The House of Representatives has promised to assist the country’s Ministry of Interior to continue to effectively safeguard Nigeria’s internal security. This promise was made yesterday, 17th November 2020, when the House of Representatives Committee on Interior, led by its Deputy Chairman, Rep. Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, visited the Ministry on oversight function, to ascertain the level of implementation of 2019 and 2020 appropriations in preparation for 2021 budget defence.

Speaking during the visit, Rep. Ukpong-udo who represented the Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Nasiru Zangon Daura, said the committee was on a fact-finding and not a fault-finding visit. He reiterated the critical responsibility of the Interior Ministry in the protection and safeguarding of the internal security of the country and acknowledged that such a sensitive responsibility requires enormous resources.
He thereby promised that the Committee is willing to go the extra mile in assisting the Ministry performs its duties and responsibilities effortlessly.

Responding to questions from the Committee, especially on why no recruitment was done into some agencies under the Ministry for 2020, despite funds having been allocated for this purpose, Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Shuaib Belgore, explained that the Ministry had commenced recruitment into Nigerian Immigration Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), but that the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in February was responsible for the delay in the recruitment process.

Mr Belgore disclosed that both agencies received applications from more than a million candidates and those who met the initial requirements had been shortlisted but the aptitude test could not be conducted because of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. He assured candidates who applied that the process would be concluded before the end of the year, disclosing that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been engaged to conduct the written test for selection.

He also disclosed to the Committee that the Ministry achieved 99.75 per cent budget performance in 2019 and 95.69 budget performance in 2020.
