Ndu mmiri, ndu azu!!

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of Things Fall Apart, a novel written by Nwa afo Igbo - Prof. Chinua Achebe is on.

At age 77, Chinua Achebe is living in grace and in exile, housed in a cottage built just for him on the campus of Bard College, lonely for his Ogidi country home and the people for whom his stories have been written.

Let all who can; salute him and wish him well also.

Re: Igbos come show your proverbs skills by youngies(m): 11:07am On Mar 06, 2008
ifyalways:

youngies kwanum more about him.
gini mere o jiri noro on exile ?

In 1990, Achebe was severely injured in a car accident in Nigeria that left him paralyzed from the waist down. That year he came to Bard at the invitation of its president, Leon Botstein, to continue his recuperation, and he has stayed, living in exile from his homeland. (Remember most intellectuals were in exile because of the military juanta - IBB)

In 1999 he returned to his village for an extended festival in his honor. "I couldn't do anything else, except receive people," he says. But more recently, his protests against government corruption in Nigeria have made him unwelcome there. After years of dignified but forthright objections to Nigeria's often-tyrannical rulers, in 2004 he declined the high Nigerian honor of Commander of the Federal Republic. Excerpts of his rejection letter:

"I write this letter with a very heavy heart. For some time now I have watched events in Nigeria with alarm and dismay. I have watched particularly the chaos in my own state of Anambra where a small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom. I am appalled by the brazenness of this clique and the silence, if not connivance, of the Presidency.

Forty three years ago, at the first anniversary of Nigeria’s independence I was given the first Nigerian National Trophy for Literature. In 1979, I received two further honors – the Nigerian National Order of Merit and the Order of the Federal Republic – and in 1999 the first National Creativity Award.

I accepted all these honors fully aware that Nigeria was not perfect; but I had a strong belief that we would outgrow our shortcomings under leaders committed to uniting our diverse peoples.

Nigeria’s condition today under your watch is, however, too dangerous for silence. I must register my disappointment and protest by declining to accept the high honor awarded me in the 2004 Honors List."

So in respect to the above letter he said, "That has changed everything for me," he says. "I can't simply get on a plane and return home."

The idea that he will be a permanent expatriate clearly saddens him. It angers him, too. Nigeria is a study in wasted opportunity and promise, he contends.

"Nigeria should not be a third-world country, at this stage," he says. "It is very lucky in human and material resources. So to see it going to waste is very annoying

Ify I hope I was able to give you some clue wink

Ify weep not for ndi Igbo for we are made from a special stock.

It gladdens my heart to know that there are so many Igbo sons and daughters who are already stepping into the big shoes left behind by these our aged and dead heros.

Young igbo writers like: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Half of a Yellow Sun ) have already won the Orange Broadband Prize. Mr. Dulue Mbachu is also emerging as a strong force.

In the music scene, I need not remind you of folks like: the famed Peter & Paul Okoye (P square), Faze, Sunny Bobo, NaggaRaw, Ikechukwu e.t.c
