The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has surpassed 1 million people, with more than 204,000 in the United States. The number of U.S. cases reported now tops 7 million.
The White House and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) resumed discussions over a possible economic relief bill as Democrats offered a $2.2 trillion package and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin immediately engaged in talks.
The credibility of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is eroding as its response to the pandemic has been marked by technical blunders, botched messaging, and false accusations and interference by Trump administration political appointees.
More than 35,000 airline employees will be out of a job on Thursday, as the industry faces its worst crisis since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
