How about the freshers are you telling me that we are on our own. the huge amount we paid must as well be slashed and if not by paying us back at least we can be assured of making up with the blance against next section.

Part of good development in Nigeria. Politically motivated?
Re: OAU Slashes Tuition by toluxe0075: 7:53am On Aug 22, 2014
If deducting just #3000 of the exorbitant fee and leaving the freshers exorbitant fee untouched is what tribune call slashing, then I hereby place the credibility of tribune journalism under scrutiny. The school management out of their wickedness left freshers fee of over #70000 (depending on faculty) untouched, then just to gain sympathy from the entire world decided to reduce #3000 from the various faculty, as if that's not enough they decided to place our sug executives and other intellectual fighters under probation, dictatorship of the highest order. Nonsense, as for tribune you better return the money you collected from omole and his cohort.

bushdoc9919: They have slashed the fees.....but the problem is that the fees will soon shoot up again.

Make no mistake.....Nigerian universities need funding for improved and expanded facilities. And unless the Government is ready to pay extra money for the University system.....fees are going to go up.

We have to make a choice......do we want half baked graduates or properly prepared graduates.? The current system is not conducive to the production of good graduates.

Listen Up bro, what do you have to say about countries that provide affordable or better still free Education for their children

So it's only those who could afford to pay 150k in secondary school as fees that should be educated?

What about those who STRUGGLED to pay 10k or less in second school, don't they deserve to further their education too?

Politicians can syphon our public fund, collect bribery and practise corruption just to get money while the govt cannot properly fund the education of her future leaders.shld we just sit and look at them?

Mtcheew!!.some people just support the govt cos of the stats(they put forth) without thinking the less-privileded.

#Even our presido was shoeless,if education was not affordable bk then, how would he have become who he is now, huh?

It is extremely difficult to do such without compromising standards.

The basic problem with your argument is that it is flawed.

Countries that can afford free university education are either

1.Countries where the citizens pay heavy income taxes....like Germany

2.Countries that have seriously diversified economies....like Finland.(and Finland has 5million people and a per capita income that is 20 times that of Nigeria.

3.Countries that produce oil....and have populations less than 20 million....like Saudi Arabia and UAE(UAE has 8million....and produces slightly more than Nigeria....which has 160Million people).

4.Countries that attract lots of foreign students....who pay to subsidise the locals.

If you read the article I linked....you would have come across this gem...

Will this make less people able to afford tertiary education? Possibly. But the consolation that goes with it is that those who do go to school will be receiving quality education, which they can apply to create opportunities in our economy. The target for education should be more about quality than quantity. As much as it is important that everyone who desires to attend a tertiary education does, it is even more important that those who do presently get the best possible. If we have to make a compromise between the two, we should sacrifice quantity of graduates for the quality of the graduates. But we should also improve the quality of public basic education that one does not have to have tertiary education in order make it in our country. We should make the system so good that we can have our own Richard Bransons, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who all have gone on to be world-changers despite not having university degrees, but public basic education in their countries.

I believe that reducing the subsidy levels on tertiary education will free up more money for governments to invest in basic education, especially states and local governments. Public basic education systems should be given the highest priority possible. This is because it is the only vehicle that can deliver education en masse. The norm should be that everyone should be comfortable going to public primary and secondary schools, and private schools to be only for the upper class. The federal government should set the overall policy for education but leave it for the states and local governments to implement it. They should provide funding for implementation of specific policies, such as increased science education and so on as the policy states.

The thing is....if we do not increase fees.....our universities will soon no longer have the means toproduce graduates who have to compete in a globalised world. Already.....companies are hiring Nigerians who trained abroad....instead of Nigerian unviersity graduates....because most Nigerian university graduates donot have the skills the companies need.(unless said grad went toget a foreign masters degree)

the fact that you could afford to pay that much in ur sec days doesn't mean WE ALL can.

Av u ever thought of the reason why public schools exist?
Av u ever thought of the reason why people go to public schools despite the condition this schools are?
Av u ever thought of the reason why fed unis were founded and funded by fed govt in the first place?
Av u ever thought of the reason why people prefer to stay at home for like 3 to 4 yrs just to gain admission into these unis?

#abeg, don't even contest as a presidential candidate in the future cos I wouldn't waste my vote on you(it's apparent,u don't care abt d poor masses)

Diversification of the economy starts with us getting off the oil, improving power generation to at LEAST 50000MW, improving transport infrastructure...especially railways, ports, and roads, and getting Ajaokuta complete.

Unitl then.....fees increase remains a possibility...no a necessity..... as long as we are oil dependent.

As for money.....we are not a rich nation. We produce 2.4million barrels of oil per day....less than the UAE'S 3million....and for a population of 160 MILLION,COMPARED to the UAE's 8MILLION.
