Mr Chukwudi Onuamadike, a.k.a Evans, who is presumed to be the most dreaded kidnapper in Nigeria, was arrested by the police on Saturday June 10, 2017 at his Magodo GRA phase 2 mansion. The arrest came less than a month after the police announced a thirty-million-naira bounty in return for information leading to his arrest.

The notorious kidnapper is alleged to have also co-ordinated bank robberies across Oyo, Port Harcourt and Abia, as well as numerous high-profile kidnaps whose ransoms amount to hundreds of millions of naira.

His arrested was orchestrated by The Inspector-General’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by ACP Kyari.

The police force has been receiving showers of praises from the public on the successful arrest and crackdown of this notorious syndicate criminal gang.

The news on the crackdown of the notorious kidnapper and his gang has caught the attention of the general public and media houses as fresh revelations on the mode of operation of the dreaded gang keeps surfacing on a daily basis.

However, some members of the public have taken the position of reproaching the media over its keen interest on the arrest and the entire case in general. But what they do fail to understand is that the media has a vital role to play in the successful completion of this case through the dispatch of key information. This would ensure that the culprits are brought to book, as the public will keep an open eye on the entire process to eschew the hijack of the case.

People believe that the billionaire kidnapper also has some big wigs backing him in this vicious crime he’s being accused of. Such influential people would stop at nothing to get the attention of the public off the case, in order to secure the closure of the case (this is naija, anything is possible). This again is another key factor necessitating the full coverage of the entire prosecution process by the media until justice is achieved.

Finally, millions of people within and outside the country (foreigners) are paying close attention to details to ascertain how the new anti-kidnapping law recently signed by the Lagos state Government would be implemented in this case. Much attention is also on the judiciary. The case would once again serve as a test of fairness on the judicial process. All these updates have to be well covered by the media to sate the curiosity of the public.

Therefore, when next you reprimand the media over its many reports on the Evans Case, or you happen to see someone do so, recall these few key factors to mind and have a rethink.

The notorious kidnapper is still yet to be charged to court, but he being smart, has acted first by charging the Police and the Inspector General to court over an infringement on his rights through unlawful and prolonged detention.

We are all watching…
