Gombe Commences Four Million Trees Planting To Tackle Desertification

Gombe State Government has stated that administration of Governor Inuwa Yahaya will employ 27,000 youths for four million tree planting scheme.

A statement issued on Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to Gombe Governor, Ismaila Uba Misilli said a pilot planting of 1 Million trees has commenced with over 13 thousand already planted in Gombe metropolis and environs.

Misilli said the programme tagged Gombe Goes Green (3G) is an initiative of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration to plant 1 million trees yearly aimed at tackling desertification and other environmental challenges, noting that official flag-off ceremony will be announced soon.

He explained that 27,000 youths will be employed with monthly stipend of N7500 to ensure implementation of Gombe Goes Green project.

The statement read in part

”The environmental challenges in Gombe State are not limited to desertification. The state is also prone to erosion problem, especially in the Gombe metropolis with a severe gully erosion and the planting of more trees is aimed at arresting the situation.

”Already 11 Non-Governmental Organisations ( NGOs) have been recruited to commence the work in 11 sites across Gombe Local Government Area in accordance with International best practice.”

It would be recalled that Governor Inuwa Yahaya had recently vowed to embark on massive tree planting in the state as a strategic measure to counter the tragedy of desertification and flooding which pose threats to the lives of residents in various communities as well as infrastructures like roads and bridges in the state.

The SSA Media said with the approval of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, the first component of the project has kick-started with tree planting campaign in residential areas, public places and schools as well as to sensitise residents on the need and benefit of tree planting.

The project has as a component, creation of shelter belt in four local government areas in the northern part of the state.
