[b]In 1961, Murtala Ramat Mohammed graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, England and returned to Nigeria where he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army as a second Lieutenant. However, Murtala was not happy with the Nigerian Army he met and felt the level of professionalism was below what was required. At the time Murtala was on a Military tactics course in NMTC Kaduna and Major Ojukwu ( as he then was at the time) was his chief instructor. Murtala approached Ojukwu and told him that he had made up his mind to resign from the Army. Ojukwu talked Murtala out of resigning and even suggested to him to join the newly created signals corps. Shortly after this, Ojukwu was redeployed to Lagos where he became the first indigenous quarter-master general of the Nigerian Army while Murtala, who had heeded Ojukwus advice, joined the signals corps and was sent on a signals course to Catterik, England. As history would have it,General Ironsi would later make Murtala head of the signals corps, a position Murtala used to organise the Nothern counter coup that would kill Ironsi and over 300 Igbo officers which precipitated the northern pogroms that killed a further 50,000 Easterners and led to the declaration of Biafra and the civil war that followed.
