Nigerian Afrofusion newcomer, Stanley Omah Didia professionally known as Omah Lay is the first African artist to be featured on the ‘Africa Rising’ initiative launched by Apple Music.

Africa has become a major force in the global music scene. In recent years, the continent has become a global epicentre of hot and hyped new sounds. From the electric joy of Afrobeats and the rush of South African amapiano to new takes on pop, hip-hop, RnB and more – African music keeps gaining traction.

As a result, music streaming platform Apple Music has launched a new artist discovery program in Africa called Africa Rising. Every two months, Apple Music’s editorial team will select one artist from the continent and amplify their music to its users in 167 countries. The Africa Rising initiative also includes an accompanying playlist featuring songs in different genres from some of the continent’s new and emerging artists.

Nigerian Afrofusion artist, Omah Lay has emerged as the debut featured artist for the program. The Africa Rising current playlist includes music from Nigeria’s Rema, South Africa’s Tellaman and Kenya’s Bensoul among others.

Omah Lay, while reacting to being the first artist from the continent, said to be highlighted by the program, is a dream come true.

“I have always used Apple Music, seeing my favorite artists on playlist covers and features but here I am looking pretty as Apple Music’s first Africa Rising artist. I am overwhelmed, dreams really do come true,” he said in a statement.

The Nigerian artist started making music as a teenager. In 2019, he released two songs that earned him air time on the radio in southern Nigeria state of Rivers. His single, ‘Bad Influence‘ from his debut EP, “Get Layd,” currently tops the Africa Rising playlist. Also, his music is currently featured on the Nigerian Top 100 singles chart on Apple Music.
