Senate Press Corps plans boycott of plenary due to alleged high handedness of Clerk

There was confusion in the Senate on Thursday as Television Cameramen and photographers boycotted legislative proceedings due to high handedness of the Clerk to the Senate.

In a buildup to this development, it was learnt that some Senators on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) complained about the position of Cameramen during plenary.

In the Chambers, lawmakers have a tradition of sitting arrangement where those of the same political platforms sit together, but some of them complained to the Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Nelson Ayewoh that their counterpart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were given adequate coverage more than them.

Cameramen on their part who usually occupy a place at the directive of the Clerk expressed that they hold no ulterior motive against the PDP Senators.

The situation degenerated when on Thursday, the Clerk dissatisfied with the conduct of Cameramen, said, he could only allowed five of them into the red Chambers.

Thereafter, the protesting Cameramen resolved not to give coverage and refused to allow any of their colleagues entry.

Confirming the report to DAILY POST, the Chairman, Senate Press. Corps, Mr. Cosmas Ekpunobi wondered why the Clerk arrived at allowing only five Cameramen into the chambers without recourse to the association.

He explained that the situation would have been saved if the Clerk was decorous enough in handling the matters by consulting with the leadership of the Press Corps.

He promised to take the matter to the Senate President. Meanwhile, this is the first time coverage of Senate Proceedings would be boycotted by journalists.

As at the time of filing this report, print and online journalists in the Press Corps were contemplating outright boycott of further plenaries if nothing was done to save the situation.
