There have been a lot of drama at the National Assembly these few months which in some cases has generated backlash from Nigerians.

NAIJ.com has gathered the top five stories that rocked the National Assembly these past months.

1. Sex scandal: Three members of the House of Representatives have been accused of sexual misconduct by the United State government. This was brought to light after the US ambassador, Mr. James Entwistle, sent a petition to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

The three house of rep members include Mohammed Gololo representing Gamawa
Federal Constituency of Bauchi state, Samuel Ikon representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium federal constituency, Akwa Ibom state and Mark Gbillah representing Gwer East/Gwer West federal constituency in Benue state.

Gololo was accused of soliciting for sex from a hotel attendant while Ikon and Gbillah were allegedly said to have asked a parking attendant to arrange prostitutes.

However, ten lawmakers were invited by the US government for the International Visitor Leadership programme held between April 7 and 13, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio.

However, 10 lawmakers who attended international Visitors Leadership Programme in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, were interrogated by officials of the US State Department over allegations of sexual misconduct against three of their colleagues.

2. Budget padding scandal: The budget scandal rocking the National Assembly is still generating heated debate, and Nigerians are yet stop talking about it. Abdulmumin Jibrin, the former House committee chairman on appropriations blew the whistle on his colleagues over budget padding allegations.

He accused the Speaker of going home with N25 million monthly, for which he never gave any account, while also adding that a five-man cabal consisting of two governors and three House members was constituted by the Speaker, to shield him against possible prosecution.

3. Senate forgery: Senate president, Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, alongside two other top officers of the National Assembly were charged to court over allegations of forgery of its standing rules.

The AGF was summoned on Tuesday, June 21 by its committee on judiciary to explain and justify with evidence the basis for his act and to explain why it does not constitute incompetence, gross misconduct, contempt of court and abuse of office.

However, the Senate on Thursday, June 30, walked out Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, Okoi Obla, for attempting to represent Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, over alleged forgery of Senate rules. Meanwhile, the Senate president Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu have said they are innocent of these charges.

4. CCT trial: Following his inauguration on May 29, President Muhammadu Buhari directed that all political office holders should declare their assets on assumption of office.
This directive led to the collection of assets declaration form from the CCT by Saraki, which according to the tribunal turned out to be false.

The Senate president in his form declared that his total wealth which includes N2.5million cash at hand and a total of N51million in various Nigerian banks at the time he filed the document coupled with some money lodged in some foreign banks at the time and companies amongst others.

According to an affidavit and asset declaration form presented by Saraki before and Florin High Court, he was said to have been worth N10 billion naira at the time he was the governor of Kwara state in 2003.

Out of the N10 billion, the Senate president was said to be worth N8billion while his wife and four children was worth N1.8 billion and N202 million each respectively. His case has been ongoing since September 22, 2015.

5. N4.7 billion exotic cars: The Nigerian Senate spent N4.7 billion on exotic cars for senators which angered many Nigerians.

However, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, April 19, justified its decision to buy 36 sport utility vehicles for senators just as it clarified that the money came from its 2015 budget.

Senator Abdullahi Gobir, the chairman, committee on Senate services, in an interview with journalists said the Senate did not acquire 108 cars but 36.

He said each of the senators from the 36 states, who are either chairmen or vice-chairmen of committees, got a vehicle, with the understanding of their two other colleagues. Gobir also put the value of each of the Land Cruiser VXR V8 vehicles at N36.6m including the cost of purchase, and other taxes.

just within the space of a year and half we have witness such scandals in the house



Nigerians will be wiser now to vote people of good character and not just.....
