In a recent radio interview with Bridge FM Asaba, Olorogun Godwin Obire, the special adviser on legislative and political matter to the senator representing delta north senatorial district at the 10th National Assembly Senate, shed light on the emergence of Senator Prince Ned Nwoko as the Committee chairman on Reparations and Repatriation. Obire emphasized that Senator Ned is the perfect fit for the role and went on to discuss the functions of the new committee.

According to Obire, the committee will play a crucial role in addressing historical injustices, promoting societal healing, and ensuring accountability. He further highlighted that this newly formed committee is the first of its kind and will be responsible for Policy Development, outlining eligibility criteria, types of reparations, and mechanisms for addressing historical grievances.

Obire also revealed that the committee, under the leadership of Senator Ned Nwoko, will be significantly involved in legislative review. Their main task will be to review existing legislation, propose new laws, and suggest amendments to support reparations programs and repatriation efforts. This ensures that the committee's actions align with international standards and best practices in addressing historical grievances.

Furthermore, Obire stated that the committee will oversee the implementation of reparations and repatriation programs, carefully monitoring their effectiveness and ensuring that they are carried out in a fair and transparent manner. The committee may conduct hearings, investigations, and evaluations to assess progress and identify areas for improvement.

To ensure inclusivity and participation, Obire mentioned that the committee will engage with victims, communities, experts, and advocacy groups to gather input on reparations and repatriation initiatives. Public consultations will be conducted to guarantee the process is comprehensive and representative of various perspectives.

Allocation of funds for reparations and repatriation programs will also be one of the committee's responsibilities. They will work closely with the finance committee to secure the necessary budgetary provisions. The committee will also conduct research on historical injustices, analyze data, reports, and case studies to inform their decision-making and policy recommendations.

Collaboration with international organizations, foreign governments, and experts in the field of reparations and repatriation is another agenda item for the committee. This will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as foster global cooperation in addressing historical grievances.

Additionally, the committee will focus on raising awareness among the general public about the significance of reparations and repatriation in addressing historical injustices and promoting reconciliation. Educational campaigns, events, and initiatives will be organized to inform the public about the committee's work.

Advocacy for the rights of victims of historical injustices will also be a priority for the committee. They will push for legal reforms, policy changes, and institutional reforms to support reparations and repatriation efforts. Lobbying other lawmakers to gain support for their initiatives will be part of their strategy.

To keep the public and the National Assembly Senate informed, the committee will prepare reports on their findings, recommendations, and progress in implementing reparations and repatriation programs. These reports will be submitted to the National Assembly Senate for review and consideration.

Obire stressed the critical role that the National Assembly Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation will play in advancing justice, reconciliation, and healing for individuals and communities affected by historical injustices. Their functions and duties are aimed at addressing the legacies of the past, promoting accountability, and building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
