There was a time in lagos, between the late 80’s and early 90’s when Barr Segun Awolowo jnr, scion of the Awolowo dynasty was part of the boys that made the city thick. He and his rich friends ruled. They were at every major party and fans of the Juju Maestro, Sir Shina Peters. They made Shina Peters a household name.
You have no choice but to shine when your grand father is the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and your mother is the legendary fashion design, Abah Adesanya, of the House of Labanella, who later became Mrs Abah Wahab Folawiyo.
His wedding in the 80s was one of the weddings of the decade with class and panache.

Age has come, and with it as they say, responsibility.

On September 26th 2023, Segun turned 60 and he marked it quietly with a few friends. They had Thanksgiving in a church in ikoyi and a private luncheon attended by a select few. His mother was also present. Times have indeed changed.
The old segun would have had KSA churning out his ever green tunes or Baba Miliki, Commander Ebenezer Obey entertaining. And his mums society friends and families would all have been gorgeously represented.

He is a super bureaucrat. From 2013 to 2021Segun was the helmsman at the NEPC, Nigerian export promotions council. He has turned the place around. Made the issuance of export licences or renewals a walk in the park. Ask exporters what their eyes saw before now. He is just been working quietly. No noise, no hype. Pure class.
In Febuary 2023, President Bahari appointed him Secretary of the FG Action Committee of AFCTANG

Segun has also made export attractive to young people by collaborating and organising seminars all over Nigeria where people’s eyes are opened into the potentials of the world of export. There still is a lot to be done, but he has done great. People now take great pride in exporting packaged palm oil, ginger, egusi, dry pepper, vegetables, fashion wares and leather to all over the world. His work at NEPC made people see the viability of selling on Amazon, eBay and other international platforms.

These days, Segun still rocks, it’s in his body, but the level is different. He now belongs to an exclusive set of the super rich, who fly by private jet to attend a party in Benin city on Saturday, spend a few hours, and hop into their waiting jets to attend another party in Abuja or Abeokuta. Leave matter, life na level jor. Not everything is noise.

Below is an introduction of The African Continental Free Trade Area( ACFTA). Segun Awolowo is secretary of the Nigerian section of this giant body who’s goal is to promote trade and export among African nations. This is still in line with what he was doing as Chief Executive of NEPC.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is one of the Flagship Projects of Agenda 2063 Africa’s development framework. The AfCFTA was approved by the 18th ordinary Session of Assembly of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in January 2012 which adopted the decision to establish an African Continental Free Trade Area and the Action Plan for Boosting intra-African trade as a key initiatives whose implementation would promote socio-economic growth development . The AfCFTA aims at accelerating intra-African trade and boosting Africa’s trading position in the global market by strengthening Africa’s common voice and policy space in global trade negotiations. Enough.

Today also marks his 30th wedding anniversary. His family has been kept out of the public space. He enjoyed more than a fair share to cover all of them. We wish he and his beautiful and lovely wife, more bliss and fun.
