An estimated 1.4million Catalans filled the streets in a massive show of force for the region’s separatist campaign.

Demonstrators thronged the streets of Barcelona, the region’s capital, waving red and yellow Catalan flags and yelling ‘Independence!’

The show of strength was held on Catalonia’s annual National Day on Friday, at a time of high political tension between the region and Spain’s central government.

The enormous demonstration comes just two weeks ahead of regional elections that could prove to be a make-or-break moment for Catalonia’s independence movement.

Although it is not an official referendum, the Catalan president Artur Mas has transformed the regional elections into a de facto vote on whether or not to break away from Spain.

Police and the central government gave very different turnout figures for the event however.

City police claimed that around 1.4million people turned out for the march, but Spain’s central government put the estimate at just over half a million.

The march came just three months ahead of the general elections in Spain, the eurozone’s fourth-biggest economy.

The question of separation has proved to be one of contention in Catalonia, but polls this week suggest the pro-independence candidates could win a majority of seats in the Catalan parliament.

Wow this people may finally get their wish with the way they are going about it peacefully because history is in their favour. I only don't know how the Spanish la liga would be like without Barcelona if they aint allowed to continue in it
