U.s President, Obama, Honours Nigerian Naval Officer by Nobody: 4:43am On May 01, 2011 |
United States President, Barack Obama, on Thursday bestowed Meritorious Service Medal Award on a serving Commodore in the Nigerian Navy, Adeniyi Osinowo, over his exemplary service in his seven months stay in office as Deputy Commander, Africa Partnership Station (APS) West. Represented by the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Terence McCulley, the U.S President described Osinowo as a man who was committed to the task assigned to him, and therefore worthy of being honoured. The event was hosted at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Navy in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the US President, McCulley noted that the co-operation that exists between the U.S and Nigerian Navy is beneficial to both parties, saying that other nations should learn from it. He also applauded Nigeria for its yeoman’s job in the task of providing security in the Gulf of Guinea, a task he described as challenging. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ola Ibrahim, in his comments, commended the U.S government for the honour done to the Nigerian Navy through the recognition of efforts put into the tasking job given to Oshinowo, which he did very well. He noted that the award presented to Oshinowo is actually a celebration of the excellence that exists in Nigerian Navy as well as the partnership between Nigerian and the US Navy. He noted that Oshinowo is just an example of the numerous intellectuals within the Nigerian Navy, saying that if more platforms are provided for officers of the Nigerian Navy to handle important positions, they will perform excellently well. During the course of his stay as the Deputy Commander of APS, Oshinowo was said to have demonstrated exceptional leadership as he “adeptly led a staff of 50 members from 17 countries”. He was further described as “an expert in West African maritime safety and security, who was the lead proponent and credible spokesperson for the APS mission, influencing key leaders, naval and civilian maritime personnel from 14 African countries. http://www.independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=32934 |

Good news. Kudos to Commodore Osinowo. It's nice to hear something positive about someone in the Nigerian military for a change. |
