The goal of many skilled auto mechanics is to open their own auto repair shop at some point in their careers. However, the creation of an efficient, profitable shop will require much more than mechanical skills.
There are a number of repair equipment needs that will be essential for your customers to perform even the most basic repairs quickly and reliably.

Auto repair equipment that you will need to set up an autoservice workshop:

1. Air Compressor

You will need a reliable air compressor to operate a number of tools in your shop, including pneumatic hand tools and some auto lifts. Get the highest capacity you can afford to be sure you have the power you need to power your shop's needs – a good example would be a 60 or 120-gallon compressor.
2. Jack, Jack stands, and Pole Jacks
Many auto repairs will require the vehicle to be lifted at least temporarily, so a strong floor jack will be used on a regular basis. Get a high-quality, high-capacity jack and strong jack stand to support the vehicle once it has been lifted. Pole jacks will also be useful for supporting axles or other components of raised vehicles.

3. Oil drain and oil caddy
Services such as changing oil and transmission fluid will require an oil caddy with enough capacity to contain the largest volume of fluid expected. As your services expand and you work with vehicles on lifts, a standing oil caddy that can reach the raised vehicle will make the job easier and faster.

4. Battery recharger and jumper
Many jobs will relate to dead batteries or problems with charging. Your store will need a good battery charger and jumper to handle these services.

5. Engine hoist
If you do serious engine work that will require the engine to be removed for repair, rebuilds or replacement, the engine hoist is a must. Be sure to purchase one that has the capacity to handle the largest engine you expect to service.

6. Brake lathe
When you're doing brake jobs, you can take rotors or drums to another resurfacing service, but that's expensive and you're making significant profits. Buying your own brake lathe will make the brake service more efficient and profitable, paying for itself quickly. Be sure to purchase a brand name lathe to ensure that spare parts are available when needed.

7. Strut compressor
A good strut compressor is extremely useful when replacing struts or working on suspension systems. Having this item adds to your service capabilities and helps make your auto repair business profitable.
