Lend-To hand out usually for a certain length of time.

e.g-Banks lend money.
Libraries lend books.
My mother lent me some money, and I must pay her back soon.

Borrow-To take with permission usually for a certain length of time.

e.g-I borrowed some money off my mother, and I must pay her back soon.

When you borrow,you "COLLECT/RECEIVE"...
When you lend,you " GIVE"...
Definitely, both for a short time and you give whatever it is back to the owner.
e.g. I will LEND(GIVE) Mabel mine;Joel BORROWED(COLLECTED) hers.
