When a warning is issued, take immediate action. Don’t dilly-dally. If you’re in a flood-prone area, move immediately to high ground.

A flash flood can develop in minutes; sometimes it happens so fast there isn’t time for a warning.

The more you do to look at your situation ahead of time, the better.

Prepare for and stay safe during a flash flood.

Homeowners should look up their neighborhood on official sub-plain maps to judge the flood risks.

You can see two-foot elevation contours and get an idea where your house is in relation to the surrounding land.

This is helpful to see where you are relative to a flood plain. It’s helpful to see what’s your elevation compared to the surrounding area.

Knowing your elevation can help you plot the best evacuation route.

Children and even every family should have their name and address written on their arms with permanent marker, for identification if the worst happens and are swept away.

When you see water on a roadway, you don’t know when that road has been washed out underneath.

Often, streams have blown out smaller culverts or bridges that weren’t built for that kind of flooding. You’ve got a very serious situation there. It only takes six inches of fast-moving water to knock over most adults, and 12 inches of fast-moving water to carry away smaller vehicles

600 people lost their lives in floods last yer , but knowing how Nigeria always massively under -reports casualties, it won't surprise me if the real number of fatalities is about 20,000.

Don't be a casualty.

Evacuate now!
Do not wait until you see the flood arrive by time you see it would probably be too late escape to safety. Evacuate now ! Do not take chances with your life and that of your family.

First yoy might see the flood may be it waking you from your sleep and you might find your toddler or infant has been carried away by the water . This has been some people's experience.

Kuku pack the essentials into a vehicle and start heading to high ground.

Those in flood zones of Anambra can head to Ekwulobia or Enugu

It is better evacuate now learn that the flood was did not warrant evacuation, than to stay put in a flood prone zone and end up losing your life and that o your family.

Evacuate until you are certain that we have entered dry season , hence until Early to mid November.

So all the earlier warnings was ignored until the disaster happened.

Gosh
This is a dumb question.

Does the government made anything available for people to easily move to higher ground.

They just dropped the word and retreated into their offices and homes.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has raised the alarm of expectations of high rainfall and heavy flooding for 10 local governments area of Anambra State this year.

According to SEMA, the high flood risk areas in Anambra State that could be flood hit include
Ogbaru,
Ayamelum,
Anambra East,
Anambra West,
Onitsha North,
Onitsha South,
Awka North,
Idemili South,
Ekwusigo
and Ihiala LGAs.

The statement signed by Mr. Paul Nwosu, the State’s Commissioner for Information stated that the 2023 seasonal rainfall prediction and annual flood outlook by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) has shown that there will be high rainfall and heavy flooding across the country this year.

SEMA in its flood mitigation measures said that making concrete plans for timely harvesting and evacuation of farm produce and livestock to avoid losses is advisable.

The statements maintained that one should not wait until the flood comes before harvesting.

The statement continued, “Make concrete plans to secure your household properties and essential belongings as much as possible before the flood actually sets in.

Plan ahead to get your family as well as the aged, the sick, pregnant women, infants and children evacuated well on time to safety nets ( IDP CAMPS provided by the ANSG Government ) to avoid preventable loss of lives. Timely evacuation is key.

“De-silting of water channels should be done continuously as huge amount of silt is deposited in water channels after rainfall. People should stop constructing in water plains and across water channels.

Clear gutters and drainages, do not dispose your thrash in gutters or drainage.

Move to a higher ground before the flood becomes neck deep. If cut off from designated point, climb and stay on a tree or high platform.

“Keep a family disaster kit. A disaster kit is an assemblage of basic essentials (food, water, medications, touch lights, blankets, etc.) that will last a family a few days in event of flood.

It is dangerous to wade or swim in flood waters due to submerged logs, stones and the presence of dangerous reptiles.

Children should not attempt to recover any of their toys or belongings which perchance have fallen into the flood for it can drown them in the process.

“Do not drive in the flood because you can float and be carried away. Step out immediately and search for a higher ground. Never play in flood. Do not drink or eat any food contaminated by flood water.

Before the onset of flood, deploy sand bags around buildings for flood defence. Avoid wet electrical equipment during flooding.

Put off all electrical appliances to avoid electrocution,”he concluded.

Re: Nigeria Flood Watch by worksmart(m): 3:29pm On Oct 05, 2023
Evacuate your family from flood-prone areas immediately !!

Never wait to see the flood before evacuating , if you see flood it may be to late as the flood water may have already closed off your escape route before it reaches you.

If you no care for your life and that of your family continue to wait for the flood to appear or an official government flood warning.

Just remember to right the name & address on skin of all family member with permanent marker so that anybody carried by the flood can be identified especially toddlers and infants.

Niger Delta elevation / contour map

Re: Nigeria Flood Watch by worksmart(m): 1:05pm On Oct 06, 2023
If you are in a flood prone area evacuate immediately to higher ground the sooner the better so that you have time to find alternative accomadation in the higher ground and get settled for at least a month until we comfortable in the dry season .

The dangers of leaving until last minute to evacuate is that you would be cught up in holdups , bottlenecks and your escape route may hve been shut off by the flood.

Transportation costs would be through the roof

Also find last minut accommodation would be very difficult and any available would multiple times their usual price.

Meaning you may have to camp out in open spaces and open to the mercy o the weather.

You may be forced to go into an IDP camp if any is available, and there may force you to take vacinations.

So evacuate now early before the floods arrive.
