There has been a rising need by youngster to trace their origin from their roots. Consequently, reliance on the methodology established by history research projects and research materials has increased overtime as it offers a blueprint for research.
Moreover, before sojourning on this expedition, certain things need be taken into consideration, most especially the society in which one needs to go into.

The society is a great determinant to how information and evidences as regard one’s root could be gotten. The increasing need to trace one’s root need has If it is in a traditional society like that of Nigeria, one needs to rely majorly on oral tradition, on the other hand in a modernized society like the U.S, written and to a lesser extent oral tradition.

Oral Tradition: This has to do with the use of information passed down from one generation to another through words of the mouth. As such before one proceeds in making material findings, it is necessary to go into a session of interview. It makes no sense to spend days trawling database to find out your great-grandfather’s surname when someone in the family already knows it. This is the first step one should take with the aim of tracing one’s genealogy. It’s necessary one talks to either parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents.

In most families there is at least one person who keeps track of the extended network of relatives. Nevertheless, information gotten here should be handled with a health form of skepticism as bias might have it play in the verbal affirmation of family members so it’s always necessary to meet family friends, neighbors etc. Results gotten from this part with make room for further research.

Written Document: This will also help to an extent depending on the society in tracing in tracing one’s root. Written document here might be letters, work papers, church materials like baptismal certificate, school materials, amongst other.

However, in modernized societies where records/database are stored on net, tracing one’s genealogy could easily be done online through the use of some applications which, though it not really a trusted mean. So one still needs to rely on oral and written sources in making an authentic conclusion.
