Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU)Intensifies Efforts to Combat Food Insecurity with New Plantain and Banana Suckers Distribution Initiative.

Continuing its commitment to Continuing its commitment to eradicating food insecurity in Nigeria, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University has launched a new Community Development Initiative (CDI) focused on distributing plantain and banana suckers to members of its host community and its environs. This latest effort builds on the university's successful cassava stem project launched in April 2024, further solidifying its role as a proactive force in the fight against hunger.

Earlier this year, the university distributed high-quality cassava stems to members of the Agbarha-Otor community, as well as to students and staff of the institution. This initiative was designed to promote sustainable agricultural practices, improve food production, and empower individuals to contribute to their food security. The success of the cassava project has paved the way for this new phase, where plantain and banana suckers will now be distributed, expanding the scope and impact of the university's food security initiatives.

Dr. Cecilia Ibru, OFR, the visionary behind these transformative projects, expressed her commitment to addressing food insecurity: "At Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, we believe in the power of education and community engagement to drive positive change. By providing these resources, we aim to equip our community with the tools they need to produce their food, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience."

The plantain and banana sucker distribution project is not just an agricultural endeavour but a holistic approach to community development. By involving students, staff, and community members, the university fosters a sense of ownership and collective responsibility in tackling food insecurity.
This initiative aligns with the university's broader mission to empower individuals through education, innovation, and practical support.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyinka Fuwape, highlighted the importance of these initiatives in the university's strategic plan:
"Our goal is to be a beacon of hope and a model of excellence in addressing critical societal challenges. Through projects like these, we demonstrate our commitment to creating a food-secure future for our community and beyond."

The distribution of plantain and banana suckers will commence on July 29, 2024, with several thousand suckers available to beneficiaries. The university has also planned a series of workshops and training sessions to educate recipients on best practices for planting, cultivating, and maintaining their crops, ensuring the highest possible yield and long-term success.

Michael and Cecilia Ibru University remains dedicated to its mission of making a significant impact on food security in Nigeria. By leveraging its resources, expertise, and community spirit, the university continues to lead by example, inspiring others to join the fight against hunger.
