Dogara Charges Security Agents On Intelligence Gathering by Nnabugwu8590: 8:35am On Feb 26, 2016
The Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon.
Yakubu Dogara, has charged all Nigerian
security agencies to embrace intelligence
gathering and information sharing to
effectively tackle the serious security
challenges facing the country.
Dogara gave the charge when participants
of Executive Intelligence Course 9 of the
Institute for Security Studies Bwari Abuja
paid him a courtesy visit in his office at the
National Assembly.
He identified as one of the major challenges
in onerous task of tackling issues of
insecurity in Nigeria as the inability of
security agents to gather intelligent
information and share it among themselves.
The lawmaker nonetheless praised the
spirit of unity and inter-agency
collaboration among some of the security
agencies saying that it is in such manners
that the tools of leadership are sharpened.
He further stated that the basic duty of
government is the security of lives and
properties, adding that where it cannot be
guarranteed, democracy is endangered.
According to him, “the paradox in the
African context is that strong men build
weak institutions and a it’s worrisome
situation because without strong
institutions there is no way democracy can
take root in the continent.”
He expressed optimism over a harmonious
working relationship the visit of the faculty
board members and 50 course 9
participants of the Institute will afford the
legislature in Nigeria in its task of making
quality legislations and over sighting of the
Executive Arm.
Earlier in a remark, Director of the Institute
Mr M. B Seyifa hinted that the Institute was
establish in 2012 by the management of
the Department of State Security DSS in
order to bridge the knowledge gap in
security issues.
He also hinted of the resolve of the institute
to tour the Sub-Sahara African region in
order to secure it, and also explained that
only 17 out of the 50 course participants
were drawn from the DSS while other
security agencies made up the rest course
participants.
Moreover, he explained the essence of the
group’s visitation as one geared towards
seeking greater collaboration with the
leadership of the apex legislature saying
that in matters of national security,the
National Assembly is a strategic partner.
