At any point in time, there are a set of
universities favored by Nigerian students. This
might depend on a lot of things; from the
reputation of the school to the selection of
courses they provide. This year, these 10
Universities are the favorite and most popular
among Nigerian students.
10. Kogi State University: Kogi State University
commenced academic activities in April, 2000
in six Faculties. Namely; Faculties of
Agriculture, Arts and Humanities, Law,
Management Sciences, Natural Sciences and
Social Sciences, presently comprising about 30
Departments.
The University has commenced the
establishment of Faculty of Medicine with the
office and laboratory complexes under
construction.
9. University Of Abuja: This University provides
campus learning as well as distance learning
programmes. Its Centre for Distance Learning
School provides university education to those
who cannot acquire such education through the
regular university system and those interested
in acquiring new knowledge and specialized
skills.
8. Babcock University: The university is located
equidistant between Ibadan and Lagos.
Enrolment was about 6,000 as of 2009.
It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist
education system, the world’s second largest
Christian school system.
7. University of Ilorin: The University certainly
has some famous alumni, which includes the
likes of Nkem Owoh and Femi Adebayo.
6. Covenant University: Covenant University
was established by the World Mission Agency
(an arm of the Living Faith Church Worldwide,
also known as Winners’ Chapel. David Oyedepo,
the founder and presiding Bishop of Winners’
Chapel, is Chancellor of the University.
5. National Open University of Nigeria: The
National Open University of Nigeria is a Federal
Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution,
the first of its kind in the West Africa sub-
region. It is Nigeria’s largest tertiary institution
in terms of student numbers and is popularly
referred to as‘NOUN’.
4. University of Ibadan: The University of
Ibadan(UI) is the oldest and one of the most
prestigious institution in the country. Besides
the College of Medicine, there are now ten
other faculties: Arts , Science, Agriculture and
Forestry, Social Sciences, Education, Veterinary
Medicine, Technology, Law, Public Health and
Dentistry.
3. University of Nigeria, Nsukka: The main
campus of the University is located on 871
hectares of hilly savannah in the town of
Nsukka, about eighty kilometres north of Enugu,
and enjoys a very pleasant and healthy climate.
There are modern shopping facilities and a
large market in Nsukka town. The Nsukka
campus houses the Faculties of Agriculture,
Arts, Biological Sciences, Education,
Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical
Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary
Medicine.
2. Obafemi Awolowo University: The university
has 13 faculties » and two colleges — the
Postgraduate College and the College of Health
Sciences — administered in more than 60
departments. It was previously associated with
Loma Linda University in California, USA.
Ever since the establishment of OAU, a total of
82 departments have emerged with numerous
courses offered.
1. University of Lagos: For a long time now,
this has been the most popular University in the
country . The University has remained one of
the most competitive in the country in terms of
admissions. Not withstanding, with
approximately 45,000 students as of 2010, the
University of Lagos has one of the largest
student populations of any University in the
country.
