OPINION: The PDP Before 2015 Is The APC After 2015, A Lesson For The Electorate by Iamagchristian: 9:05pm On Dec 09, 2020
Leadership without vibrant opposition is like birthing a child without giving him the requisite training to differentiate his wrongs and rights. In this situation, the child may think that all he does is always the right thing. Opposition in Nigeria is one that seems vibrant but the unfortunate things happen when power shifts to the side of the opposition.
Nigeria has two major political parties; the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Since 1999 when Nigeria started a non-stop democratic form of leadership, these two parties have been dominating the political space in the country. From 1999 to 2015 PDP was in charge however in 2015 the APC took over power from them and had retained it till now.
Shortly before 2015, the APC were in their top voices criticizing the PDP in areas where they found that the PDP is getting it all wrong. They utilized the media; they protested and did all that they could do to let their voices heard.
During the 2015 general election, they dished good campaign promises while capitalizing on issues the PDP couldn’t address. At the forefront of their campaign propaganda were to tackle corruption, improve security, job creation and lots more. Nigerians having listened to the strength of their change mantra bought their idea and voted massively for them.
Down to 2020 when they had emerged successfully on two different occasions, the same issues with which they used in criticizing the PDP became worst than they met it. Issues bordering on corruption, insecurity and general hardship in the economy became worst than it was in the past. Incessant killings, kidnapping, high prices of essential commodities, excessive borrowings, tax increase, unemployment and more are all witnessed in this period yet what the political class are more interested in is cross carpeting from one party to another and releasing statements whenever people are killed. They are not concerned about the real issues facing the country instead they apportion irrelevant blames to persons whenever an awful situation occurs.
What can the electorate learn from this come 2023 general election?
The truth is that with what is happening in Nigeria today, there is no clear cut demarcation in the leadership style of the APC and that of the PDP. Both have failed Nigerians in delivering good leadership. For this reason, it is expected that the Nigerian voters should watch critically, ask relevant questions, avoid any form of political deceit and vote cautiously.
This is not the time to allow anyone to deceive you with their selfish political agenda. Irrespective of your tribe or where you hail from, this is an opportunity to hold your leaders accountable. Use the power of your PVC and create a long-lasting positive change that you would want your children to enjoy. When these are all done, we shall have a better country to be proud of. God bless Nigeria.
