Katsina — The management of Umaru Musa Yar'adua University in Katsina State at the weekend said the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities is illegal and of no effect.

Addressing newsmen yesterday, the registrar of the university, Abdu Halliru Abdullahi, said the union was not pursuing its demands through the proper channel.

He maintained that the Industrial Labour Act states that workers should give their employers adequate notice before embarking on strike, but that the union did not do that.

He also said that the union failed to furnish the management with sufficient evidence of a duly constituted congress, which voted to ratify its decision.

The registrar then urged the university community to disregard the union's notice of strike and called on the union to suspend the strike failure upon which, he said, would attract appropriate disciplinary action.

Reacting, the chairman of ASUU in the university, Comrade Usman Maska insisted that the union followed the constitutional means and that if by midnight of Sunday, the government refused to respond to its request, it would go ahead with the strike.
