin agogo de talk! ' She told them rebukingly and immediately hurried to the store. She removed her overall and hung it in the changing room. She wondered what was wrong, she was out of duty and she wasn't even in charge of the AD's office. She had to pass through that girl again! She frowned. Hey girlie, don't put those kind of people in mind because they will fulfil their purpose of putting you down. All you need do is to ignore and place your head high up. She smiled, the inner Katherine was on duty. She pressed a button and soon the elevator doors slide open. Few minutes later, Katherine walked past the secretary. 'Heys! Heys! Where do you think you're going to? Heys! Heys! Are you deaf? ' The secretary was on her feet dropping her phone in the process. Katherine turned looked at her sides before placing a hand on her chest. 'Are you talking to me? ' 'No myself! ' She retorted. 'I guess so too.' She smiled sweetly. 'Keep talking to yourself.' She marched off before she could think of a retort. She stared at the departing figure mouth agape. She recovered quickly, fuming. Her boss had already informed her of her coming yet she was filled with jealousy. +++ *-* At his response, she opened the door and entered. Patrick Sunday removed his glasses and gave a scrutinizing look from head to toe. 'Katherine you look so beautiful, kind of a mermaid just that you're not light skinned. Your dress Oh …' He sat back in his black big chair. 'How can a cleaner have such taste. You're so different and to think that all this is for me, hmmmm …' He smacked his lips. 'I - am- the - luckiest -man -alive! ' He practically sang. 'Sit Katherine, what can I offer you.' She had listened to him with a blank expression, still at the door. 'I don't want to sit and accept an offering. ' The respect she had for him vanished. She had seen him about five times from a distance. He was almost same height with her or probably an inch taller. Dark skinned, allowed a trimmed moustache, kept a full hair. He was plumb, late forties but looked younger. 'Hmmm... ' He smiled. 'I know the women stuff, playing hard to get, so tell me darling, how much do you need to sit? ' Katherine tilted her head to a side then back but said nothing. 'Look like everything is set around here and all I need would is book reservation in a hotel. ' He picked his mobile phone and scrolled through. She folded her arms and watched him. 'Hello …this is …' 'Mr Patrick …' 'Pat please... ' He maintained his smile. Like he hadn't spoken, he went on. 'Mr Patrick Sunday, you're wasting your time, Why am I actually here? ' She move forward and sat on a vinyl chair. He ended the call and gave a short laugh. 'You're not trying to get me angered. ' 'Why am I actually here? ' She repeated calmly. 'We have a conversation last time and I asked you to think about what we discussed …' He decided it was best not to get angry. 'Discussion? I can't remember. ' Her brows darkened thoughtfully. Patrick was taken aback at her seriousness, she looked as serious as a teen trying to aim at a bird to win the love of a girl. 'The hotel thing, continuous money supply, promotion and a car. ' He smile. 'You thought about it, you promised you would. ' 'I did not such thing.' She smiled. 'Ha-ah! Now I remember but I didn't think about it.' 'What do you mean.' He was confused and irritated. 'I told you there was nothing to think about. Before I left your office, I drop my response and conversation here. So am here, same conversation, same response, my answer remains no.' He shook his head. 'I can't believe this, this is the first throw back am receiving. ' Katherine beamed. 'Woah! ' She applauded herself to his chagrin. Patrick shook his head as if the inevitable as happened. 'Katherine you don't know what you are doing, you are throwing the opportunity of a lifetime just likely that. ' 'I can't make anything out of that. ' She opened a palm and raised it expressingly. 'I don't care about that, I don't care about that, I don't care if it is a pleasure for life, an opportunity of a lifetime or an enjoyment forever. I hope you understand. ' She met his gaze. 'You don't understand my dear. ' Patrick told her emphatically. 'I have been watching you for five months. I am usually that patient. I observed you're unique. I know a unique and beautiful girl when I see one even if she is in the costume of a clown, the coverings of a masquerade or the overall of a cleaner. You're sweet and is with great pleasure, I am offering to take care of you. ' He stood, turned to perch on his desk. 'I like you Kate, we spend a Saturday in a hotel and do lot of interesting things. I promise it will be an unforgettable day for you.' Like a flash on a pan, he sat on the vinyl chair beside her, pulled her wheeled chair close and attempted to kiss her. Katherine jolted to her feet like she suddenly felt fire burning through her buttocks. She stepped back maintaining a distance . 'Hey babe, easy.' He laughed revealing a set of newly white polished teeth. 'I don't bite.' 'How long will I do this hotel thing?' She narrowed her brows in consideration. 'It is an enjoyment we can afford ourselves over and over again over time. ' He winked. 'As your payback, you have constant money supply, just ask and you get it.' 'Really? ' She gave him an encouraging smile. 'Yes baby girl, promotion and a car comes paripassu. ' 'A car, for me.' She placed a hand on her chest dramatically. 'Wow! but …but Sir, your wife don't have a car.' She lowered her full lashes. He ran his fingers through his hair. 'As … as for my wife, I will buy for her when I choose. For now you're the one I am willing to do things for.' She had saw his wife on a couple of occasion, the head cleaner had told her who she was. She had observed her from a distance. Katherine sobered. 'Is this what all the cleaners must go through?' 'I will be sincere with you, some of them.' He smiled, recovering quickly from the ackward moment. 'With all due respect Sir, if you do keep your promises, some of the cleaner would be driving cars. ' She shrugged. He opened his mouth to protest but she wasn't through. 'Spend that money and time with your family. My answer once more is no.' She made for the door. 'You are making the biggest mistake of your cleaner life and I will make sure you pay for it! ' He banged on the desk emphatically. Katherine turned around on a heel in a dramatically with a grimace. 'Hahaha! That is a classic joke that can make me laugh from my standing position to the floor. Let me make this clear, I am not afraid of Patrick Sunday, what he represent and am not afraid of loosing my job, with the look of things that is the highest you can do.' He blanched 'You are jeopardizing with you future and …' 'Be still Patrick! ' She interrupted sharply pointing an index finger. 'Who are you and what do you think you are to decide my future. Arrrrg …' She hissed irritated and left the door ajar. Patrick was stunned. The look on Katherine face must have been enough warning because the secretary opened her mouth and closed it. As she entered the elevator, something blared in her mind, Was there an affair between them? Oh poor secretary , she had been protecting her territory! The answer came immediately. She hissed once obvious irritated. +++ 3 Likes |

The retired Air Marsha, Moshood Yekini was seated in the sitting room of his magnificent mansion sipping soda and watching a documentary on TV. His wife came in after issuing out some instructions to the gardener, extravagantly dressed in a beautiful, black gown, she placed her hand bag on a glass side table and her fragrance of her cologne overpowered that of the air fresher. 'Hmmmm …welcome love. ' 'Thanks. ' She exhaled and kicked out her shoes. 'Anytime I attend their birthday parties, just seeing my grand children come together make me dance and dance. ' She chuckled. 'I even learnt new dance steps. ' She demonstrated to him, swayed her hips from side to side, flexed her legs one at a time and swinged it. He went wide eyed before bursting into laughter. She joined in the laughter before slumping into a sofa. 'My dear it was fun.' 'Yerima is a chip off my shoulder. Brilliant, handsome and tall. With the way he is growing, he might be six foot before he is twelve. ' He beamed. 'Haba my husband! ' Her brows narrowed. 'Did you see the look on his face when we gave him his birthday present? ' She almost giggled with excitement. ' Shock, smile, laughter and then hugging. ' He had come back home earlier than his wife, 'I love his declaration the most, that he was so proud and privileged to have us as his grand parents. ' He took the remote of the TV to change station. 'Every birthday celebration has become a huge challenge. ' 'Yea. ' She removed her shawl and sat back. 'Wonderful sons-in-law, lovely daughter -in-law, impressive four grand kids. What more can I ask of ...?' She paused thoughtfully. 'and to think that you would have spent all those beautiful moments suffering somewhere... mmmh.' She shuddered. 'Aishat! Aishat! Can you do me of favor and stop reminding of that incident ?' His voice had rose in anger. 'Forgive me my dear, forgive me. ' She made to kneel. 'I will eat now.' He said flatly. 'Yes dear. Titi! Titi …' She called one of the maids. +++ *** Shakirat Yekini Ayomide entered the anteroom and rushed to the counter almost straining her leg. 'Nurse... my... ' She began breathlessly. 'Darling. ' The voice approached her. She hurried towards her husband with a thudding heart and forehead beaded with sweat. 'What …what did you say actually happened to my Prince?' 'Darling please calm down …' He used a finger to massage his forehead. 'I can't even explain this myself.' Tobiloba Ayomide raised a hand and dropped it.' Shakirat glared at her husband as panic surge through her. Just then, Moshood and Aisha approached them walking as fast as their feet could carry them. 'Tobi and shakirat, what happened to my grandson? ' Aisha demanded. They just looked at her. The doctor walked towards them and they directed their attention to him. His expression was blank. 'Doctor how is my boy faring? ' Moshood spoke trying to read the doctor's facial expression. One look at their faces and the doctor decided it was not the right atmosphere to brake the news. 'Sirs, can we see in my office? ' He said with a thin smile and led the way. 'What happened Shaki? ' She adjusted the shawl around her neck. 'I don't know …' Her hands dropped from her head and she shifted her weight from one feet to the other. 'I was in the board meeting when I got a message from Tobi that Prince had been rushed to the hospital. I hurried down here …as fast I could. I was actually asking for details when you and daddy came. Oh God please come to my aid.' She raised both hands frantically. Moshood touched the arm of the young doctor half way up the stairs, stopping him . 'We are not kids, tell us what is wrong? ' 'You know our standard in this hospital, we gave and did our best for him but he appears he was brought in to be proven clinically dead.' 'No!!! ' Tobi screamed and bend over using the rail to support himself. That attracted the attention of the women and they looked up just in time to see Moshood lose balance and began rolling down the stairs. He landed in prone position motionless . 'No!! ' Aisha screamed and ran to her husband. Shakira held the doctor. 'Tell me what happened to my son! Tell me! 'She demanded hotly as tears rolled down her cheeks smearing her make up. 'He is dead madam .' He replied calmly. Her hand froze and before she could throw herself down, Tobi held her tightly. 'Not my Prince! No! I refuse to believe it. God where are you …? No! Doctor ...you must have mistakened my son for another. He kissed me goodbye this morning. ' She shook her head as tears left as eyes like a dam that just broke free. 'Baby please …' He bit his lower lips as tears filled his eyes. He led her to a seat. 'Baby please help me …please.' Was all Tobi could manage since a part of his world had come crashing like a pack of cards, never to be again. Moshood had been raised to a stretcher and was being wheeled to the emergency ward. Tobi helped his mother -in- law up and led her to a seat . 'Mum, calm down please. Let me see daddy is faring ' He wiped his face and the tears came down immediately. He head the way they had wheeled Moshood. Shakira burst into tears and her whole body shook. Aisha embraced her as her head began pounding. 'Mummy why... why? ' Shakirat muttered. +++ 2 Likes 1 Share |

'I'm calling from Surulere. How're you? ' 'Cool... cool, which game would you like to play? ' 'The game with the eleventh commandment. ' 'You know the rules of the game? ' 'Yes.' 'Okay …sixty seconds start right now, what do you think of government banning street …?' The ringing of the phone made Katherine sigh because the HC had to reduce the volume of the radio disrupting her best game show on radio. 'Hello …good afternoon …oga wetin I do, you de vex with me …sorry sir …hein … hein …she de …okay, okay …I don hear.' She dropped the phone on her lap. ' She directed her gaze to Katherine. 'You no clean the Oga account office well well? ' Katherine twitched her lips knowingly. 'Ma, you know me now, for the past seven months, you know as I de take do my work. ' 'I know, I supervise your portion but the man de vex wela. ' 'No be me clean the office finish, go help the girls for cafeteria.' She stood and went to the store. She took all what she needed and head out. 'My pickin,’ The head cleaner called when she was at the door. 'Take am easy with am, no argue with am, na so he de do.' 'Yes ma.' She said acknowledging the motherly advice. God please aid me, she muttered as she felt the scorch of the sun. She hurried to the main building and then the elevator. If he wanted her to clean his office again, she will do just that -she resolved. +++ *-* The secretary had not been on seat when she passed, just for her to get to the director office and the door was ajar. She hesitated at the door before she shrugged, knocked, waited for response and there was none, she took a couple of steps in. A frown etched her face when she noticed he wasn't on seat, probably he was using the comfort room, She took more steps in deciding to wait . As if on cue, the door slammed shut and a hand came over her mouth and the other around her stomach. While she tried to recover from the shock, the whisper came. 'You think you're smart. Remember, you did this to yourself, I get what I want, always do. You will get down with me on this office floor. ' Not in this lifetime, she told herself since he had sealed her mouth with his palm. As she struggled to free herself, she remembered defense. The sweeping brush she had come in with had fallen when she was grabbed, so also the some of the content of the mopping bucket because she had felt splash. She tried to bend but couldn't. Patrick tried to turn her to face him within his grip but couldn't and did not want to release her because she had proven to be a wild cat. Katherine pinched a mould of flesh around his abdomen and elbowed him at intervals trying to inflict pain but he was as head strong as she was. They lurched around the office, both sweating in the well conditioned room. Don't Let go of her, remember you swore to teach her a lesson, this is an opportunity to tame her, don't make a fool of yourself by letting her escape. Remember is only a woman not different from the ones you've dealt with in time past. She will get weak eventually for she is the weaker vessel. Patrick smirked having encouraged himself thoughtfully 'Oh what a pity! Such a sweet girl yet so stubborn. I am happy to tell you I have the perfect treatment. ' He cooed breathlessly. Katherine tried to remove his hands from her mouth, but it just stayed like it was super glued. If you don't help me this time, then I have every reason to end it all. She prayed, more of challenged as her vision blurred. She hadn't eaten any meal for the day and it was almost noon. Just then, the door opened. 'What in the world! ' Impulsively, Patrick pushed her away. She collided with one of the vinyl chairs and almost tumbled over. She got to her feet, picked the airfreshner from the floor and sprayed it on Patrick face who tried to block the spray. 'You …want to sleep with everything in skirt, I am sure …they will jump all over you now! ' It finished and she threw it at him. 'God reward you! ' She bent to pick three of the buttons of her overall that had fell off in the struggle. 'Mr Sunday, what is going on here? ' The voice demanded. He shivered slightly, lowered his gaze but his mouth remained shut, knowing that even if he came up with a good explanation, the shakiness of his voice may betray him. It was then, she looked at who her saviour was. He was black American! He looked from Patrick to the lady with so much expression of her anger even after an assault he knew would happened if he hadn't come when he did. 'Are you hurt Miss? ' 'Emmmm …I'm fine.' She picked what she had come with. 'Are you sure? ' He asked with eyes not leaving her. 'I am fine.' She said in spite of herself but she hoped it was assuring enough. She made to leave but he didn't step aside. 'See me in my office. ' He told her with a note of finality. Did she nod, she wasn't sure herself but he left the door for outside. Which office? was the question she wanted to ask but she couldn't find her voice. She followed to see Where he was heading but he strolled down the corridor to enter the large office that was shared by other accountants in the organization. She head for the elevator and almost sat on the floor but her thought prevailed against the weakness she felt . Who else could have made Patrick tremble, could this be the Director General and heir of Sigismund International company? She exhaled She felt pain on her lap and massaged it...The elevator opened and she stepped out. She decided to ask the head cleaner. +++ *-* Yerima Yekini entered the anteroom and sighting his mother, He hurried to her."" 'Mummy …what happened? I couldn't make out anything from what you told me over the phone. ' He said towering her. Aisha was seated, both palms under her chin, her eyes were sore from much crying. He removed his sun glasses and placed them in his bosom pocket before lowering himself to seat beside her. 'What is going on, what is happening? ' She burst into fresh set of tears. 'Aw mother .' He sombered as he drew her close to him by the shoulders. 'Come on mother, what is happening? Make sense to me please. ' She looked up at his face and her tears flowed. 'I hope this make enough sense to you. Your nephew Prince, is dead and your father rolled and fell off the stairs due to shock. Since he was wheeled in, I haven't heard anything, I haven't been told anything. ' She swallowed hard and her lips quivered. 'I don't know if he is alive or dead. ' She covered her mouth. 'No …no. ' He left go of her and stared into space. 'No, I spoke to Prince yesterday, how could he be dead today … I was suppose to take him out this weekend. ' He shook his head dazed . 'Where …Where is Tobi and Shaki? ' 'They just left to prepare for the burial ceremony coming up this evening. ' 'Burial? Prince dead? No …no mother... ' He buried his face in his palm. 'Don't hurt me more Yerima …please don't. ' She look towards the stairs where the incident had happened and sighed. 'Oh God, this is just too much for a day.' He buried his face in his palm. 'Don't hurt me more Yerima …please don't. ' She look towards the stairs where the incident had happened and she sighed. 'Oh God, this is just too much for a day.' A hand came to rest on his shoulder and he almost jumped. He had been lost in thought. 'Good afternoon Yeri. ' Yerima was up on his feet. 'Hey Bob, you can explain what is happening to my world? ' They walked away from Aisha. Bobby Uchenna was Yerima best friend in college and their friendship ran till date despite Yeri being a petroleum engineer. ' 'I am sorry about everything, I'm deeply sorry.' He expressed patting him at the back. 'Yeah.' He exhaled. 'How about my dad? ' 'No going around reality, I will be straight with you . ' He paused momentarily. 'Dad is under intensive care, equipments, tubes and all, his condition is critical. A cardiologist and a couple of neurologist are looking him up.' Yerima went wide eyed. 'That bad? ' 'Yea that bad. ' Bob affirmed. 'Jesus Christ! ' He worked his fingers through his hair as tears welled his eyes. 'All he need is prayers man.' Bob finalized not wanting to reveal anything further. 'Prayers?' Yerima almost scoffed. 'I can't even think straight talk more of praying. ' 'God is more interested in prayers from the heart. Just talk to him. I have to go now.' He smiled at his friend before hurrying along. 'What a way to be placed before the devil and the deep blue sea.' He muttered and wiped his tears. He pulled his phone to call his elder sister. He exhaled as his eyes welled again. What was he going to say to console her? He was the third child and only son while Shakirat was the first child. +++ *-* Katherine came into the secretaty office from the lobby, now dressed in a multicolored knee length gown, a low heeled black slippers and of course a scarf. It was no new thing that her hair was always covered in spite of various opinion about her action. She knew the attraction she got without the hair talk more of when she freed it. Hence, her decision remained. 'Good afternoon. ' She greeted the secretary. She looked from the typing she had been doing and a smile formed on her lips. 'Forgive me I can't remember your name.' She was in her mid twenties. 'Katherine. ' They had met once in the elevator and Precious had complimented her on her scarf and that prompted exchange of pleasantries. 'Welcome Katherine, what can I do for you? ' The smile remained plastered on her beautiful face. 'The boss asked me to see him.' Katherine returned the smile. 'Alright. ' She shrugged. 'I will have to call to him for confirmation before I Let you in.' 'Thank you.' She loved the secretary, she indeed know the word 'ethics '. Katherine took in her surroundings while the secretary was on the phone. 'Immaculate and homely were the adjectives that came to her mind. 'You can go in Katherine through that door,' She gestured. 'Another lovely scarf today.' She chuckled. 'Thank you.' Katherine halt at the door nervous but She took deep breaths, got her composure before knocking. 'Come in.' She opened the door and stepped in, the sight that met her was beyond her expectation. To be factual, since she stepped out of the elevator everything was beyond her expectation, but this, was just too much. The interior design, decoration and furniture was like nothing she had set eyes on . 'Woah! ' She muttered, then he saw him studying her in his Mayline Burgundy Leather High- Back Swivel Executive Office Chair. 'Good afternoon Sir. ' She lowered her eyes. 'I am sure your afternoon was not so good and since you've wished me one, i will say good rest of the afternoon to you.' Kelvin Sigismund smiled revealing a set a white teeth and dimples on his face . 'Do make yourself comfortable. ' He had a face that will make one want to take a second look and appreciate God for his creation whether consciously or unconsciously. He was fair, kept his hair low and was void of moustache . He stood six feet and an inch tall with his body trimmed. First impression of him was that of a model with a charming aura. Katherine sat and glanced around. 'Sir your office is outstanding by all standard and I am so overwhelmed that I can't just help but say it.' Was he hearing right or was he fantasizing, the cleaner in front of him had spoken when his sister would describe as Queens English. He was expecting vanacular like others he had spoken to and she was bold! He was determined to listen carefully to ensure what he was hearing was not a figment of his imagination. 'That is a powerful one liner compliment, thank you.' You are welcome or it was pleasure didn't seem like a good reply so she just nodded. Kelvin smiled, that infectious kind of smile. 'We just did what is called expression, based on that, I will like you to tell me what is going on between you and Mr sunday? ' 'There is nothing between us. There was no tete a tete until Monday when he summoned me into his office. ' Katherine answered and paused for her purpose. 'I will appreciate it if you give me details. 'Kelvin urged wanting to know more about the members of his staff. 'That was the encouragement she needed. 'He initiated pleasantries between us which is rare. Later he wooed me with tasty offers. ' A brow of his was raised and a smile more of inquisition graced his face. 'Come on be a good narrator and give me specifics. ' He sat back. Katherine smiled understanding his expression. She shouldn't be talking much in his presence not that she was a talker but there something homely and encouraging about him. 'He said we are going to spend a night in the hotel, steady flow of money and a car...' She went ahead to narrate everything to him. He had listened attentively and thoughtfully. 'Do you believe the offers he made? ' 'I don't. ' 'Why not? He is capable of providing them. ' It was not business yet he couldn't help but satisfy his curiosity. 'I asked him if all the cleaners had to go through that. He said some of them, invariably, this company should have had a car park extension now .' Kelvin laughed. 'I also thought to myself, if he could stoop to some of the cleaners, that means, he must have done same to some of the secretaries. ' She shrugged .'That is my thought anyway. ' 'Hmmmm....' He nodded slowly. A talk with much wisdom coming from someone younger than him but he had learnt over time that it was more blessed to listen irregardless of the person social status. 'I hope I did not talk much. ' She looked at him rather shyly. 'Of course not, I did the asking remember. ' He replied and placed a palm under his chin. She continued heartily. 'I believe in the institution marriage, I believe in the Governor and in the spirit surrounding it. I also believe violators have justice meted to them.' 'True.' He pursed his lips thoughtfully. 'I hope you're alright. ' 'A bit shaken but fine.'She smiled. 'Thank you sir for saving me.' She stood. 'I believe you would have pulled through without my aid.' Kelvin said at an afterthought. Katherine beamed. 'Do excuse my exit.' He nodded and watched her leave. Then he closed his eyes. ''wasn't she remarkable?" He allowed his seat rock as he tried to remember the passage of the Scripture to back her claim. "Marriage is honorable in all and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. " He quoted aloud. ''She is good... Damn!' His eyes fluttered open. He hadn't even ask her name! +++ 2 Likes |

NOW THAT SHE had seen inside, she couldn't resist the urge to view the magnificent building for the umptheeth time from outside . Indeed it looked more welcoming than ever. Now she knew the quality grew from floor to floor. It was nothing near what any nollywood had featured. Somehow she glanced up at the sky and find it necessary to thank God for the wisdom he had placed in man. Then, she smiled as she remembered the meeting with him. Who would have thought she would be privileged to chat with the boss, even made him laugh. Some cleaners who had worked three years had not been within metres of his presence. Katherine clutched her handbag and walked the distance to where she would board a bus home. +++ *-* Basirat Yekini Adam was seated beside her brother and her body rocked in silent prayers as both eyes were shut. She was the second daughter of Moshood. Yerima had his head buried in his palms. Kafayat Yekini, the last child of the family sat beside her mother with head resting on her shoulder, while her palm clinged to a mother's hand, partly comforting her. She stared blankly as tears flowed silently down her oblong pretty face. The memory of Prince burial kept flashing in her mind. It was four days after Moshood was admitted and only the day before, they had been allowed to see him. The sight they had met had made them shocked and the hope they had clinged to dashed into pieces. How could a strong man who had served the country with the better years of his life become so pale and had to depend on medical equipments and medications for survival and major functions of the body. They had been so engrossed in their individual thoughts that had neither heard nor see the doctors approach. 'The Yekinis.' The elderly doctor called softly to draw attention. They all snapped back to reality and stood, their heartbeats quickening. 'Doctor …' Basirat began. 'Calm down Mrs Adam.' He had been their family doctor for close to twenty five years. 'You all saw Moshood yesterday, you saw his condition, hence, I won't select a particular sex for the news.' He glanced at the younger doctor and at their faces. A choking silence prevailed. He allowed his eyes linger on Aisha and she appeared to him like she had lost ten kg within the past days. 'I am sorry, we just lost him. ' He told them solemnly. He had lost a friend too. Kafayat screamed at the top of her voice and was about to throw herself down when her brother gripped her by the upper arms and pinned her against the wall. Aisha shook her head too exhausted to do anything physical. She lowered herself to the floor and wept. Basirat sat beside her mum and held as tears trickled down her face. Eventually Kafayat leaned into her brother's embrace and whispered. 'Why Prince and then daddy? ' 'I don't know baby, I don't know. 'He heaved deeply as his head began to throb. +++ *-* Kelvin left the comfort of the cushion in the sitting wing of his office for the glass window which gave him a view of the artificial spring in the premises. He thought of her, he hated it that he had to use pronoun to refer to her instead of her name, a name he should have asked of. He didn't blame Patrick for trying to woo her for there was something remarkable about her, but he blame him for him for his unfaithfulness and overstepping his boundary. How dare he try to molest her in his company! To him his act was a serious offense but he had decided to skip confronting him. Taking a cue from what his mother used to tell him and sisters back then when they were younger. "Pray dearie pray, that the spirit that possess you to do that will not possess you because then, your crime today might be visited then." Kelvin smiled. To the lady, so principled and intelligently spoken, he couldn't see the part of the cleaner anywhere her no matter how hard he tried. He narrowed his brows and subconsciously touched a leaf of a potted plant at the window. She doesn't appear like one, didn't speak like one neither did she act like one. And she is so young ! He frowned, he would probably be seven or eight years older than she was. Making her age mates with his yougest sister who was doing so well for herself. Why a cleaner? Why …? He sighed. He knew then he wanted to see her again. He tapped his index finger on his lips. What was he going to say was his reason and how was she going to feel when she hears she was summoned once more, someone who had escaped molestation. How was going to start explaining to his secretary who he wanted to see. Would she answer all my questions? He pondered. Was she now emotional stable? Was she better now? He turned away from the window and touched forehead. How could he be so worried about her? Was he alright? He sighed before returning to the work on his desk. +++ *-* The bus sped along the newly constructed road. She glanced at the older lady beside who was engrossed with her mobile phone with fixed nails painted red and then the window of the hiace bus. She thought of the incident of a few days ago. What an embarrassing way to meet someone who was highly placed, someone she heard so much about but hadn't been fortunate to meet until that fateful day. She wasn't embarrassed that he was her Savior, she was surprised. Then she smiled, now she could fathom the reason why most women, married and single were slashing themselves to get a glimpse of his attention and they dressed provocatively as much as they could within their various dress code. He was tall, handsome with blue eyes, intelligent and accomodating, for she had sensed that in his presence . It was not all the DGs that would want a cleaner in their office talk more of dialogue. He was young for his post but she was sure he was good at it. She had heard a member of staff suggesting to her colleague that he might be gay that was probably why he paid no attention to them. To her, it was impressive that he could ignore them but she, Katherine was immune to all those feminine flutterings. She closed her eyes briefly as the breeze from outside caressed her face shutting her mind blank. The shadow boy began calling bus stops. +++ *-* It was barely nine am when the secretary called requesting her to report herself to the office. Katherine entered the office bracing up for the worst. The secretary was filing her fingers. 'You sent for me.' Katherine said looking at her, the lady never ceased to amaze her. 'You.' She looked at her, shoulders raised. 'I just don't know what you think you're. ' She hissed and took a letter that was already enveloped from her table. 'The AD asked me to give this to you.' She looked away. 'Let me have it.' A voice said firmly. Katherine hand dropped instantly. The secretary jumped to her feet. Not again! Her mind screamed when she turned. A frown etched her face, he had no right over her letter. He covered the distance and stood across her. The secretary hurriedly left her table to hand over the letter praying he had not been standing there for long. Katherine recovered and wondered at the secretary uneasiness . She pursed her lips still waiting for the worst. Kelvin didn't look at her. When he sighted her and heard what the secretary said, he was compelled to do what he did. He unsealed the envelope and read, was he surprised? Not at all. The silence was just too much that she wished for once she could read minds. 'Yemisi. ' He handed over the letter. 'Yes Sir.' She collected it trembling. 'Have this letter retyped but this time address it Patrick, I am waiting to sign it.' Yemisi blanched but recovered quickly. 'But Sir …' Kelvin face had a grimace. 'Are you question... ' 'Not at all Sir …not at all.' She made to kneel slightly before rounding her desk. He sat, crossed his legs, took in the office before he picked one of the magazine meant for visitors . 'Sit. ' It was then he glanced at her. Katherine didn't trust the atmosphere, neither did she trust his invitation. She shook her head. Kelvin didn't say more as he focused on the secretary. It was so easy to see her discomfort. He had heard her comment earlier, she was impolite and probably had something going with her boss. 'I am through Sir.' Yemisi was on her feet. Kelvin stood, removed a pen from the inner pocket of his suit and tampered his signature. 'Have this letter photocopied and handed to the admin director and the other handed to the recipient without explanation. I repeat without any explanation. Do you understand Yemisi? ' 'Yes Sir.' She affirmed against her wish. 'He knows the normal protocol if he has any objection. I am giving you ten minutes to be done and get back to Precious. ' 'Yes Sir.' She set to work. 'Come with me.' He told her and head to his private elevator. Katherine had no other option but to follow him but not without a final glance at the secretary who looked like she might burst into tears any minute. +++ *-* Katherine took seat at his gesture. Kelvin smiled. The long anticipated opportunity had come and he wasn't going to repeat his mistake. 'What is your name? ' It was with great effort she didn't glare at him. How could he be asking of her name when her fate was decided right before her yet she remained in the dark. 'You told me the last time we spoke that you don't like suspense, then how come you enjoy doing that.' Her voice was calm. She was past fear of expressing herself. Such nerves but he love it! 'Will you please tell me your name first? ' He requested with retained smile. She exhaled and waited. 'My name is my name, I have a choice to decide whom I tell it to.' She met his gaze. Kelvin shook his head with amusement mixed with bewilderment . 'Not even promising, my God! ' Such nerves! Almost every girl he met was always willing to introduce herself without being led on and the others he asked gave it to him without hesitation. One of the phones on the table rang , Kelvin pressed the receive button. 'Sir, Yemisi is here to see you.' 'Let her in.' 'Yes sir. ' He glanced at his wristwatch and took a mental note. 'Come in.' He said at the knock on the door. 'I have done as you've asked me to Sir. ' He nodded. 'Excuse my leaving.' She turned to leave. He waited till her hand was on the door knob. 'Yemisi.' She turned to look at him. 'Yes Sir.' 'You were a couple of minutes late. I have been getting complains about you, about you being rude and I witnessed an episode not too long ago . Be very careful. ' His voice was so calm, it could be likened to a whisper.but the message was clear as she flinched . Katherine looked up and could have smiled. 'I will Sir, Thank you. ' She left. Kelvin handed her the letter. She looked at him. 'Go ahead. ' He focused on her face hoping to read her facial reaction. Katherine read the letter from beginning to the end. 'Was it necessary to return fire to fire on my behalf? ' She concentrated on folding back the letter. 'Not on your behalf, I would have done same for any member of staff in your shoes. Patrick failed me and …' The phone rang. 'Sir, sorry to interrupt but the Account Director is here to see you.' 'I forbid what you just did Precious. He should wait 'cause am busy.' 'I am very sorry Sir.' 'That's alright. ' He looked at her. 'I was beginning to think you're stalking me. Thank you saving me once more but how come?' She lowered her gaze. 'Do forgive me for asking but I need to know. ' He nodded. 'Sometimes I feel obliged to know what is happening in the company, what my staff do in my absence, so I breeze about unannounced.' 'Same for today and the other day? ' 'Yes.' He wondered what was going through her mind. She was overwhelmed, God was there for: her. 'Emmm …what do I say? ' She was tongue tied lacking words to express her gratitude. 'Say your name. ' He stated simply. 'My name …my name …' She put up the act playfully. 'Please …' He drawled. 'Katherine Sylvester. ' She told him. Katherine Sylvester. ' He almost sang. 'What a coincidence! ' We share first letters of our names. ' He beamed. 'Do you want to know my name? ' 'Who wouldn't want to know the name of his or her saviour. ' She answered tactically. 'Kelvin Sigismund. ' 'How nice, the K and S.' Katherine looked at him 'Thank you very much for everything. God bless you Sir.' She stood. 'My Pastor said that is the best prayers one can get from one's fellow human. God bless you too.' He rounded the desk and saw her off to the door. 'I want to talk to you more but Patrick is waiting. ' Katherine nodded. 'I hope you will obliged me when I send for you.' He glanced at her face. 'Like I have a choice. ' She chirped with a beam. 'Oh Thanks, Katherine. ' He chuckled. She walked out and the secretary office where the Patrick was waiting. 'Thanks Precious. ' She acknowledged the secretary and greeted the director . He sprang to his feet. 'I will deal with you in such a way you will curse the day you set foot into his company!' Precious went wide eyed. Katherine kept walking ignoring him. He wasn't going to Let her get away easily. He quickened his steps and pulled her arm with a force that she swirl almost loosing balance. 'You a mere cleaner challenging me, Oh …I swear, you will cry blood. ' She met his gaze but said nothing aware of his nail digging into her skin. 'You good for nothing …!' 'I beg your pardon Sir! ' Precious interrupted sharply. He raised a hand to slap her. She was quick to see him as she pushed him. 'Don't you dare, don't dare place your filthy hands on me, you shameless man! ' He held her on both arms and shook her. Katherine shook herself free with such a force that surprised Patrick and slapped him. 'What! ' He flinched as he held his cheek. 'What is what ehen …is it by force? What is the meaning of this toothless bull display. Do your worst already. ' She met his gaze. 'What? Are you challenging me?' 'What is what? ' Kelvin demanded stepping into the office. 'Patrick you're incorrigible! How dare you lay your hands on her after molesting her!' Patrick almost slumped in shock. Precious was shocked for he had never seen him so annoyed and more because of the revelation. She left for the elevator. 'Right now, I don't feel like hearing you out, you just proved that you're not man enough. You better come along before I change my mind. ' He left for his office. Patrick followed after Precious had sized him up with her eyes. 'Put a call to Katherine, make sure she speaks to you, confirm that she is okay. ' He said to his secretary via phone. 'Okay Sir. ' She replied with a smile because it was as if he just read her mind. +++ 1 Like |
