A forty-five-year-old suspected
telecommunication mast thief,
Taofeek Olanrewaju, has confessed
that he was promised N5,000 for
the vandalisation of the Airtel
Telecommunication masts located
at Dagbolu in Ogun State.
The suspect who was paraded by
the Oyo State Police Command,
along with other five suspects, told
LEADERSHIP that he was invited to
join the gang for the execution of
the ‘business’.
Olanrewaju, spare parts seller at
the popular Gate Spare parts
market, Ibadan, said because he
had no money to cater for the
needs of his family, he decided to
join them when they promised to
pay him N5,000 after the
‘business’.
“My friend, Kazeem Tijani who sells
scraps at the Gate invited me to
join them in loading the engines at
Dagbolu.
“I was not informed that it was a
stolen property. I was promised
N5,000 and since I had no job to
do and no money to feed my
family, I joined them,” he said.
The suspect who claimed that they
were six, disclosed that one of
them identified as Dauda had ran
away.
Speaking, the security guard
attached to the masts, Isiaka
Jimoh, said the suspects had laid
ambush for him and tied him with
rope before they commenced the
operation.
He said they took away his locally
made gun, cutlass and charms
before beating him up.
The security guard, a father of 10
children, disclosed that the
suspect’s two engines and eight
batteries were loaded in a bus
with registration number Oyo AKN
301 XA.
Jimoh, who later escaped with
wounds, informed a community
leader, Samuel Olatoye, about the
robbery incident, alerted the police
at Akanran in Ona Ara Local
Government Area of Oyo State
