You will damage your car or even cause a crash if driving it on low fuel or with your tank on empty.

Normally, around 3.8L reserve fuel is built in from the empty line and the car fuel light will illuminate if your gas tank becomes empty or nearly empty.

While fuel gauge tells you how much fuel is left, it may sometimes provide inconsistent data depends on whether you are on a hill or not

Why you should NEVER drive with under a quarter of tank of fuel
A faulty pump is mainly due to the constant use of the fuel pump over years. However, there are some other factors leading to premature failure which are:

1. Low reserve fuel
The reserve fuel serves as a coolant for the electric pump motor. In contrast, a low gas tank will cause the vehicle to pump air, making heat and leading the fuel pump to wear prematurely and probably fail.

2. The Dirt
The dirt in the bottom of your gas tank is one of the key factors damaging your fuel pump. When your tank is nearly empty, the dirt from water, poor grade fuel or rust will be sucked up and jams the pump.

Driving with your tank being empty or nearly empty not only results in costly repairs but also puts you in the dangerous situations when driving

Driving with your tank being empty or nearly empty not only results in costly repairs but also puts you in the dangerous situations when driving. Imagine you are in the middle lane with no hard shoulder and your car engine suddenly stops running, how dangerous it will be?

Please note that while fuel gauge tells you how much fuel is left, it may sometimes provide inconsistent data depends on whether you are on a hill or not.
