Bertolt Brecht wrote: “ The worst illiterate is the political illiterate, he doesn't hear, doesn't speak, nor participates in the political events. He doesn't know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the Medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics. The slowpoke doesn't know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, the corrupted and the flunky of the national and multinational companies."
It is not uncommon to hear Nigerians say: “politics is a dirty game, only the ungodly and the corrupt involve in it." These words, which are fast becoming a maxim in Nigeria, has deterred a lot of well meaning Nigerians from participating in politics. Yet, the game of politics is so crucial that it affects every sphere of our lives. It affects our children's education; it determines the state of our roads; if done right, it can improve our power supply. If done badly, can cause poverty and insecurity. Politics also affects our religion; a political leadership can outlaw a religion or a religious group. No wonder it is dirty; the toughest and the most important games in life are dirty! Every football fan looks forward to the El clasicos in the Spanish league; first, the games are usually determinants of the league's eventual winners, second, the rivalry re-ignited between Spain's most successful clubs. Such meetings rarely disappoint fans, there's always much to talk about after the games; the rough tackles, the bloody duels, tireless and motivated players, and chanting and expletives from aroused fans who wouldn't settle for less than a win! If a football game can be that ‘dirty', how much more the game that affect every sphere of your life?
“... Only the ungodly or the corrupt involves in it" because the pious and the honest have abandoned it ignorantly. Ignorance in political matters of many Nigerians has aided our heartless politicians. Most Nigerians don't know their rights as citizens; when they raise money for the purchase of a new transformer, they continue to query the landlord chairman until the good is seen, but they don't do the same to their representative because he is not spending their money! So there's no oversight on spending by politicians. Zero accountability! The situation is worsened by the so much money about political offices which like rotten fruits to flies attracts mostly opportunists and political scavengers. The current political leaders are corrupt and ungodly people, but it is up to the honest and selfless Nigerians to make it right. They can and they must! Otherwise, nothing will ever change. They have to overcome their fears and weaknesses and face the elitist ‘animals in human skins'. Every nation has wicked, corrupt humans; there's no place without a word for wicked; but the sensible, good people in Germany, Japan and England make sure such persons are in institutions like prison, not in leadership positions. It is therefore imperative that honest and godly Nigerians MUST involve in politics for a turn around to occur in our nation's story.

I agree with this article in its entirety. But its just unfortunate that we rely so much on politicians.
