The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has for the past few years rolled out a few funding options to boost local agricultural production, with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in food. But despite all these, we can’t confidently point to significant results in the past four years, with the rate of smallholder farming remaining low.

The battle has been against smuggling, low interest in farming and rising insecurity. Now that the CBN has introduced new funding for smallholder farmers, the question should begin with, how do we address these underlying issues?
