Capitalism Is Not Working For Ibo Society by doncartel: 9:59pm On May 21, 2007
This is a mystery. All over the world,it is accepted that trade, commerce, foreign investment, business and finance generally, create a prosperous society.Prosperity makes it much easier for a society to progress in all areas and then be called a developed society[or country].Economics is the main focus of developed countries.
I then wonder why the society of our great ibo tribe-naturally blessed with this talent which is almost part of our culture would be so horribly undeveloped,at least physically and infrastructure-wise.I have tried to understand where things are going wrong. Can i have some contributions please.I think there may just not b good ideas on how to channel that potential into creating a better society

too many traditonal elites in almost every local government and at the same time they are elected officals to represent the same people as the traditional elite; in emphasis to what i just said, my point is that all these self claimed elites also get government pay while their people suffer and don't forget about the chieftancy money. The above problem is a Nigerian problem that people don't want to talk about but is indirectly killing them like a cancer.
As for the eastern Nigeria, there is the migration problem, the lack of infrastructure problem, lack of solid organisation and authority that everyone respects from federal to local level, Federal ignorance of the people, individual intrest but care of others eventhough it could turn out selfish, and just a matter of time for things to fall in place and become right.
One fact is that an ibo man sees himself nigerian before anything else first thats why they 'r everywhere in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond and i don't mean just visiting sometimes they actually live there and are also the most linguist people in Nigeria.

May God shower his grace on Nigeria. Amen

Would you address selfishness, dis-honesty, and maybe there are too my chiefs and not enough indians?. Don't forget, the system fo government we are building is footed with wrong foundation. Our cultures in Nigeria do not compliment the system we are practising. We need to stop mixing certain things together they just don't fit.

@rist, i don't know who u'r referring to when u mean indians cuz i never used indians on this thread maybe in some other thread about el ruffai. But in naija, is almost factual that every local government has a traditional ruler and at the same time that same local government has a local government chairman who was elected by the people, all being paid by the government and the traditional chief goes further in taking bribes and gifts from people who want to build things in their community especially if u'r not from that community, they also take gifts and bribes from wanna be called chiefs and all kinds of titles. My thing is that many have lost their role beginning from the slave days and colonization era when people were killed and replaced or overthrown by some elements in the society or the colonizers. This facts tell me that what we have in Nigeria is something that will come back to bite us just because we don't want to experiment and strategise for something new. We say is our history just like the way our leaders love power and wish that they be in throne for ever and if they had their way, will sign an accord decreeing that their bloodline take the throne and so on.

To cut the long story short, i 'll summarize their disadvantages:

1) too many leaders lead to no work done cuz there's no accountability.

2)Many who claim to be this or that might not be when put to the test, so a false leader is a false leader regardless of time. At least we should verify their claims and make sure it stands the date of time.

3)They tap into useful money designated for the people and could be a hinderance in development in terms of infrastructure, demography, and anything of this nature.

4)What happens when you have a problem with the chief of the local government and you don't have no where to go?That means u'r at his mercy and that is corruption and oppression.

5)We should either use them or the government in order to clarify issues.

6)They are the main actors and mckoys used for rigging elections.

We can always make one chief per state but never a heridity type stuff. We can make the current traditional elites an iconic figure for a day in a year. like a simple plan will be that everyone converges at the Abuja park or something with the president present and so on and also that day should be declared a public holiday.
The main thing is that they should be removed from lots of priviledge they currently enjoy which in my view only brings enemity amongst people of the same clan or others he thinks have plans against him. It is also a form of welfare for an abled body that would and should be contributing in the society.

Look , Nigeria as a whole needs change and this change should also be on the drawing board or at least some form of limit in their powers.
