I can’t really tell how old is my surname neither can i tell how many generations.

Both my father and grand father had no idea of the origin of the surname. Funny enough i have seen people who originated from other states using the same surname. From my speculation that name might be more than 500 years or maybe not.

Why should a surname you have no idea of it origin continue? And you have to continue to pass it down? Does it make any sense?

Grandfather'' but my children will not use that name. But in my mother s side that name don reach 300 to 400 years

It's my Grandfather's given name, I will give my children my father's

Great grandfather I think…we didn’t change is because the name is influential and we are the only family bearing the name in my town/community.

I was answering my father's name while growing up, in my secondary school my father changed my surname to our ancestral name and added his own name as middle name. As an adult, I used both names!

However, my child is answering my own name as her surname... likewise my wife... I am of the school of thought that children bear the names of their fathers as surname.
