Applying to study in the UK either for an undergraduate or post graduate degree is not as difficult as it seems, you only need to be well prepared and have the right paperwork and documents required.
We have compiled a list of the Five (5) important documents that you’ll need to have and submit if you are thinking of studying abroad. Check out the list below:

Academic Transcript
While applying to a University in the UK, you will be required to submit an academic transcript that focuses on your academic experience and accomplishments. Academic transcripts give the University full details about the subjects or courses you’ve studied and the grades you received. Universities expect these transcripts to be official copies and not screenshots or printed pages. Academic transcripts are important because seeing what subjects you took can help universities decide if you have the necessary background and skills for the degree you are applying to.

Certificate of Graduation
You will be asked to submit certified copies of your high school graduation diploma. Universities need these documents to have proof that you attended and graduated from a previous level of education in order to qualify for a new programme. These certificates of graduation usually include data about the educational institution you attended, your grade Point average (GPA) and final grades.

Certificate of English Proficiency
Although Nigeria is an English-speaking country, most Universities in the UK don’t consider it an English-speaking country and still require prospective students to submit a certificate to show excellent English Language proficiency. Universities in the UK usually accept students who can communicate, understand and consequently succeed in their education. There are various English standardized tests admitted at UK universities such as IELTS, TOEFL or UCLES.

Personal statement.
A personal statement is required when applying to Universities in the UK. In it, prospective students are to write about what they hope to do on the course, what they hope to do after the course and why they are applying. Your personal statement holds great value as the Universities gauge your suitability for the program on its basis. Typically, the personal statement should be clearly structured and well-written, limited to 1-2 pages.

Reference/Recommendation Letters
There are two types of reference/recommendation letters, academic and professional. Academic References are from your Head of School or a teacher who can attest to your academic qualification while professional references are from your employers. The academic reference letter should talk about you from a teacher's or supervisor's perspective: the way in which you interact with other students and your performance in classes and seminars.

I hope this list has been helpful and you now know the most important documents that would be required while applying to Universities in the UK.

Can Proof of Proficiency in English Language Replace IELTS?
There are questions emigration hopefuls ask about their documents and the kind of visa they are looking to get—especially the academic admission seekers; questions ranging from: how, if possible, to extend the lifespan of their IELTS to make it be useful still after the normal two years it’s usually valid for? Is WES evaluation necessary for all admissions seekers in the Americas? Short answers to these questions are: yes, there are ways the lifespan of your IELTS can be extended to remain useful after two years; and no, WES evaluation is not a compulsion, only few schools in the Americas ask for WES evaluation. On another publication on this web, I will be writing comprehensively on the extension of the lifespan of IELTS, and on when you need or do not need WES evaluation. But on this one, I only intend to make some clarifications on the need for Proof of Proficiency in English Language (POPEL) and the need for IELTS, as well as when you need either of the two as a foreign admission seeker.
