Your friend should get a lawyer

Hello Fellow Nairalanders,

I bring this to your attention for proper guidance and to rub minds...

A friend who has long become like a brother to me called me this morning with sad news. The first time he called me about this issue was in October 2019, when he had some issues paying his rent and his landlord (home is managed by kids of his deceased landlord; normal 9ja house inheritance package, those who know will understand) had given him a notice to pay or quit, he was able to gather as much as he could and I sent what I could, next time i saw him in November, i was under the impression and made to believe that all had been sorted.

Today, he called me to inform me that one of his late landlords kids had come and told him that some people wanted to work on the plumbing and they turned out to be court bailiffs with court papers saying he owed 700k+ on rent, whereas he had made payments totalling over 970k to the family account where rent is supposed to be paid to (figures obtained after reviewing his bank statements). During the commotion caused the eldest of the landlords kids decided to call a family meeting, outcome of which would be decided today.

Apparently a court judgement had been obtained during the period he was paying and he hadn’t been to court for any of the proceedings, he was under the impression that because he had been paying the rent into the account, and the caretaker had been accepting the funds, he had no issues with them.

I would like to seek opinions on what his current options are?
