Egypt’s U-23 semi-final qualification scenarios
By Salma Abdallah Follow @Salmabdallah

Photo: EFA official website

Despite drawing against Algeriaand Nigeriain the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, the Young Pharaohs still have chances of qualifying for the tournament’s semi-finals.

Egyptsit in the third place of Group B, with two points from a possible six. They were held to a 1-1 drawin their opening match against Algeria, before clinching a 2-2 draw against the Dream Team of Nigeria. The Pharaohs are two points behind Algeria and Nigeria, while Mali lie at the bottom of the group with no points.

The top two teams of each group qualify to the competition’s semi-final stage, while the top three teams of the tournament have their spots booked in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics.

The Egyptians are scheduled to face Mali, who have officially lost all their chances of advancing in the tournament, in the third match of the group stage on Saturday. Mali failed to collect any points from their matches against Nigeria and Algeria, losing 3-2 and 2-0, respectively.

Algeria – 4 points
Nigeria – 4 points
Egypt – 2 points
Mali – 0 points

A draw or loss against Mali will be the end of the road for Egypt. To keep their hopes of advancing to the next round, the Pharaohs need to beat Mali for their tally to reach five points. However, winning Mali’s game might not secure Egypt a spot in the semi-finals, as the Egyptians’ fate isn’t entirely in their hands; they will have to wait for the match result of their competitors, Nigeria and Algeria.

Nigeria will be facing Algeria in their third group match on Saturday at 19:00 CLT (17:00 GMT), the same time of Egypt’s match against Mali.

Note: The following scenarios are all assuming a win against Mali.

Scenario 1 – Nigeria win, Egypt qualify:
If Nigeria won their match against Algeria, the Egyptian team will then claim the second spot in the group and a place in the semi-finals alongside group leaders Nigeria.

Scenario 2 – Algeria win, Egypt qualify:
If Algeria defeated Nigeria, the Egyptians will qualify in the second place as well, while Algeria will be on top of the group.

Algeria and Nigeria match ends in a draw:
However, if Saturday’s match between Algeria and Nigeria ended in a draw, the three teams (Egypt, Algeria and Nigeria) will be tied on 5 points, pushing the group into tiebreaker rules.

According to the competition’s rules, the match results with the bottom team of the group – Mali in this case – should be excluded.

The rankings should then be determined by the greatest number of points obtained in all group matches between the teams involved. As the three teams will still be tied at two points and the goal difference will be the same, the greatest number of goals scored rule would apply.

Scenario 3 – Egypt qualify top of the group
If Algeria and Nigeria match ends in a goalless draw, Egypt will qualify on the top of the group, as they will have scored three goals from a 1-1 draw with Algeria and a 2-2 with Nigeria. Nigeria will then come in the second place as they drew 2-2 with Egypt and 0-0 with Algeria.

Scenario 4 – Egypt and Nigeria qualify
If Nigeria and Algeria match ends in 1-1 draw, Egypt and Nigeria will then book their spots in the next round, with each of them scoring three goals, while Algeria will sit in the third place.

Scenario 5 – Nigeria qualify, Mali acts as tiebreaker
If Nigeria and Algeria draw 2-2, Nigeria will then be on top of the group with four goals scored against Algeria and Egypt.

Egypt and Algeria will then have the same number of goals; three goals from 1-1 and 2-2 draws, so their results against Mali will be the tiebreaker.

Algeria defeated Mali 2-0, so if Egypt won 1-0 against Mali, Algeria will advance. Egypt, however, will win the second qualifying spot if they defeated Mali with a three-goal difference.

Egypt will also book a direct spot in the next round, if they defeated Mali with a two-goal margin while scoring more goals than Algeria.

So, if Egypt beat Mali 3-1, they will have scored six goals in total, while Algeria’s tally will stand at five goals.

However, if Egypt defeated Mali 2-0, which is the same result of Algeria against Mali, then a drawing of lots conducted by the Organizing Committee will take place between the two Arab teams to decide on who will claim the second qualifying spot.

A 3-3 draw between Algeria and Nigeria will put Egypt outside the competition. Nigeria will then qualify on the top of the group with five goals scored from 3-3 and 2-2 draws, while Algeria will come second with four goals, after 3-3 and 1-1 draws.

Amuneke: U-23 Eagles Have Themselves To Blame For Tight Situation

By Sab Osuji:
Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has admitted that Saturday's final Group Africa U-23 Cup of Nations match between Nigeria and Algeria will be difficult but he is praying for Samson Sisia's charges to prevail over their North African foes after the Nigerians made things difficult for themselves.

Amuneke who guided the Golden Eaglets to lift last month's FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile told Comple tesportsnigeria.com on Friday that the U-23 Eagles must have to manage their game very well against Algeria.

"It is very sad that we found ourselves in this position," Amuneke said.

"In two previous games we threw away our comfortable leads and now have to fight hard for survival in the last game.

"If we had held on well and won those two games, this game with Algeria would have been an inconsiquential one.

"It all has to do with game management. You score and try to hold onto it, I mean protect your lead.

"Of course, Algeria will be difficult enemies. They too want to qualify.

"They are already on four points with us and a draw and a likely Egypt win over Mali will see the three teams finish with five points and this will drag us into the hed-to-head mathematics for qualification."

A draw with Algeria with Algeria will be enough to see Nigeria through.

The former Super Eagles and FC Barcelona winger however forsees victory for the Nigerian squad.

"Yes, I see Nigeria winning the game by whatever margin," Amuneke added to Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

"From the result of their two previous games, it shows they are an attacking minded team.

"They must have worked on the mistakes that saw them concede goals especially in the second half so I believe any goal they score from this game with Algeria would be very decisive."

South Africa joined hosts Senegal in the semi-finals of the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win Tunisia on Friday.

The win gave South Africa Grpup B’s second ticket after Senegal, who qualified after winning their first two games.

South Africa finished with six points with Menzi Mazuku scoring the only goal in the 85th minute in Mbour to send Tunisia packing.

Senegal sealed their 100 per cent record with a 1-0 win over Zambia in Dakar also on Friday.

Mouhahamadou Diallo headed home the only goal of the match in the fourth minute to send Zambia home without any points.

The group stage of the 2015 Caf Africa Cup of Nations will climax on Friday when Group B gladiators Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria slug it out for a place in the semifinal, with Mali, the other team in the group already out of the competition.

Nigeria’s Under-23 team, the ‘Dream Team will play Algeria’s Les Fennecs while Egypt will tackle Mali with nothing but pride at stake for Les Aiglonettes.

Coach Samson Siasia and his charges will make the 80 kilometre trip from M’Bour to Dakar for their date with Algeria at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor , Dakar with their sights on a win against Algeria.

Nigeria have had a rather strange tournament which had culminated in the team conceding four goals, and in dire manner too.

Leading three goals up by half time, the Dream Team[BELOW]capitulated and nearly allowed Mali get a point from the game.

Cue the next game and lightning struck twice. Nigeria led Egypt 2-0 at half time in the next group game and just like the first, the Young Pharaohs clawed their way back to tie the game and were unlucky not to pick all the three points.

Samson Siasia knows he has to sort out his team if they will have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals of the competition.

Nigeria will have to avoid a defeat against Algeria to assure passage into the next round while hoping Mali can get a result against Egypt to clam frayed nerves.

Algeria drew 1-1 with Egypt in the first group game and followed it up with a 2-0 win over Mali to go top of the group.

Nigeria started like a house on fire in her first group game hitting Mali for three in the first half but nearly threw that away as Mali fought back to score twice in the second half.

Egypt[BELOW]also had to come from a two goal deficit to snatch a point against Nigeria which has put them in a good stead to be in contention for a spot in the semifinals.

With Mali out of contention, the trio of Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria will go all out for the available two slots from Group B.

Whoever picks the top spot in Group B will meet South Africa who are second in Group A while thee runner up will meet hosts Senegal in the semifinal.
Both games will be played simultaneously.

Nigeria 2 Egypt 2
Algeria 1 Egypt 1
Mali 0 Algeria 2

Players to watch
Algeria : Zinedine Ferhat- The Algerian striker is the live-wire of Les Fennecs attack as he has already accounted for a goal and an assist in the competition.

The USM Alger player is a tricky attacker who can also play from the wings. He is fast on the ball and has great technical ability.

Nigeria: Azubuike Okechukwu - The lynch-pin in Nigeria’s midfield who acts a conductor for Samson Siasia’s orchestra.

The diminutive midfielder who plays for Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor brings a lot of creativity to the Nigerian midfield and will again be relied upon to provide the ammunition for the likes of Junior Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi to thrive on.........................

Siasia banks on Dakar's grass
by Sammy Wejinya

Samson Siasia

Samson Siasia believes playing in Dakar against Algeria in Saturday’s decisive 2015 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations game will see his side play better.

The Nigeria head coach was speaking against the backdrop of two unconvincing performances against Mali and Egypt at Stade Caroline Faye in M’Bour.

Saturday’s game against the Algerians will be played at Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar, and Siasia believes the difference in playing surfaces at both stadia could prove to be a decisive factor.

“We have played our first two games against Mali and Egypt on an artificial surface (at the Stade Caroline Faye, M'Bour) and now we will play (our next game against Algeria) on grass (at Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar).

“It’s easier to play on grass than the artificial surfaces because the ball moves faster and bounces higher and that will give us a lot of confidence,” Siasia said.

He was however quick to add that Nigeria’s less-than-appealing displays against Mali and Egypt had nothing to do with the surface in M’Bour.

“We have managed to secure four points from our first two games and I think we have to play better against Algeria on Saturday.

“We need to defend well in the second half against Algeria because we have shown in our first two games that we don’t know how to defend in the second halves of matches.

“That is something we need to sort out quickly,” he said.
Saturday’s game is live on SuperSport 9 with build-up from 7:45pm CAT.

Egypt’s U-23 semi-final qualification scenarios

SENEGAL 2015: DREAM TEAM CONDEMNED TO WIN AGAINST ALGERIA

BY JOE APU
The battle to inch closer to the Rio 2016 tickets in Group B could go to any of the three top sides today as Algeria who eliminated Mali faces Nigeria’s Dream Team and Egypt take on no hopers Mali in the last group game.

With both matches fixed for the same time, the Nigerian side led by Coach Samson Siasia will have to rise above their lack luster performances in the last two games against Mali and Egypt if they intend to go be in the semi finals.

Never-say-die Egypt kept alive their hopes of booking a place at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro when they came from two goals down to earn an exciting 2-2 draw with Nigeria in their second Group B clash of the U-23 African Cup of Nations on Wednesday.

Two highly controversial penalties from Oghenekaro Etebo put Nigeria 2-0 up inside the first half of an hour in Senegalese city Mbour but Egypt roared back in seven second-half minutes, thanks to goals from Ramadan Sobhi and substitute Karim Mamdouh.

Egypt, who are aiming to finish as one of the top three in the Nations Cup to qualify for the Olympic Games for the second straight time, having reached the quarter finals at the 2012 London Games, have yet to bag any win but they still have a good chance to advance to the Nations Cup semis.

They are third in their group with two points from two draws, two behind leading duo Nigeria and Algeria, who meet each other in the last game while Egypt face already-eliminated Mali.

A win for Egypt coupled with a victory for Algeria or Nigeria will see them through. Should Egypt defeat Mali and Algeria draw with Nigeria, the three will be equal on five points.

Nigeria had the better possession in the opening exchanges, with Egypt unable to move the ball around smoothly despite the presence of some talented attacking midfielders including Sobhi and Karim Walid, who had little service from two sluggish central midfielders

The first soft penalty was awarded on 19 minutes when Cameroonian referee Antoine Essouma adjudged Egypt’s defensive midfielder Rami Rabia to have handled a cross but television replays showed that the ball had struck his knee.

Egypt goalkeeper Mosaad Awad dived the right way but could not block Etebo’s effort into the bottom corner as Nigeria took the lead.

The Pharaohs conceded again from another dubious penalty after half an hour when a Nigerian pass deflected off a defender and looped to the flailing arm of full-back Mohamed Hani. Etebo sent Awad the wrong way to double Nigeria’s lead and leave Egypt with a mountain to climb.

Egypt came on with all guns blazing in the second half, narrowing the gap just two minutes after the restart with a firm header from Ahly playmaker Sobhi after a neat left-wing cross from Mohamed Hamdi.

Five minutes later, substitute Mamdouh, who replaced ineffective lone striker Hussein Ragab, leveled the score with a fortuitous goal when his weak effort from a tight angle hit a defender to wrong-foot the keeper.

Both sides created several goal-scoring opportunities in an end-to-end second period but were let down by some poor finishing.

Acres of space in Nigeria’s defence were exploited by four marauding attacking midfielders, with Egypt going the closest to scoring a decisive goal on 72 minutes when substitute Mostafa Fathi made a darting run towards the area but he missed a sitter when his angled shot went just wide from eight yards out.

Nigeria were also unlucky not to score as both sides shared spoils to throw the group race wide open ahead of the final round of matches.

Zambia aiming to exit with dignity

Benson Salala of Zambia and Keagan Dolly of South Africa during the U 23 African Cup of Nations

Despite losing two of their of their 2015 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations matches, Zambia will hope to at least exit with dignity and beat hosts Senegal on Friday.

Fighton Simukonda’s side lost 2-1 to Tunisia and 3-2 to South Africa with their upcoming match against the Lions presenting an opportunity for them to bag a win.

Chipolopolo did everything they could to redeem themselves against their Southern African rivals, but they couldn’t finish the job and Simukonda will hope to see the likes of Conlyde Luchanga and Billy Mutale, who scored on Tuesday, to be on target once again on Friday.

Chipolopolo are placed at the bottom of Group A with zero pints having lost twice.

Looking at the hosts, they top the group with six points from their two consecutive wins.

Speaking after the match, the Zambian coach said they’re disappointed with the loss but will have to fight for a win against Serigne Saliou Dia’s side.

“In my team everyone is disappointed because we played so well in the first half,” said Simukonda.

“We thought in the second half we were going to finish them, but unfortunately things came down, we slept and were punished.

“We came here to at least reach the semifinals ,but unfortunately luck is not with us but against Senegal we are not taking things lightly because we have to win.”

On the other hand, the hosts have already qualified for the semifinals and will look to make it three wins in a row.

After their 2-0 win over Tunisia on Tuesday, the coach expressed happiness and hailed his players as well as the supporters, however, he said some of his players are tired.

“We need to congratulate the fans who came in numbers to support us, as well as the players who gave everything to win this game,” said Saliou Dia.

“We managed to unsettle our opponents, who come from a great football nation.
“Some of our players are tired, but we can rely on an interchangeable squad.”

Although Zambia’s dream of making it to the Olympics next year in Brazil is shattered, the Lions coach may be tempted to rest some of his key players and prepare for the knockout stages to keep their Rio de Janeiro dream alive.

The match will be staged at 17:00 and the venue is the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar.

Nigeria face tough test against Algeria

Nigeria U23 striker Junior Ajayi

Nigeria take on leaders Algeria in a final U23 AFCON Group B match on Saturday in Dakar knowing that they cannot afford to lose the game if they are to stay on course for qualification to next year’s Rio Olympics.

Both Nigeria and Algeria are on four points each after two rounds of matches with Egypt on two points still in with a chance if they won their final game against Mali, who have already been eliminated from the championship.

Victory over the North Africans on Saturday will guarantee Nigeria passage to the last four, while a draw could also be enough, but that would depend on the result between Egypt and Mali.

Incidentally, both Nigeria and Algeria also clashed in a final group game four years ago in the same competition in Morocco.

Nigeria won 4-1, but it was not enough to get them through to the knockout rounds because they had already lost their two other group games.

Before this competition, the biggest undoing for coach Samson Siasia’s team was that they were not scoring goals despite the many chances they create.

However, their performance in Senegal has been baffling particularly going by their collapse in the second half against both Mali and Egypt.

“It has been very confusing and worrisome. Before now the problem was scoring goals, but now it is defending the goals you have scored,” admitted team spokesman Timi Ebikagbaro.

“But whatever be the case, the boys know we have to get a result against Algeria not minding the outcome of the match.”

The Nigeria defence has remained shaky despite the dropping of Kano Pillars ace Zaharadeen Bello for the more experienced Chizoba Amaefule, who scored an own goal against Egypt on Wednesday.

Siasia may need to draft a more defensive player in the midfield, where Oghenekaro Etebo, skipper Azubuike Okechukwu and Usman Mohammed are all attack-minded.

Swiss coach Pierre-Andre Schurmann has assembled a very tactically sound team with the lively Zinedine Ferhat the team’s standout star with two goals.

They will not make it easy for Nigeria.
Kick-off time is 4pm at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar.

Samson Siasia has urged his Nigeria U-23 side to be cautious against Algeria today to ensure they do not lose any further ground in Olympics 2016 qualifying tournament.

The Dream Team have conceded four goals in two games and with four points they are in the mix of qualification and elimination from the 2015 African U23 Championship semi-final in Senegal and must not lose to the Fennec Foxes in their last group game.

Siasia said: “We did not play in the second half and we cannot continue like this, if we want to go to the Olympics.

“We have to be careful. We tend to lose concentration in the second half and have to fix it.

“It was the case in the first game against Mali and the same thing happened against Egypt. It is no longer funny.

“It will be a tough battle against Algeria, and we have to be careful about the North African sides, they attack left and right,” he concluded.

Algeria sit atop Group B with a superior goals difference and will hope to avenge their 4-1 defeat to Nigeria at the 2011 edition when they face the Dream Team VIat the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar.

Psychology key in Nigeria, Algeria tie

Former Golden Eaglets head coach, Alphonsus Dike has said psychology will play a key role in the Dream Team VI clash against the Fennec Foxes of Algeria today.

The Nigerians will confront their North African opponents in the last group make or mar duel at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar.

Both sides are tied on four points after match day 2 clash though the Algerians enjoy a better placement at the summit due to superior goals.

Dike said the players need the whole of reassurance from the coaches to be able to overpower the Algerians.

“We can overcome the Algerians at least we were in the comfort zone in the past two matches to Mali and Egypt before we allowed the opponents a comeback.

“Here we need to ask questions why the players appeared to burn out energies in the second half of the matches to Mali and Egypt.

“We must look at the mental and psychology of the players especially as concerns management of energy and stamina over 90 minutes.

“Football is about two halves so they cannot continue to do well in one half and falter in the second half.

“So the coaches must sound the players out mentally and psychologically to reassure them to believe in themselves.

“They must be told to forget the outcome of the two past matches to Mali and Egypt and concentrate wholly on Algeria.

“Already the players must have been weighed down having to struggle to finish two matches they led comfortably.

“I believe once this pep talk is perfectly done they will be good to go against Algeria to secure the three points and qualify for the semifinals and eventually claim one of the Olympic tickets.

“Of course, Algeria will not come cheap coming from a background of rich football culture, they will not be easy to overpower but the Nigerians can still do it with good composure and calmness,” said the former Enugu Rangers and Nasarawa United coach to supersport.com.

U23 AFCON: Nigeria hit by major injury blow

Nigeria have suffered a major injury blow as the team’s most influential player at the U23 AFCON Stanley Dimgba has been ruled out of tonight’s decisive Group B clash against Algeria.

Nigeria walk tight rope
A loss today could see coach Samson Siasia’s team exit the competition in Senegal.

The nature of Dimgba’s injury is not immediately known, but he will be dearly missed against Algeria as Nigeria are under pressure to get a favourable result to lift them to the last four of the tournament, which also doubles as a qualifier for next year’s Rio Olympics.

Warri Wolves flying winger Dimgba has provided three assists in the first two group games against Mali and Egypt before he was injured.

His place on the left side of attack is now likely to be taken up by Toingoli Tonbara from Bayelsa United.

Nigeria U23 goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel - Will he again let in goals in the second half?

by Samm Audu
Algeria U23 assistant coach and former international star Abdelhafid Tasfaout has described today’s U23 AFCON Group B clash against Nigeria as “a final before the final”.

Algeria are top of the standings with four points from two matches because of a superior goals’ difference over Nigeria.

A draw this evening in Dakar will see them most likely win the group to face South Africa in the semi-final of the tournament, which doubles as qualifier for next year’s Rio Olympics.

“This game is like a final before the final,” declared Tasfaout.
“We have the confidence and the quality to get a result and finish top of our group and we hope to make the most of our chances while making sure we do not let in goals against Nigeria.”

Algeria U23 Swiss coach Pierre-Andre Schurmann said they will focus only on their own performance.

His team though have a couple of injury concerns going into the match in Dakar, which begins 6pm Nigerian time.

Striker Zakarya Haddaouche is ill possibly due to the weather in Senegal, while midfielder Abdelraouf Benguit has a slight knock which prevented him from training.

Incidentally, both teams clashed in another final group game at the inaugural U23 AFCON in Morocco four years ago with Nigeria winning 4-1.

We should be more grateful to Mali, it would have been very easy for them to take a loss and go home but they showed character by playing till the end. Algeria is the best team in this group and we did good enough by keeping a clean sheet against them.

Honestly,i am disappointed with Awoniyi's performance today. He lacks stamina and ball control which make him lose ball in vital situations. I think he should be left alone to develop for now. People are overhyping the lad.

His touches were brilliant , are u sure u watched the match ? The problem of that team lies in d midfield ,if u watch from the beginning of this competition to this stage , they ve been unable to spring 2/3 passes together without making a mistake , and they ve not been able to give beautiful passes to d attack ,Sia one should be blame for this . And the right winger that played yesterday is just another error , He makes Dimgba look like messi . I hope Dimgba comes back from injury before out match against the host . The team will get better .

The lad is jst 18yrs old competing with d U23s. The competition at this level is close to that of d senior national team.I think he is a good player dt needs time to develop. However, expectations are too high on him. He would b a vital asset to our 2017 U20 & then 2020 Olympics if he keeps developing and improving.

I think we are one leg into Rio. Even if we finish 4th, d play-off I think is against a 4th placed team from Asia of which even d current crop of U23 can ease pass. At the last Olympic qualifiers, Senegal finished 4th and qualified via play-off and went farthest amongst d African representative at d London Olympics.

I'm also doing something like this, but the site I registered for is different from urs, I remember doing something like this when I was in ABU zaria 2 yrs ago at the end of the month I requested for my pay check I was asked to click my country from d drop box, lo and behold Nigeria was not among the countries listed, that was how I lost out. Here I am again trying to see if this new site I registered will work out for me, question is, is this ur 1st time doing this? , have u been paid before? This referral business is somehow trickish.
