Two arraigned for ‘robbing God’

Two persons who allegedly robbed God by stealing the church’s box of offering and tithes in Lagos yesterday
appeared before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court.

Peter Adelaja, 27, and Kolawole Olowokere, 31, were arraigned before Mrs. Yeside Ikechukwu on a four-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Gbemileke Agoi, told the court that Adelaja was a guard at the St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, Yaba, where the incident happened. Olowokere is said to be Adelaja’s friend.

Agoi said that Adelaja assisted Olowokere to commit the offence on February. 8, at about 11.30 p.m. at the church premises.

He explained that the second accused got into the church premises with the assistance of Adelaja, while he used a ladder and rope to enter into the hallowed hall of the church.

The prosecutor added that Olowokere remained in the hall all through the night and was detected by Adelaja’s assistant in the early hours, following which he raised the alarm.

Agoi said that Olowokere escaped but his accomplice was arrested and handed over to the police who eventually arrested Olowokere following Adelaja’s interrogation.

They succeeded in stealing the box, but the amount could not be determined.

Olowokere pleaded guilty to the charges, while Adelaja pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety in like sum.

The magistrate ordered both accused to be remanded in police custody pending the next adjournment date on March 23, for judgment and for further hearing.

The offence is punishable under Sections 509 and 515 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003 and if convicted, it attracts a seven-year prison term.
