Nigeria’s Poverty Index Stands At 53.7%, Says UNDP by sophsia62: 5:11am On Oct 09, 2018
Nigeria’s poverty index currently stood at 53.7 per cent, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria Human Development Report 2016.

The report noted that the incidence of poverty, which is the percentage of Nigerians who are poor are prevalent in Sokoto State with 89.9 per cent, followed by Jigawa State (86.1 per cent).

Rivers and Ebonyi States shared 58.9 per cent each while Osun State was adjudged to have the lowest prevalence with 17.5 per cent.

The Human Development Indices (HDI), which was produced in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), is the most updated computation since 2013.

Released by the statistical agency yesterday, the study further put the intensity of poverty in the country at 41.9 per cent- implying that the poor Nigerians are deprived in 41.9 per cent of the dimensions.

It stated that poverty intensity was highest in Sokoto State (50.4 per cent) while Osun State still had the lowest intensity at (35.5 per cent).

The UNDP said the intensity of poverty is more prevalent in the Northwest zone (45 percent) closely followed by Northeast with 44 percent while Southwest and South East have the lowest ratings at (38 percent).

Using a broad range of parameters to determine the HDI, the report noted that 39.6 per cent of the population had not completed five years of schooling while child school attendance is 23.8 per cent.

It stated:”There were variations in the performances of the states; 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja recorded decline in the Education Index while two states namely; Borno and Jigawa had their Education Index improved.”

It also recorded the life expectancy for the country at 48.97, indicating a slight increase over the value for 2013 which was 48.44

Well, while this should not be turned into partisan politics, there is no way we can talk about this without talking about our stolen wealth by past leaders. They stole like there was no tomorrow and didn't care about the ordinary man.

The "tomorrow" is upon us now and all the negative indices start coming out. Unfortunately, the man who rescued us from becoming another Greece (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/business/international/greece-debt-crisis-euro.html), who made sure the rot left behind by PDP's 16 years of locust was arrested is getting the stick from supporters of corruption.

Imagine what Nigeria could have become if PMB had not given out bail-outs to 28 states within his first few months of becoming president! These were states owing salaries of between 8 and 10 months.

Imagine if PMB had not blocked the leakages upon assumption of office despite inheriting paltry $27bn (?) in FR with crude at $29 per barrel?

Today, light has tremendously improved, roads are being built, railways are being constructed, we now produce about 80% of the rice we eat, children are being fed in school, market women are being assisted, etc.

We will NEVER return to those years of LOOTOCRACY of PDP now being spearheaded by Atiku. NEVER!

Look at the brainwashed frustrated things up here:

We remember where we were in 2015 when PDP/GEJ were crashing our economy.

As at then, the idiot of a president was already borrowing to pay FG workers salaries. Many states were unable to pay their workers. Our reserves were almost gone. GEJ and his gang of thieves finished Nigeria. If any of you had not become of age then, Google is still free till today.

Another bad one again. undecided And APC is in self delusion that Nigerians have enjoyed the dividends of democracy And deluded fellows are telling us that the useless & lifeless man should return again as president?

On the other hand, the national per capita poverty rate remained very high at more than 60% of the population, with little evidence of recent progress in poverty reduction

http://www.worldbank.org/en/country/nigeria/publication/nigeria-economic-report-improved-economic-outlook-in-2014-and-prospects-for-continued-growth-look-good

At 53.7%, it's actually lower than what we had in 2014 which stood at 60%.

Of course there's always room for improvement and it should be better. The recession didn't help but we should be working in getting it to reduce drastically

As at 2014, it was 60%. Now it's 53.7%. don't you think that's an improvement? Or you believe this report and reject the other?

So in 1984 what was stolen before Buhari also plunged Nigerians into unspeakable poverty .. A totally visionless man's goes over 6 months without an economic plan or Cabinet, increased the price of petrol and electricity tariff the same week, deploys troops into the Fragile Niger delta to disrupt oil production at a time oil prices are falling , implements TSA roughly not following laid down plan for implementation in phases , starts an illegal regime of unjust coporate fines which lead to sudden capital flight , encourage you fulani kins men to step up their wars against farmers and now you want to blame looters for the recession and poverty that followed , Oga you lie Buhari 110% responsible

don't you have shame? Yes we remember where we were before buhari came into power. Nigerians were eating very well, employment rate was rising, we even became the number one economy in nigeria, companies were investing in nigeria. But since your lord buhari came in we have had massive job losses and counting.we have become the poorest nation on earth, corruption is skyhigh, no project has been started by this govt much less completing it in almost 4 years. Massive killings and insecurity. The list goes on about the failures of this govt. In almost 4 years they have not improve anything in this country. Shame on you.
