The EXPLOSION in Tel Aviv: 1. ISRAEL still does not officially confirm that the Houthis are the ones behind the launch of the UAV to Tel Aviv, but the Air Force will still have to investigate the route it took, and how it managed to evade the detection systems and radars. The distance between Tel Aviv and the port of Hodeidah in Yemen (one of the main centers of power of the Houthis) is 2,100 km. This is a failure of the detection systems, and it is extremely significant because if the suspected target is not detected, it is also not possible to try to intercept it. That is why the IDF announced both an "in-depth investigation" and the reinforcement of aircraft patrols in the country's skies. 2. Out of all the arenas that have been operating against the State of Israel since 7/10 - the Houthis are the only party that the State of Israel has not acted against directly so far. As Israeli officials have said in the past, Yemen is the only arena in which ISRAEL has not attacked - and this out of a preference to allow the international coalition, led by the US and Great Britain, to operate in Yemen, while ISRAEL is busy and focusing its attention and efforts on the closer arenas - Gaza and Lebanon. Only in the last day - the American Central Command announced the destruction of two surface-to-air missiles and four drones of the Houthis. This is a continuous American operation that lasts for many months, even if some in Israel believe that it is too limited. 3. So far, since the beginning of the war, this is the first successful attack by the Houthis against ISRAELI territory (they had several other successful attacks in the maritime space, but not against Israeli targets). They launched dozens of UAVs and missiles into Israel - but none of them hit a target in our territory. The vast majority were successfully intercepted in the Red Sea and Eilat area by the air defense systems even before the targets penetrated Israeli territory, and there were also some that fell in open areas without damage or casualties (such as the cruise missile that exploded north of Eilat many months ago). This situation was convenient from Israel's point of view - as long as the Houthis were not able to produce a single successful attack or inflict casualties on the Israeli side. But now, when such an attack succeeded in penetrating Tel Aviv and killing an Israeli citizen - the question of direct Israeli action against the Houthis, who are located about 2,000 km south of Israel - a greater distance than the distance between Tehran and Tel Aviv - will come up again. ISRAEL Initial investigation by the Air Force: The UAV that exploded in Tel Aviv was indeed detected by the aerial detection systems - but it was decided not to intercept it, because it was not classified as a hostile target According to the initial investigation, the systems did detect the vehicle, and also saw a part of its flight path - but it was not classified as a hostile aircraft penetration event and as an air threat in the air defense system. Since the target was not classified as an enemy target, no warning was activated and the target was not shot down. In other words, this is not a malfunction of the systems - but rather a human error whose causes are still unclear and are still under investigation. The Air Force acknowledges that this is a serious malfunction, takes responsibility for the incident, clarifies that it was necessary to shoot down the UAV and updates that at this stage - there are no additional UAVs on their way to Israel. The Air Force still cannot definitively confirm that the UAV was launched from Yemen, but it can be said that it was a long-range UAV, which flew at a low altitude and made its way for very long hours to Israeli territory, arrived from the direction of the sea and exploded on the apartment in Tel Aviv. At the same time, tonight there was another incident in which a UAV that made its way to Israeli territory from the east (probably from Iraq) was shot down, even before it had time to penetrate Israeli territory. Chief of Staff Halevy convened an initial situation assessment with senior IDF officials about two hours ago, and at the end of the day ordered a comprehensive technological intelligence investigation - along with collecting findings from the scene, in order to understand what the device was that exploded, what flight paths it took and who was responsible for the action. At 9:00 the Chief of Staff will conduct another assessment of the situation. |
