Ui, Oau, Unilag Missing As Uniport Makes Africa’s Top 30 Universities by Nobody: 10:49pm On Jan 02, 2016 |
The University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo
University and the University of Lagos are
missing from the list of the 30 best universities
in Africa for 2015 in a rating released by the
World Economic Forum (WEF).
The University of Port Harcourt was named as
the sixth best university in Africa, trailing four
South African and one Ugandan university.
The list, which was dominated by South Africa
and Egypt, saw the southern Africa country
amass 12 positions on the ranking, with the north
African country trailing with half a dozen
schools.
Morocco had three universities. Tunisia came up
with another three, while Kenya, Ghana,
Cameroon, Uganda, Ethiopia and Nigeria had a
single university in the 2015 ranking.
According to WEF , “these results are essentially
based on the amount of citations there are for
the university’s work”.
Quoting Times Higher Education (THE), WEF said
the universities are “derived from the
methodology for the current world university
ranking, using the 13 factors (below), combining
THE’s own enormous database of statistics along
with the Elsevier’s Scopus database – a system
that highlights some of the continent’s top
performers in terms of how often research
papers are referred to and cited by other
academics globally”.
“This methodology is designed for the research-
led globally facing university. Times Higher
Education emphasised that not everyone in
Africa will find the metrics appropriate to their
mission or their strategic priorities making this
ranking a starting point of a longer, inclusive
conversation involving African institutions.”

WEF seems just coming up....a newbie in the system I suppose else they wouldn't have rated the uniport over the great ife, UI and the major class, the unilag. I don't want to know what the criteria for the research was, all i see here is flaws everywhere. |

Believe it or not, that's beyond anyone's concern.Mind u,WEF is not a newbie, perhaps you've not been reading educational articles. Remember few months ago THE ranked same uniport 6th in africa perhaps THE is also a newbie. We should understand that this ranking is based on citations and number of research papers. We don't even knw the quality of human resources in that skul...I mean they have high class professors including former vc's from the so called gr8 unis in nigeria. I don't knw why we are just commiting fallacy of "ignorantio elenchi"(missing the point) cos the premises for our argument doesn't logically imply our conclusion.I may nt be a student of uniport,bt I knw the school am talking abt.IS nt abt the structures & big names which I think is the reason 4 all these baseless arguments."a babe graduated with 2:1 & can't speak" so? this is wht the nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie describes as "the danger of a single story",you simply commiting fallacy of converse accident(hasty generalization). People are arguing abt uniport producing "a babe" that can't speak English, same uniport produced the likes of Yul Edochie,Agbani Darego(one time miss world),Clem Ohameze,Monalisa Chinda,Rita dominic,Goodluck and a host of others.believe me you aren't in any way more competent than the aforementioned persons in the use of language. Our country is still in the doldrums today cos of these sentiments and single stories creating stereotype.we shld be hppy and stop"behaving like educated illiterates".People dat don't even knw the number of research papers each of these unis present each year are just saying wht they don't knw cos of structures & big names. |
