Osagyefo98: The former and the latter are different points. (1) The former said Edo/Bini are Yoruba people. I disagreed with this because they simply aren’t Yorubas. I clarified, however, that their monarchical government was introduced by the Yorubas. . . . (2) The latter, on the other hand, said the Edo/Bini are more of Yorubas politically and culturally. Here you made a comparative case of who the Edos are closer to of Yorubas and Igbos. Moreover, you were quite specific about the kind of closeness you refer to, namely: politics and culture. Here your point is valid because of the fact that the heaviest influence on the Edo/Bini traditional politics and culture was from the Yorubas; namely: the Yoruba monarchy from Ife that came to rule over the already pre-existing distinct Edo/Bini ethno-linguistic group. ————————————————————————— To make this even clearer, consider the quite similar fact that the people who came to be termed “Nigerians” are a different and distinct people from the “Britons”/“British people”. However, just like in the Yoruba vs. Edo/Bini case, the Britons/British brought a foreign government over Nigeria. And as such Nigeria is more British (in terms of modern politics and culture) than it is French for example. [This obvious conclusion doesn’t equate to Nigerians being Britons]. Cheers! 2 Likes 2 Shares |

gregyboy:cc: Osagyefo98 “Lieut. King found that “the king can sell his subjects when convicted of crime, or when they have incurred his displeasure.” The royal right of abuse seems to have survived to the last days, for Gallwey (p. 129) mentions that “the Benin people ... are treated as slaves by the king, the title of king’s slave being considered an honor.” We have seen above that ... the mass of the people were practically slaves to the king, ...” — H.Ling Roth, (1903), p.103. Obvious Conclusion: The Edo people whom the 'Oba' (not ‘Ogie’) reigns over are obviously not of the same ethno-linguistic identity as him. Obvious Reason: No king regards his own people as his slaves as described above. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

TAO11: Lol, funny fellow, when am ready to disgrace you especially, it will be an ovation wen i do so... I would make it vdry loud, i dont know were you're coming from babe, because benins didnt sell their own, if they committed crimes they were punished by death, thesame European made it know in document that there were no crime in benin, and that the oba was so feared by his people, and all crimes were punishable by death , Again the benins even stop slave trading before the British stopped it, the benis sold yorubas as the slaves and it was also documented that slaves masters had to check regularly to see if any benin were mistankely captured and if seen would be freed instantly Unlike your ancestors who sold their lands to strangers who just held guns and your slave masters from the north were also puppet to the white britsh men serving them as servicemen with no gains , while benin hired whitemen to fight in thier wars for free..... The European who made the quote in this last paragraph was describing is own perception, to him the oba had utmost absolute power, he thought the people were being enslaved by the oba autonomy, he soon forgot the oba power wasn't absolute is powers were checked. Oba ewakpae story would be a good refrence to this Tao11 stop fooling your people to believe the oba is of yoruba origin you know the truth tell them dont let your ego hide the truth from them You know more than any yoruba om this forum and even more than me, you have come across the truth while reading history that its association with ife had no historical backings it only emerged after eweka made those public statements in 1914 thereabouts See the scrrenshot below, the writeuo is ready just waiting me to press send... But i wont not now 2 Likes

gregyboy:Stop clowning, my slave. There was even a title for the Edo people. The title is known as “King’s Slave”. So, no pErCePtIoN in a title. A title is what you’re told of. Not what you see. And the Edo people are said to be very proud of this title — “King’s slave”. Moreover, the Yoruba-Oba of Benin sells the Edo people. Read the quotation again, but this time slowly. cc: gregyboy, aka Edeyoung. 3 Likes 3 Shares |

gregyboy:Now watch him avoid you. Fulanis thrives in putting a wedge among neighbouring tribes so they can easily have their way against each of them. It has been working for them for long. Do your research about the fulanis' foray into northern Nigeria and you'll be amazed at the type of people the people of Nigeria are playing with. They fear the Igbos so much because we're the backbone stopping them from taking over Nigeria. His other names are Meles-Zenawi, Julius-Malema and a few others I can't remember now but I always notice his signature when he uses any moniker. 1 Like |

gregyboy: My opinion remains the understanding of majority and world order. What on earth will make a sane person claim yoruba kingdoms like Bini a d Itshekiri.... something that has its full relationship between both. My submission is solely on similarities visible to this day. No matter how we put it, it is just for the progress of Oduduwa republic. |

Well I might as well doubt your intelligence and reasoning. Commissioners in Obaseki govt have yoruba names, are they foreigners? no they are binis. Rotimi, Tunde, akindele are binis and Yorubas.. History today is more stronger with similarities we can see not hearsay...such can't be said of ndigbo and Ile binu. |

Perhaps you didnt read my previous response. Can you not see how daft you are sounding? Everyone is telling you that slavery was a crime against humanity and here Mr foolish having the nerve to be quoting a book written by the same people that did the enslaving. Well done, Mr foolish of the year. Any Eurocentric writer that wants to write about slavey must first realise that they dont posses the moral right to does so without first spending an entire chapter apologising for the hortific incident in the first place. I would say i'm lenient with such demands here. Ignorance isnt an excuse for you, at this point, you a damn right idiotic. |

ayoola27: Theres no shame in admitting that you are wrong. You are completely and utterly wrong. Does us all a favour and go and study real and proper history. Read my response and make amends. Learn to think, write and speak well of our continent, its the least anyone of us could partake. Stop sourcing from a crazed author that instead of him/her to be writing productive content such as when will the mzungu get thr ish out of our continent. Again, its idiotic to source from a book that is clearly untrue and disengenous. Furthermore, sourcing from such a toxic and ridiculous book, amounts to the condoning of slavery. Are you condoning slavery? I challenge you or any other Eurocentric out there to provide evidence of a slave trade on the continent prior to foreign distruption. |

lawani: Actually, most Empires are multi-ethnic and for strategic reasons, they often use more than one Languages, including Bini Empire. The Bini Palace used both Yoruba and Bini languages at certain times in their history. In England, the Palace and the ruling Aristocratic class spoke French in the 12th century but the commoners spoke English language. This is while many English words that have to do with administration and the elites are of French origin e.g Government, Hospital, Mutton (French)= Lamb (English)? Pork( French) = Pigs (English) |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by lawani: 4:56am On Mar 29 |
oyatz: No. Can you say Itsekiri or Ugbodu people or Akure are mixing Yoruba and Bini?. The language of Ugbodu people is the real language of Benin city in the past. How ever all languages borrow words from adjacent languages. In the case of Britain, if the British empire were built by the monarchy we would be speaking French today instead of English. We are speaking English only because the empire was built by commoners. They still speak French among the English aristocracy |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by RedboneSmith(m): 7:44am On Mar 29 |
lawani: No, they don’t. French hasn’t been the language of the English aristocracy for over 400 years. After the English kings lost their territories in France (Normandy, Aquitaine, etc), they gradually began to de-emphasise their French connections and began to emphasise an English identity; and gradually, between the 1380s and 1600, French disappeared from the court and was replaced by English. Where do you always get your history from? 4 Likes |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by oyatz(m): 4:39pm On Mar 29 |
lawani: You still need some studies in History, Sociology and Linguistics. * No society remain exactly the same for a very long time and as such, their languages change over time. Languages evolve into modern ones or even new languages if they absorb too much foreign words into it. The Language spoken in Ilesha, Akure, Owo , Benin to Itsekiri in 1654 were very similar but these languages evolved over time to their present stages. You will need a special dictionary to understand the English language used by Shakespeare to write his books 500yeaars ago. The English, originally a Germanic language borrowed from Latin, Greek, French etc |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by lawani: 6:21pm On Mar 29 |
RedboneSmith: Starting from William the conqueror if there is any English monarch raised in England that does not speak French, it will be the current one. |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by RedboneSmith(m): 7:46am On Mar 30 |
lawani: Oga, you don’t know history. At all. Charles actually does speaks a little French because he learnt some French in school (like some of us did). His mother Elizabeth spoke even less French than him. No English king has given much of a toss about French since the late 14th century when English replaced it as the language of court business and administration. Latin remained as the second language of administration, but definitely not French. The current British dynasty and the one before it are both of German origin, and the earlier kings of both dynasties spoke better German than English and almost no French at all. George I could only speak German. Since the time of William the Conqueror, many dynasties have ruled in England, and they included Welsh, Scottish and German dynasties, and none of them used French in any official capacity. Read a book, for the love of God 😂 |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by lawani: 7:50am On Mar 30 |
RedboneSmith:George I of Hanover was not raised in England. All monarchs raised in England learned French at home up to Queen Elizabeth. Norman French was the language of English courts and that is why English is very rich in French words today. If the present royal family is not Greek then the line from Hanover was not German. The line is owned by William.the Norman |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by RedboneSmith(m): 8:02am On Mar 30 |
lawani: WAS the language of English courts. WAS. It no longer is. It hasn’t been for over 400 years. Yes, there are many French words in modern English. Every linguist knows this. That is not what I’m discussing with you. Probably up to 30% or so of the English vocabulary is French derived. This is because Old English (Anglo-Saxon) mixed with the Norman French brought in by William and his men to give rise to Middle English, which is the language that Geoffrey Chaucer wrote his Cantebury Tales in. None. Of. This. Means. That. The. Royal. Family. Continues. To. Use. French. Till. This. Day. The House of Hanover and the House of Windsor did not and do not. Any English monarch since 1600 who learnt French learnt it in his own personal capacity and not because it was what the royals spoke or because he needed it to converse at the dinner table. It’s like talking to a brick. **sigh** |
Re: Benin Was A Yoruba speaking Empire. by lawani: 8:14am On Mar 30 |
RedboneSmith: It just happened that they all learned it at home though from.William.the Norman to King Charles except if the person was not raised in England |
