SHORTCUT TECHNIQUES IN SOLVING DRAGNET/SHL NUMERICAL REASONING TEST

Almost everyone has failed one or two aptitude tests. Some are yet to pass any aptitude test at all.

NB: When solving some Numerical reasoning test, sometimes the answer you get wont b in the option. This is specifically made to make you lose confidence, so don’t panic at all. Choose the option that closely matches what you get as your answer.

We will unravel using the Normal method or Shortcut method.

NORMAL METHOD

To solve, just add every figures in the bar chart together:

Segment 1: 10 + 12 + 14+ 15 = 51
Segment 2: 22 + 24 + 30 + 32 =108
Segment 3: 15 + 16 +17 + 17 = 65
Segment 4: 5 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 23
Add together: 51 + 108 + 65 + 23 = 247

SHORTCUT METHOD
Here, we apply the Arithmetic Progression (AP) Formula:
((First Value (2009) + Last value (2012)) * Number of Segments) / 2
Therefore, ((10 + 15) + (22 +32) + (15 + 17) + (5 + 7)) * 4) / 2 = 246
From the option, the closest answer is 245 million which the answer is.



INFERENCE
The problem of the Normal Method here is that you are more prone to mistake when a very large data is needed to be calculated and also can be time-consuming. Remember that Dragnet and some SHL test (Mobil test for Postgraduate holders) prohibit calculator. It is advisable to master this shortcut technique so u will not only be quick but also for precision and accuracy sake.

N ORMAL METHOD

Total Value of China holding: 210m * 10% = 21m
11% of China holding: 21m * 11% = 2.31m
Total existing value of India holding is : 210m * 9% = 18.9m
Total new value of India holding is 18.9m + 2.31m = 21.21m
The proportion that India will represent is:
21.21m/210m * 100 = 10.1%

SHORTCUT METHOD

There is actually no need for u to utilize the actual value fund when calculating. Simply multiply 10% China holding by 11% which was moved to India and then add the result to the 9% India holding. Afterwards take the percentage.

(10/100 * 11/100) + 9/100) * 100
(0.011 + 0.09) * 100 = 0.101 * 100 = 10.1%

INFERENCE

How simple numerical reasoning test is if u can master the shortcut technique. Think about the time and stress you would have saved in solving this.

NORMAL METHOD

Here just sum up the total number of sales then multiply with Production Cost per item.

Lingerie: 5.21 * (6258 + 5987 + 7548 +6794 + 9874) = 189961.81

Jeans: 12.58* (1354 + 4512 + 7894 + 2365 + 6589) = 285742.12

Formal Suits: 32.42 * (4785 + 6587 + 3564 + 1247 + 5897) = 715833.6

Cardigans: 29.83 * (3254 + 1254 + 7894 + 5658 + 5655) = 707418.45

Shoes: 25.75 * ( 7854 + 5648 + 8999 + 7844 + 6542) = 949840.25

Answer is Shoes, the biggest production cost.

SHORTCUT METHOD

When solving a problem like this, approximate the first digit to the nearest single number. Don’t take into consideration of the whole. So, you are going to work it out like this:

Lingerie: 5 * (6 + 6 + 8 +7 + 9) = 180
Jeans: 13* (1 + 5 +8 + 2 + 6) = 286
Formal Suits: 32 * (5 + 6 + 4 + 1 + 6) = 704
Cardigans: 30 * (3 + 1 + 8 + 6 + 6) = 720
Shoes: 26 * ( 8 + 6 + 9 + 8 + 7) = 988


Answer is Shoes, the biggest production cost.

INFERENCE

Can one really get to the bottom of this question using the Normal method? I don’t think so in examination condition. You are going to spend considerable amount of time in solving with Calculator talkless of u solving it manually. Well, this is one of the astounding worth of the Shortcut technique.

Total Unit sales in 2010 is: 9874 + 6589 + 5897 + 5655 + 6542 = 34557

Total Jeans in both 2006 and 2007 is : 1354 + 4512 = 5866

Ratio = Total Jeans/ Total Unit Sales
5866/34557 = 0.169 app 0.17.

Check the options. (17/99) which is 0.171 is the answer

SHORTCUT METHOD

The approach here is the same as the former. Now let’s solve it:

Total Unit sales in 2010 is: 9 + 7 + 6 + 6 + 7 = 35

Total Jeans in both 2006 and 2007 is: 1 + 5 = 6
Ratio = Total Jeans/ Total Unit Sales
6/35= 0.171.

Check the options. (17/99) which is 0.171 is the answer
